WHO WE ARE
SkyFi Audio is a small startup business specializing in the purchase, reconditioning, and reselling of select high end audio equipment. We only buy equipment that we admire and are passionate about. No mid-fi, no gimmicks, and no junk.
Each piece of equipment is cosmetically restored and fully tested in our well-equipped lab by an engineer with 30+ years of experience in the HiFi world. If it does not meet or exceed the original manufactures specifications, it will not be sold. We are very selective about the equipment we purchase, focusing on mostly analog, high-build quality, American, and European built units.

Nice video! The gold tonearm actually looks nice, but maybe overall just a little too much bling. The added DJ features I see as a bit of a turn off for an audiophile.

It is a DJ table, hence the features 😜

In 2003 audiophiles didn't care about vinyl at all, this model (like the others already said) was solely aimed for club dj's 😄

This gold color is actual gold plating, which is so much better than the fake gold on the 1200M7L tonearms... but still way too blingy IMO (I've had one for a short time). IMO, the brushed matte aluminium of the 1200G is way more stylish. Fun fact: that knurled knob on the side is exclusive to this GLD and M5G (same for the illuminated digital pitch control with 8/16% range). The knob on the side is basically a plunger, a teflon pin with a spring behind it. For those who are into archery sports: that plunger is much like the plunger on a recurved/compound bow. By turning it clockwise you screw it in and that pin pushes against the horisontal axis/bracket to provide resistance. It's a bad way to provide horizontal damping, since it's friction based instead of the fluid dampers that are based on drag (dynamic friction). You should always rotate it half a turn anti-clockwise in order to disengage it. It obstructs the free movement of the arm! For heavy scratching it reduced the chances of a skippng arm, but in an hifi setup you don't want this at all... Oh and btw, have you noticed the behaviour of the tonearm lift on this one? It feels a lot like the tonearm lift on the 1200G, but nothing like the tonearm lift on the 1200GR/GR2... That's because the 1200G uses an exact replica of the lift damping mechanism inside of this one and all the other 1200MK2 - 1200MK6 legacy decks!

Wow, thanks for this plethora of great information. I understand what the knob does now, and see how a fluid dampened system would be preferable. I did notice how good the lifter is on this model, wow.

@@SkyFiAudio You're welcome. I've serviced and modded a few 1200 variants in the past, so I've actually seen the insides of the legacy 1200s a few times over. Also opened up my current 1200G and 1200M7L to do some mods not too long ago. Opening things up helps a lot in understanding devices, especially things that are more mechanical by nature.

I saw 2 of these gold Technics tables at a Guitar center. They were there after a famous DJ played in Tijuana,MX and demanded these two new tables to do his set. $4k for both. I should have jumped on that opportunity.

for sure, would have made a tidy profit on them.

When this model came out the "superclub scene" was at it's peak and dj's were still heavily invested in vinyl. My friend (let's just say he was running some popular nightclubs) had a pair of these at his home studio. I miss those days so much 💔
@SkyFiAudio
@SkyFiAudio 2 месяца назад
what percentage of DJs still use vinyl do you think?
@MLX1401
@MLX1401 2 месяца назад
@@SkyFiAudio On a regular basis, pretty much none. But sometimes a "classics set" is booked with the equally classic SL-MK and Pioneer/Rane mixer setup. It's always a blast. Pickups and (those annoying fixed) rca-cables sometimes cause trouble but even after storage time the turntables themselves are amazingly reliable 😁

Platter is actually sprayed with a transparent gold lacquer. M5G also had OFC wiring as did MK6. Ironic that the new models went back to tin plated copper except 1000R. The lateral weight idea was lifted from Vestax and is simply a spring loaded graphite bar that introduces a "controlled' friction to reduce the lateral response of the arm for stable scratching. For us audiophiles, this should not be engaged.
@SkyFiAudio
@SkyFiAudio 2 месяца назад
great info thanks. That must be why I have a bit of pitting on the platter.
@kevinatkab5219
@kevinatkab5219 2 месяца назад
@@SkyFiAudio i would think just the opposite, the lacquer should protect the platter. I had often wished they did that or clear anodized all of them.

At the moment I’m comparing my 3 TTs, the AT-LP140XP, the AT SP2022, and the Technics SL-1200G. I love listening to ALL of them, and cannot say that one is better then the other.

A question... When I'm listening to a song on RU-vid, how can I identify whether that song is a lossless audio file or a lossy audio file? Where can I see the specifications of the audio being played to know if it is, for example: a “WAVE” or “FLAC” format (without loss of quality) or if it is an “MP3” file (where there was compression and loss of quality)? Is there an extension for the Chrome browser that shows in real time the specifications of the audio being played? I visited RU-vid's audio file guidelines and it says the following... “[...] Supported file formats: (1) MP3 audio in MP3/WAV container, (2) PCM audio in WAV container, (3) AAC audio in MOV container, and (4) FLAC audio. Minimum audio bit rate for lossy formats: 64 kbps. Minimum audible duration: 33 seconds, excluding silence and background noise. Maximum duration: none “[...]”. Therefore, RU-vid accepts both lossless audio files and lossy audio files.

Nice video! At the same time they re-released the SP10-MK2 this time with a plinth and arm. $19,000.00. I have an old sp-10 a heck of a table! New one is called SL-100R.

This one is for the music man who likes bling over genuine audiophile, hifidelity pursuit - In that regard the SP10-MKll / MK3 and current SL-1000R are top draw and class 💫

This version does seem more so for DJs than audiophiles with the extra DJ pitch button and that side arm base adjustment.

Yes for sure. There are a lot of DJ specific features on it. This was made before the SL1200's were re-designed for the home market.

For what Technics charged for them, If I had one, it would run VERY NEARLY 365! All that glam would be working its xss off, transferring all the precious vinyl to tape, and MD!

Amazing! Legend like 1200 deserves a special version in bling. I would def modify IEC mains power socket and interconnect outlet to fit some quality cables.
