Tangiers actually wasn't under Spanish rule; it was run as an International Zone during the time when the rest of the country was split between France and Spain. The British and Germans had the upper hand in the International City, and it was a haven for spies and a refuge for gay folk who wanted to escape the restrictions of Europe at the time.

@wender3060 2 года назад
In your fake book maybe. In reality Ceuta was conquered by Portugal and INHERITED by Spain. Spain never moved a weapon to get Ceuta therefore it can't be occupied. The local population is very happy with their Spanish rights, freedom and EU passports so doesn't look like an occupied people either.

@wender3060
@wender3060 2 года назад
@@mosadik1 Spain did evil colonizing Morocco in the 19 century, Spain colonized the Rif and the Sahara. But unlike other European countries, Spain gave everything back to their rightful owners. France scrambled Morocco lands in Argelia and Mauretania but Spain returned Rif to Morocco and withdrew from the Sahara in perfect timing with Moroccan moves to allow Morocco to recover it. The thing here is that Ceuta and Melilla are not related with the history of colonization and that's why they aren't in the colonization lists... Ceuta was part of states based on the Iberian peninsula since Phoenician times so had a very linked history to the peninsula. Anyway the Spanish ownership of these cities since 500 years ago has nothing to do with colonization but with medieval times and dynamics. Back then it was very common for Spanish coastal towns to be raided by Berber pirates, mainly Moroccan. They would appear in a coastal village and take lots of people as slaves and raid resources. Even today there's an expression "No hay moros en la costa" "There are no moors on the coast" which means that something is safe. Due to this, Portugal and then Castile took naval actions to hold small forts and positions in the north of Morocco to protect our lands from pirates. This is the origin of why Ceuta is Spanish today. Should these cities return to Morocco? Well, it's the same than the channel Islands. History has come to this situation and only the future will tell what happens with these 2 cities and the people that have been living there for 5 centuries. I would bet the small islands in the north will be ceded to Morocco soon and maybe one day Ceuta and Melilla get co sovereignty. But doesn't seem likely, probably the Spanish government will offer to recognize Moroccan Sahara and cede the small islands in exchange of Morocco strongly recognizing Wad ras treaty and accepting the fate of the autonomous cities

I am currently in Tangier and today I passed some cannons at Place des Nations and thought I'm sure I'd seen them before somewhere. I later realised they feature in your video which I watched a few times before travelling to Morocco. ! I have already been to Fes. Meknes, Chefchaouen and now Tangier. Your whole series gave me the inspiration to visit Morocco as a solo traveler and it's been a great trip. Thanks Gabe 👍

The 8-star ۞ represents the moorish identity of Morocco that dates back to the amazigh kingdom of Mauretania in 4th century BC, you'll find it in the ancient archeologic sites like Lixus and Vollubilis (which was the capital of the Mauretania back then) and during the Meridians and Saadians dynasties (from 12th to 17th century) a golden 8-star was the main symbol included to the red flag of Morocco and since then it has become one of the major symbols used in all traditional & architectural moroccan handicrafts, until the Alaouite dynasty (actual one) changed it to a green 5-star symbol.

The cannons couldn't be from 1226 and if they were Moroccan they wouldn't have Spanish written on them. Probably that date was referencing an earlier time and the cannons were from the 18th century.

@@crazynassim Like all such claims, the truth is somewhat complex and depends on definitions. As I understand it, The American Legation building in Tangiers dates to 1821 and the Moroccan-American Treaty of Friendship to 1786. The first US vice-consulate was established;ished in the Azores in 1790, and it was elevated to full consulate status in 1795... making it "the oldest, continuously-operating US Consulate in the world" according to their website. That being said, it was initially established on Faial island in Horta, and moved to Ponta Delgado on Sao Miguel in 1899, where it is now. Meanwhile, the American Legation building in Tangiers ceased its diplomatic role in the 1950s.
@crazynassim

@@goostrey4210 Maybe, but thats just not my claim ... The azores embassy wasnt owned by the US, it was just operated. While Tanger legation was owned by the US. So it's the first possetion interationaly.
