Hey, it's Eric from wanderwitheric.com!
This time I wandered out to the seacoast city of Portsmouth, New Hampshire, to enjoy a TUNA SUB! Specifically, the U.S.S. Albacore submarine museum!
The Albacore was a state-of-the-art cold-war era submarine built by the U.S. Navy as a test bed to experiment with new technologies. In this role, it was highly successful, and helped the navy to develop many features that would become standard on future designs, right up to the present day!
I'll spend a few minutes talking about the background and history of submarine warfare, and why this sub was built. Next, we'll take a walk through the sub and see what we can see. Finally, I'll explore the adjacent Memorial Garden where submariners past and present are honored. If you'd like to skip around, use these timestamps to do so:

I was on the Albacore many times growing up as a Navy brat in Kittery Maine. My Dad served on her in the mid 50s through 1962. He was so proud of Albacore. She was really fast and set numerous submerged speed records. Really well done video!

Albacore looks the same for sure. We visited her a couple of years ago. I really enjoyed my visit. My Dad worked in the engine room and he said those GM 2 cycle diesels were a SOB to work on in those cramped quarters. He was in the submarine service during WWII and those boats had much more room in the engine room even though they were powered by locomotive diesels. His sub (Guavina) had Fairbanks Morse engines. Keep up the great work.

The first time I saw the Albacore was July 1961 at Groton, during my time in sub school. Sub duty was a great place for a snot nosed kid to grow up. I served aboard Pomodon and Aspro before mustering out in 1964. I had the pleasure of visiting the Albacore again in 2012. My thanks to those who underwent the monumental task of saving this historic boat.

As a former crew member of the Albacore - thx for ur interest & your! The Albacore set many records of submerged speed - maneuverability - overall training & functions of just what a submarine can do & set so many standards for the modern nuclear boats can accomplish- her motto “Forerunner of the future” and I am proud of my service aboard her & the setting of records!

Interesting! I just read up about Swede Momsen and the Squalis. Indeed, he was a VIP of submarine science and development, including the Albacore! I read a book about the post war submarines. The Navy had so much new technology to play with that they were hesitant to try it all out at once. So the first "teardrop" shape was tried with conventional tried and tested diesel electric power, while the first nuclear submarine, the Nautilus was of the older, conventional bow design. They didn't put it all together until they knew it all worked. They sent the Nautilus under the North Pole.
@wanderwitheric
@wanderwitheric Год назад
Yeah, that stuff is fascinating! I ran across the Nautilus during my research but chose to keep the info in this video focused on the Albacore as much as possible. Everything changed for military technology after WW2, and Submarines were no exception! Do you remember the name/author of the book you read? Thanks for watching and sharing some history!

Hey, Eric great vid. My dad served on the Albacore from 1965 to 1968. At 81 he still gives tours on the weekends. Though his mind is slipping a bit, he is still sharp as a tack when it comes to his boat. The control yokes are from a F85 warplane. Shakey Graves ran the galley. The loss of the Thresher hit dad hard, lots of friends on board. I plan on showing this vid to him tomorrow, thanks, man!

While the US navy never made normal use of silver zinc batteries in it's submarines, the Soviets did. The batteries are very energy dense but have a short life and were expensive due to the silver content. Soviet submarines fitted with them had the batteries replaced every two years.
@wanderwitheric
@wanderwitheric Год назад
Interesting! I don't know much about the batteries used on the Albacore, since I didn't take the time to read the sign, but I understand they were pretty advanced for the time, and the sub had two separate blocks of them. I was curious how the energy in one of those state-of-the-art cold war era sub batteries compares to our modern technologies. How long could they power the sub using my cell-phone battery? I confess I'm not the most knowledgeable person about such things. Thanks again for sharing your insights, Brian!
@wanderwitheric

I hope the US subs never have to be "tested" against the Russian ones in a serious way. I appreciate the technology no matter who designed it, and the people who work on and serve aboard these ships are respectable no matter what color uniform they wear.

I know what you mean, Michael! For me, it's not so much the enclosed space as the possibility of drowning to death! Take the sub out of the water and I have no problem going inside! I understand there was a Foxtrot sub on display in San Diego, California as well, but it was scrapped in 2021. Unfortunately, I never had a chance to see it myself. It would be interesting to see the inside of a Soviet sub from around the same time period as the Albacore to see how the two compare and contrast.
@briananthony4044
@briananthony4044 Год назад

Interesting walk-through...a few years back I had the opportunity to go aboard the SS 383 Pampanito, a WWll Balao Class Fleet sub. Walking through it gave me a new definition of cramped. The machinery and controls we cutting-edge for the time but looking at them with a 21st century eye, they were "primative". Having two subs to compare, I still am glad that I never was part of the "Silent Service".

Those pancake engines were suppose to make interior packaging more efficient as they were tall rather than long. If they are the engines I'm thinking of, they were mounted vertically on top of the generator, great in theory, but the engine leaked into the generator creating shorts and other problems. In the fleet subs they were eventually scrapped, the submarine lengthened and conventional engine sets installed.
@wanderwitheric
@wanderwitheric Год назад
Interesting! Yes, they definitely had a vertical configuration. I don't know a lot about them, but I did read while doing my research that they had reliability issues. Another reason why it was good to have a test-bed sub! You don't want mechanical problems in the middle of a potential combat scenario! Thanks for sharing your insight, Brian!

Consider that every submariner that earned his water wings: the subsurface warfare badge, he had to know what every one of those dials, knobs, handles, controls, and "thingies" was for, and how to use them. We really owe quite a bit to the folks that chose to serve us by sailing in this kind of environment for months at a time.

It's crazy to think that any one person could know how to operate everything on the sub, but I could see how that would be important in an emergency situation. If part of the sub's crew were unable to perform their duties, it would be important to have someone else that could step in and perform those actions. Indeed, anyone who serves aboard one of these vessels has more courage than me! I have a healthy dose of respect for anyone who has served or currently serves in such a capacity!
