The fact that they made that science fiction movie in 1918 in a time where there only were simple types of aircrafts around ( although they were high-tech back then ) totally blows my mind... The power of imagination is truly limitless... Also, the coloring is PERFECT, it breathes new life in that gem of a movie... I could almost hear the actors talking... Simply amazing 🙂🙂

@@wordsofcheresie936 Yes I agree 😄😄 his eyes were really really creepy... I understand that back then the actors had to be EXTRA expressive because their voices couldn't be heard...yet...and that's why most of the time you see silent movie actors making those faces... @@wordsofcheresie936 I saw a documentary once about Laurel and Hardy. In an early film where they were together but not yet partners, Laurel ended up with pure white creepy eyes.This was due to some effect of the early cameras. Maybe something like that happened here; if so, colorisation won't help.

That wouldn't be unreasonable. Although debates and scientific progress on relativity started even before Einstein's special theory was published in 1905 (other variants of relativity were published a few years earlier), the general public conclusively believed that Einstein was right about relativity (and he became a celebrity) after Eddington's experimental verification of the general theory in 1919.

I think, it was already well known by 1918 that there was no free oxygen on Mars, from spectroscopy.

The film is good and instructive and the colorization was a success... There is a wonderful novel by Russian writer Alexei Tolstoy - "Aelita", published in 1923. In some ways it has something in common with this film. A highly developed civilization was also found on Mars, although not as humane as in the film. The rulers of Mars turned out to be descendants of terrestrial Atlanteans who flew to the red planet twenty thousand years ago. The astronaut from Earth there also fell in love with the daughter of the Martian ruler and, at the same time, took part in the uprising of the oppressed Martian proletarians. Tolstoy was a Soviet writer... 😊

@Anuclano

@@user-zo2zh9ts1j Я бы не сказал, что это зарождение космической эры. Тут космос такой же, как у Жюля Верна, Уэллса или в "Мюнхгаузене". У Лукиана и то реалистичнее было.

The restoration makes this have a look similar to restored telecined archives. It has that virtual video look, I'm not sure if that's how it's supposed to look.

I'm not sure that colorizing makes this better. The scenes and lighting were planned specifically for B&W film and so the shadows and contrasts are either subdued or completely lost when colors are added. I think it best that the director's original intention is left intact.
