Monsteras have wholes firstly because rains and winds can be strong in tropics. Especially when it's rainy season. It's like spider's web mechanism, the wind blows and rain falls right through it. Here in mexico the rain season is coming soon, and wild monsteras climb high, creating huge leaves, like umbrellas. Without wholes they will all break easily ❤️🦋

Interesting, I haven't heard any of the three theories you mentioned about why the monstera leaves are fenestrated. I heard other people on RU-vid always mention its so the wind/air can pass through the leaves so they don't break as they mature in the wild. Good to know, thanks

I can triple your plant space with a semi automated permaculture in a modernized plant temple. Well you can if you apply this science 1. Moving light as in the Low Line New York 2. Zone your home in permaculture principles also using vertical spaces. Look up Geoff Lawton and then fuse that approach to the modern building Agora Tower of Taipei Taiwan I have video links if you like

Jimmy, Rhaphidophora. Meaning: From the Greek rhaphis (needle) and phoros (carrying), referring to the needle-like points on the fruit. Based on this etymology I would say Raphido-phora. To each his own I guess. Love that variegated adansonii. Also, If you cut that Strawberry Shake back to where It looked like Strawberry Shake it may sprout better looking foliage, no? Cheers, Chris

How do you get rid of spider mites they have webs right?? Room is beautiful
@jimmygimbal
@jimmygimbal 2 года назад
You really gotta stop them early but it's better to be preventive. They love dry and warm air.. get your plants humid and don't let your plant send stress signals, meaning feed them well and dont stress them out. Prevent the mites from breeding and wash away the current ones you see. Quarantine the heavily infested ones or just throw them out if it's too far from saving.

LOL So I am not the only one that has a green onion growing in my plant room. I brought it in last fall to see if it would do its thing in winter inside but sadly not too well. left the big mother plant of it outside so nothing lost. Going to get cold over here in this next week and then hopefully I can set her back out to live a happier life. My Fernwood Sanseveria is finally putting out a pup. I LOVE that plant. Mine is very tall. A grocery store find in the gift plant section. I used to live in Sacto 36 years ago and had a manzanita christmas tree one year. Wish I could get it here in Idaho cause I an NOT going back to CA. I really enjoyed your tour. Your space is Gorgeous. That sky light is amazing. I was considering doing a house plant tour too. So many of the 'reasons' for the fenestrations seen in Monstera are misguided. The slit-and-hole fenestrations of Monstera deliciosa is just another way to evolve the compound leaf. Why do some plants have compound leaves? Many reasons! Often the combination of temperature, light, and humidity will dictate an ideal leaf for a species. Some plants do better with large compound leaves of very small leaflets (pinnate palms, philodendron tortum) yet others will have huge simple (single) leaves (P. melanochrysum). Monstera do not fenestrate when small, as there is no need--it is preferable to just capture more sunlight and the leaves are much smaller than their ideal size. As the plant matures though, the need for more sunlight necessitates larger leaves. To maintain the ideal size and still capture more sunlight though, large fenestrations make these leaves function more like a compound leaf of several smaller leaflets. Evolution is outcome-driven, so any new mutation (including selective apoptosis) which increases survivability and reproduction of an individual will persist and increase in the population. Outside of Monstera, Dracontioides and Raphidophora also have species with holes in their leaves. While many dicots have evolved compound leaves, far fewer monocots have followed suit; Zamioculcas, Amorphophallus and plants do not have a need to provide light to their lower leaves--the sun is only directly overhead for a small part of the day and even then only at the equator. Many of these hemi-epiphytes lose their lower leaves anyway. It's hard to imagine insects examining a leaf's shape before consuming it, but I suppose it is possible.

Hey! I bought an essential oil diffuser not too long ago but stopped using it after reading online that essential oils were actually toxic to houseplants and animals. It seems like your plants don't care at all though! I guess it's alright to use?

From my understanding botanical names can be pronounced however you wish. There is no standardized pronunciation.

Ordered the smaller humidifier from your link below for my new plants and some supplements for my dart frogs. Thank for the recommendation on the humidifier! 😉👍

Loved the tour! Im curious how you make the smaller moss poles like for your Bolivian form obliqua. Is it just a stake with moss wrapped around?
