I love little amps like this. Has basically one sound, crank it up and enjoy! I've used my little Gretsch 5W amp with a 2x12 cabinet a few times for smaller gigs too, works really well.
From Leo: Good sound engineering. It is not often I hear stereo channel separation and proper blending on you tube videos. Very enjoyable to listen when using good headphones. That looks like a fun little amp.
I'll share an old studio trick to get some extra mileage out of these inexpensive/smaller tube amps. If you add a "speaker out" jack to these smaller valve amps, you can get some pretty intense tones from using different speakers, and cabinets. You're just turning it into an amp head. A 5 watt amp can sound pretty large through a 4x10" or 4x12". If nothing else, it's fun to play with.
@@51MontyPython Disconnect the speaker, note the Ohms!. Connect the speaker wires to an output jack. Plug in matching Ohm speaker cab of any configuration. That's the basics. There are always some variables involved, like wire connections, etc... but that's the basic idea. You're just replacing the speaker. Again, match the Ohms!!!
ravenslaves Thanks for the tip - I've done just that, putting it through either its (very good) Celestion 8") or I run it through a Celestion G12 H 50hz in a big cab with simple reverb and tonally it knocks spots of my 40w tube modelling amp! You're right too about it sounding 'pretty large' for 5 watts, even through the single 12. Cheers 👍
I recently purchased one of these and I'm very impressed with it. Beautiful clean tones.. it's really loud for 5 watts. I use a processor for my distortion as it needs to be turned up quite loud to allow for breakup. Louder than the usual volume I normally play at in my house. It does however have that authentic vintage valve sound quality as demonstrated in this video. Thanks for the demo Shane. Very informative. Great channel.
Suggestion, add a decibel meter when you are miking up an amp in order for the audience to get a visual representation of the sound volume that you play at. Thank you for the video.
AWESOME demo Shane. There was only one other demo of this amp previously and I was wondering when you were going to review this one! Nice job on showcasing the tones. I enjoyed listening:)
Way back when I went to try out for a band. I brought my bedroom tone. A lot of Reverb and distortion I was a rockstar. It didn't work in that situation I had to turn the Reverb and the distortion off and I realized man I suck.
Had one of these since they released them a year or so ago. Great little amp for home and kicks ass with a couple of pedals. $240 if I recall and worth every cent IMO..
those lil eight 15's get better sound than I thought. I have a Joyo BanTcaB that has one and its a great practice amp speaker. This lil tube beastie looks nice and just the right power level to jam with the stereo and not disturb the flatmates!
If Artist want to earn a crap load of money, then offer this for the Home Studio market: Head only 5/2.5 watt switchable. On the Face; proper tone circuit with Bass/Mid/Treble. Volume and Gain circuit. High quality digital or spring Reverb. Standby switch a plus but not necessary . On the back; Multi-Ohm speaker output, Headphone/Emulated speaker output, Effects Loop! At present, Blackstar are the closest to offering that kind of set up, but even they fall short on some specs.
I think Darrell Braun Guitar has demoed a similar amp from Mono Price, Harley Benton certainly has something very simlar too, though theirs are in a white heavily textured tolex. The tweed looks so much better.
@@intheblues Yeah, I think his might have been the 15 watt version, come to think of it. So you're right, more controls for sure. But this is good, it's great to see more of these little amps, "sqwak boxes" as a friend calls them. I think they're great. Thanks for sharing, Shane. :)
Good tones and a very good speaker. Had a Fender "Champion" back in the day which was let down by the speaker. Obviously the Artist Tweed Tone V is based on the Champ and it would be a pretty good recording Amp in some situations as well as being a practice amp.
It’s sounds really great for 250$. Really great! Awesome sustain. I did laugh out loud when you showed the opened back. Besides the Celestion, It looks like toy components as opposed to my Marshall.
It looks and sounds pretty much like the Monoprice and Harley Benton 5w tube amps. I suppose buy the one that's most available/affordable where you live.
Yeah, the circuit is going to be similar if not exactly the same as the monoprice, Harley Benton, etc etc as the Champ 5f1 circuit is often copied. The presence knob is a nice addition
Presence knob is the same of tone knob (😅). I'm thinking about buy this amp but.. Well..Harley benton do this thing for just 133 euros.. And with attenuator & ext cab.. So I don't know to do.. Any suggestions?
It looks like a great wee bedroom amp - but I’ll never understand why manufacturers so often sabotage amps by using tiny cabs. The Vox P10 has a bigger cab and despite the 6.5” speaker, it sounds surprisingly great, for the same purpose. I preferred it to my DSL15 for low volume practice, as it sounded better when I needed to keep the noise down. Anyone wanting a basic practice amp (for not much money) should check out the P10.
Not sure where you are situated but if you care for a little modification on the Pathfinder I got a speaker from leading edge electronics to replace fairly awful bulldog,it's not a particularly efficient speaker so does a great job of taking the treble in the Pathfinder
Roland Microcube would be my choice at this price point for home use. This Artist amp just doesn't tick any boxes for me. Although, at the price point it's better than expected for a tube amp.
I wonder how this stacks up against the Joyo Sweet Baby 5W. Might be a champion mini stereo rig! Edit: I think the Joyo has a slightly more resonant cab - but both amps could benefit from rehousing in a larger, better cab. They just don't sparkle like the old Fender Champs. There's a muffled quality - the "blanket over the speaker" thing. Certainly not the worst case of this effect I've encountered (hellooo Blackstar and Marshall low wattage combos) but compared with a 70s SF Champ...chalk and day.
I’ve been trying to convince myself that I don’t need anymore gear and then this video!!!😭😭😆😆😆 It’s ironic that this video is out at the same time I was thinking about picking up a Fender Champ at Southpaw Guitars!! From the sounds you got out of this Artist Tweedtone V, I think this is the real deal! A five watt tube amp is a cool thing to have around the house. I would like to know how the tones compare to the Bugera V5 Infinium you used to own. Appreciate the video and for possibly making my wallet lighter!😝😝 Cheers!!🎸🎸🎸🎸
Hey Shane. Nice review. I have a Joyo JA-05. Like the 6V6 in the output and Celestion speaker. How does the Tweed Tone V compare in your opinion with the Joyo in real life?
The amp sounds great; liked it with the Fender, not so much with the Vola (that guitar sounded exceptionally thin and 'slappy', IMO even on the1 and 5 settings). Maybe the shortcoming of a small cab and 8" speaker?
Really dig my Bugera V5. It works perfect when my friend uses his Alesis drum kit. I got it used for $120 at GC! Go figure my most inexpensive amp might sound the best...
Holy smokes $584! That’s crazy. Mines the blue light one not the newer one but still! At that price you might as well spend a couple hundred more on blues junior...
It sounds great -- my Wangs VT-5 is at neighbor-pissing-off volume by the time it gets dirty. It even has the same speaker. And while I haven't put any new tubes in, I think the Artist sounds better. Chances of finding one of these on the used market in the US is probably not good tho.
What's the difference between the artist 5w champ clone and the Joyo sweet baby 5w champ clone? Seems there's major differences between the 2. Which would you prefer of the 2?
Well I know my next Tube amplifier I'm going to buy in swap out the tubes for vintage RCA 12AU7 tubes like I did with my Gibson ga5 LP reissue because I do not like high gain
You'd never credit how easy it is to piss off the neighbours with a little amp. My 1 Watt Blackstar with 8" speaker could get me kicked out . Forget the Laney IRT 15 Studio, even in 1 Watt mode. Pushing a 12" speaker she belts it out. The Bassbreaker 15 Combo is almost giggable so daytime use only for that one. Load boxes are my friends. I was working towards a barn studio on a small-holding. Instead I ended up in an oldies sheltered complex ... I might have to start believing in reincarnation just to get my plan off the ground ... 🤣👳♂️👼🧙♂️
Thanks for that Shane, sounds really good ! I decided to buy one after that (couple of months ago now) but they're not available 'til April !! Meanwhile I was wondering how does this compare to the Vox AC 4 you reviewed? I'm into tone around JJ Cale to Stones, my main amp is a George Benson Deluxe, and I love that tone ! Would love to know the answer if you have time :)
I know us Yanks generally get lots of great gear that is hard to get somewhere else, but it's a shame the Artist U.S. website doesn't sell any of their tube amps. They seem like good stuff every time you review one.
@@gianlucab.9154 from what i understand the hb one is set up for euro style power cord. The monoprice one is very good but i did swap out the tube after awhile. I also really like the speaker out mines going into a marshall 4x12
I think hb is exactly the same thing than monoprice one. Just rebranded. A sort of champ clone. For the things offered seems to be a huge competitor of this artist tweed.
I have a modelling Fender Mustang GTX50 and only a couple of pedals. Love the sound coming from this amp, size and weight, however if I add a couple of pedals, price will go to the price range of the Tweed Tone 20r. What will I do? Good question! Cheers
Well mate, I’ve been looking at there bigger tweed yet I have fender tube ri reverb deluxe and hot rod but thi be great to play as my practice amp even with a pedal or 2. Which may make it easier to get an interface for Mac thunderbolt to try some recording on logic. As I’m veteran pensioner money tight. Not sure to go the gen 3 focus right or what to record. But I’m going to order one of these. Any help with picking interface for recording into my mac. By way the hoodie and t shirt In the Blues turned up and are fantastic. That was a great stream live the night caught you. Living with my service dog trooper golden retriever near Tweed heads on nSw side Pottsville. I’d love a delay or reverb. The Geer Tomahawk pedal best Tweed 57 tone pedal drive I picked up go great yet I love your royal flush jut trying to find one lol. Use your link since it was veterans pension last week to help support channel.this will be perfect as I don’t sleep well. I’d send a photo wearing the hoodie or shirt yet hard to take alone. Family of 11 yrs marriage left me when my ptsd got bad enough to ask for help. (Such great help from x took both our kids and everything left me out to dry) so it’s play guitar Blues and old school rock and my photography. Rate in the Blues the best most honest channel on utube that’s why I went and payed for a shirt And hoodie, which was my pedal money lol, yet I will find the royal flush Nd or the delay you used on this sounded great. Blues deluxe amp maybe later or a black guard Tele to go with my Strats. Or would you recommmend maybe changing speaker in the hot rod deluxe to ?? As my RI deluxe reverb will always stay. Your Tele gets me every time always wanted that traditional model love my Fender Strats been many yrs since new guitar. Sorry bit long just inspired by the clip and just afford the amp if postage ok. Any slight help on the interface and maybe the amp question as pretty much seem to like same style music. Hopefully find that pedal re-save but be warm in hoodie. I’m going to try hard to keep eye out to make it to live streams but stay strong keep on playing those great riffs and licks. This busted and getting older to fast soldier will always support and watch your shows. Finally that tweed sound I’ve wanted and it recorded really well with. The mics. Cheers Matt n Trooper (the dog loves blues and guitars as well lmao) 👍😎🇦🇺
You're making it sound great. But an 8" speaker just has its physical limits and the boxiness can't really be fixed. For that price, an extension speaker output would be a total must. My little Monoprice "Stage Right" amp has one and costs under 100$. (Celestion speaker as well ...)
I use to think the same thing about 8” speakers. Don’t believe it - it ain’t about the speaker. It’s about cabinet size. I have Vox Pathfinder amplifiers with 8” speakers, you can easily fit a 10” speaker into it and almost could fit a 12”. And that thing rumbles!! And I had a vintage Jensen C8R reconed with a hemp cone - and that speaker kills the stock one in that combo. Trust me, when correctly engineered 8s can sound massive as long as it’s a quality 8” to begin with
I just purchased this amp, had a 5w valve amp many moons ago that was very loud, this amp on full volume barely breaks up and is quite low on the volume side. Not sure what the issue is?
Is it appropriate for me to say how saddened I am to hear of the passing of the late great Peter Green? Rest in Peace one of the most soulful blues rock players ever.
Tweed is the material over the amplifier. The tonal character of tweed amps are thicker lower-mids sound and they break up in a really cool way when you turn them right up. Tweed amps were a thing in the 50s and continue to get made till this day because it's a rock n roll sort of sound.
