Thanks Don, I hope we see you too! I'm gonna be getting back out here in Arizona next weekend with my boy and my buddy Lawrence for the first time since, and I'm looking forward to it!
@@MattKester Safe travels! I always enjoy the Disco updates. Just installed some new skids on my 4runner and I am looking forward to testing them out on some trails.
Love the term "automotive backpacking". I always say I like vehicle based dispersed camping but refuse to call it over landing for fear it will suddenly cost too much. Hang in there Matt.
Sorry to hear about the divorce. You'll be better off in the end though. Pro tip on being single over 30. Grow out the beard, and leave the grey as it is.
It’s all for the best. Still weighing the options on growing it back out. The feedback without it. Had been about 80/20 positive for the clean look. Maybe I should start a poll?
Just found your channel because of the Disco content. Sorry to see it go but you’re absolutely right about the overlanding stuff. It isn’t sustainable with prices the way they are, and in all honesty a Subaru can get me to pretty much any where I’ve been that my land rovers that are packed to gills with gear took me. I’m southeast of Tucson maybe our paths will cross. I’ve been where you’re at I know what your going through. Keep on doing what you love and finding new things to do.
Let's just say it's complicated. It was something neither of us really saw coming and we've been working hard to get through it as amicably as possible.
I´ve just came across your channel, I first saw the video when you bought the Disco -well, the wife -, and then I saw this. Sorry you separated. The disco still looks good. As a +20 years vehicle, repairs will need to be done, and will still need. But it´s a vehicle to withstand hard roads, no doubt about it. It´s almost a Range Rover Classic, since the Disco I was built over the RR chassis and drivetrain. Old school 4x4s are the best, IMO. Take care!
I tell you what, my decision to keep her verses the 4Runner pretty much came down to the fact that I know I can maintain her with minimal tools and with a lot more ease. Sure, she'll need more work, but at least it's work you can do in the driveway!
Similar goes with my Toyota Land Cruiser. If you use anything, and I mean ANYTHING other than Aisan, Denso or Toyota parts, you're doing the job twice. Learned this with my fan pully bracket.
@@MattKester it does great it has tons of spots to steak it. You also can still access the inside of your car doors, the awning room also has a floor, It has huge windows with mesh and zippers to close them up for poor weather like heavy winds and rain and with a buddy heater stays nice a toasty I have a normal sized cot and my XL cot with plenty of space in between spots to hang lanterns on the inside and outside I would honestly recommend it the awning room itself is as compact as a large sleeping bag, plus you also have the awning itself.
My buddy Henry and I have both recently purchased the ARB awnings with annex rooms and we are sold on them. We still both have our tents, but this has been a nice alternative method of camping. Henry has the 8' model and I use the 6' model.
Love the wildpeaks have had them one for over a year and they are great in the snow. And your right why do you need all the fancy stuff. I have basic, would like a fridge freezer but other than that i am good. Only replaced front bumper do to it broken, my back one needs to be replaced that broke it this past winter lol. Oh and I have a D2. Enjoy.
Where you are planning on taking the channel sounds great.👍 I like the idea of roof top tents, but when I see the price tag it's a big nope. I'll just stick with my old school 4 person tent that fits easily into the old xj. For me it's always been about what do I really need and how easily it packs and fits in the jeep.
Thanks! Yeah, I've still got my Marmot 4 person that's been going strong for over 10 years. Also just got a new quick pitch 4 person I picked up on a Pro Deal for stupid cheap I'll be evaluating this weekend! Stay tuned!
Respect to you, I love your vision and the simplicity of your idea about overlanding. I just sold a 07 Jeep wrangler packed with winch, snorkel, big tires and a lot of s*** I never used. Looking for a simpler but strong and adapted to my needs overlanding vehicle. Greetings from Costa Rica
Thanks Uncle Doug. I'm actually back now and gonna be taking my first trip locally since the weekend before we lost Cece this weekend with my son and my buddy Lawrence.
Hi Matt, I've seen your videos on youtube and congratulations on it. I'm Pablo, I live in Santiago de Chile, I have an LR Discovery 1Vogue V8 automatic I've traveled all of southern Chile Patagonia to Tierra del Fuego, a trip of 5300 miles. just a tire without air. Going up to the Andes mountains warmed up. I waited for the temperature to drop, I checked the water level and it was normal. continue trip. back about 320 miles. and when checking the level I had to fill with 1.5 liters of antifreeze. From there if I drive two hours consumes 1 liter of antifreeze. I checked the radiator, hoses I did a bypass in the heating to rule out the heating radiator. No leaks under the Discovery. There are also no bubbles in the coolant reservoir. The exhaust pipe drops of water. The engine sounds and works well, the normal spark plugs. The mechanic thinks it's not the head gasket. Matt, can you please help me? sorry for my bad english. Thank you.
Man, Love you approach to overlanding. It's same as mine. I started watching your videos before starting to resurrect a 95 disco 300 tdi and in the middle came other videos from brittanica and trailfitter. Suddenly, when I finished the restoration this video came up to me. As everyone around I'm sorry for your last events. Keep rowing, you'll be fine. By the way, in Spain to fill up my beast it's 150€ of diesel. Everywhere else in Europe is much more! Feel grateful. LOL. Hugs.
Fed. Life carries on and keep calm ! Could we all see a list of future D1 inexpensive upgrades to maintain her and giving it a past owners name for she who shall be obeyed sir ? V.
Sorry about you’re unforeseen life changes, that must be hard. Thanks for recognizing the impacts of our use of these vehicles, too. I mostly use my D1 for trips to our river lot or errands where drayage is required. I justify it, or at least mitigate those impacts, by doing equal amounts of errands with a Honda CT125. That raises my average MPG to about 75.
Looking fwd to seeing where you take the channel. Love the idea of “minimalist overlanding”. It’s been hard finding ideas on that online. Everything seems to be an over built rig. Keep up the awesome work.
Thanks Eli! Well, it'll definitely be minimalist from here on out. I've got other things to do with my money and why buy expensive single purpose gear, when most of my backpacking stuff does the job just fine? That being said, there are some creature comforts I do enjoy and I'll definitely still explore some of those in upcoming videos.
@@elim9780 Yeah, and since I need to carry a big battery to keep my filming electrics charged, it’s doesn’t take up and more space than if i just brought the cooler!
Matt I am sorry to hear about the changes in your personal life. I am sure it is tough. That said support for you and your channel from I will continue. I look forward to more of your "shows". I hope only the best for you and your ex. Take care and build up yourself.
As long as you keep the fluids in check these old discos can run forever, my 4cyl mpi has 200k miles on it, (the last 20k done with a blown head gasket but i'm waiting for some parts to become available again before any repairs take place) and it's still going as strong as it can as it's a bit on the weaker side
“Automotive backpacking” is how my wife and I view our excursions. We have backpacked for years so when we started adventuring in a vehicle, we took what we knew and went with it. Looking forward to future episodes!
You know, that’s a great question. There’s a lot to unpack there, but yeah, I would buy another one, provided to had the means to feed it and maintain it. Honestly, the 25 year rule is coming up on TD5 powered D2’s, and that’s really tempting. I also have a curiosity for LR3/4’s, but that might have to wait until I strike it rich somewhere else. The Disco was definitely an amazing experience for me, and it will be in my memory as one of the favorites of my lifetime, I just don’t know if I’ll ever be able to have another D1, but that stems more from the negative emotions behind the other relationship that was unraveling in my life at the same time I iowned it.
@@jimmybradley6654 Yeah, the Toyota tax is real, that's for sure but they are damn good machines. To compare the two, the Disco was hands down the better off-roader and much more comfortable for long drives on the highway, but it was a lot more expensive in fuel cost and time spent wrenching. Although, I'd rather work on it than the Toyota any day. The 4Runner is capable enough for most anything people would want to do, gets better fuel mileage, and has a higher perceived value, but parts are more and working on it is a pain in the ass. That's really the best way I can compare the two. Oh, and the Disco feels like it actually has a soul.
@@andyackerman7123 Definitely, that'll add up for sure! I used to carry a big cooler on the catwalk of the daycab I drove heavy haul over the road in for just that reason. Had a nice sandwich bar back there!
I keep telling people that the Disco 2 is, in my opinion, the apex of LR design - Solid axles, simple mechanical systems and a level of comfort that is still perfectly acceptable today. Thing is, I feel that way about the D2 because it's got the TD5 engine which - I hate to break the news to 300tdi worshippers - is a much better engine than the D1 had. In the USA, where all(?) Disco's had V8s, The D1 IS probably a better choice because everything just got more complicated on the D2 without there being any real benefit in return.
Thanks Si! I really need to investigate those import loopholes here a little better to see if we can't get a TD5 D2 sooner. If you go by the 25 year rule (which mostly pertains to crash safety) it means we can bring a 99 in in 2024, but there's also the 15 year rule for emissions compliance, and since the D2 was sold here and approved, I wonder if you could argue the case that a TD5 ought qualify under the 15 year rule and not the 25? Stupid politics!
Love the videos. I think you will come out the other side of those life events a freer man. Selfishly hoping this means more time for discovery videos!! I also feel like you should start monotizing your videos. Ham radios can't pay the billz on their own.
Thank man! Sorry you haven't had the time to get the pathfinder out and go as much. I'm thinking we need to put together group run here in the near future. Maybe even make it an overnighter this time!
I feel that people either want their vehicle to look like an overlanding rig and not go anywhere or have a minimalist approach and take their vehicle out on an adventure. I have to be realistic with my truck because it’s a daily driver as well. Driving around with 2000 lbs of armor and big mud terrain tires would kill my already poor gas mileage. I share your view that I would rather get to my destination and enjoy it rather than waste money on upgrades and equipment I really don’t need. Good Luck and enjoy the new adventures.
Like the new haircut and no beard look. Good luck in your "single parent" life. Looking forward to your more "minimalist approach" to Overlanding. Can't wait to see your next adventure!
Another great video Matt. Sorry to hear your news; life sometimes throws some spanner’s at you, I had a tear in my eye with CeCe news. Whatever video you choose moving forwards I will watch and enjoy, keep smiling matey .
What temps are you running after the water pump replacement? This 96 Disco would love to know. For reference, I did some highway driving in 100deg Houston weather yesterday and I was hitting 212 doing 70.
When she's in motion, she holds pretty strong to the 180-190 range. It's the slow crawl in lines or idling that will bring the temps up to the 210-212 range before I lose my nerve and kick up the revs. If you're hitting 212 somewhere flat like Houston doing 70, I'd definitely start taking a look at the cooling system.
