6months in on my Cardiothoracic ICU and I will begin recovering hearts in a couple of months... I'm so nervous!!!! I have to agree though that cticu is so rewarding, to see patients have open heart surgery and walk out the door 3-7 days later like... WHAT!!!!

This semester I will be taking AnP 2 and microbiology. After those classes I will be ready to apply for the nursing program. I was questioning myself about the posibility of succeding in the program especially after listening to all the technical terms you utilized. The last part motivated me to know anything is possible with hard work. Thank you Brad.

It is chaotic in the beginning because a lot to look out for and the bleeding is most important. Then usually it’s just monitoring but once you start to titrate drips then it gets busy. True though how much you learn over the years and applying it to practice now is great.

Wow I haven’t heard from you in a while, I went through nursing school the same time as you, and listening to you speaking is amazing! You are phenomenal, I ended up going into mental health nursing because I just don’t have the brain or desire for all of that stuff you just talked about. Some would say MH nursing is something they definitely couldn’t do, I feel like it’s nothing compared to the stress & work you have with your patients

Sounds like a lot going on. I just started another ER position in a new hospital and am feeling like a new nurse yet again getting use to protocols and the computer system. What is your ratio on your unit I would guess 2 per RN but you could be more.
@NurseBass
@NurseBass 6 лет назад
ER Nurse & Gamer It depends on the patient. For stable post op day 1-3 patients, we can go as high as 1:3. But for the fresh post op patient, or the VAD/CRRT/IABP/Impella patients, it is often 1:1

Did you start in ICU as a new grad or did you work med/surg first for a little and then transfer over? I would looove to do cardiac ICU eventually but I don't know how much experience I need to land a position like yours?
@NurseBass
@NurseBass 6 лет назад
Super happy to hear that you finished Nursing School and that the content has been helpful man. That's awesome! And I went straight into the SICU right out of Nursing School as a new grad. To be honest, it really just depends on the need in your area for critical care nurses. If there is a Nursing shortage, specifically CC Nurses, then your chances are higher for sure. That was the case for me. There was a great need for Critical Care Nurses so the local hospital I work at now was more inclined to hire new graduate nurses directly into the ICUs. All in all, there were about 11 of us that got hired into ICUs right out of Nursing School!

@NurseBass
@NurseBass 6 лет назад
Magdiel ramirez I started on this very unit as a new grad. And what did I do? Just grind man. I put the work in whenever I did a clinic rotation through the department. And my clinic instructor for that semester ended up going on to become the Assistant Director of the department that I now work on. So I quote/unquote had my foot in the door. So it’s very important to always give 100% in those clinicals. You never know who is watching :)
