A Unique Approach to Rehab in Indonesia

We traveled to Indonesia to buy sandals made by former drug addicts. The shoes, called "junkies," are a part of a program started by the YAKITA Drug Treatment Center to help women suffering from addiction learn a marketable skill. Indonesia experienced a drug epidemic in the 1980s due to rapid economic growth and the increased availability of new drugs; YAKITA was started in 1999 as a response to this crisis. Hannah spends the day at the center getting to know the girls and chatting about shoes and drugs.

thank u VICE, i'm an indonesian and i never came across such thing in my life. i never knew that even non-locals living in indonesia are trying to help local drug addicts to have a clearer purpose in life. looking at this video, i'm hoping for a greater success for my country and of course, to other countries as well

great video Vice it's very informative and interesting, but one suggestion is that you guys should include the link to the website where you can buy the shoes online if they have one or the website of the rehab clinic if they have one. just a thought

Stateside, yes. But here in Indonesia drug addicts are treated like subhumans. Programs like this, I believe, are uncommon. It looks like to be a private, non-government program too. That should give you a hint on how poor drug rehab programs are here.

Thanks VICE for visiting Indonesia. It's different side of our country.. The law here is jail and even death punishment for drug dealers but for users, they must be got some rehabilitation.

I was a heroin addict for 8 years and most of the girls making those shoes are still using. You can tell from their eyes. I'm not dissing them - I've relapsed more times than I can count and was only able to stay clean by getting on Suboxone, but it's just kind of funny that this is a story about ex-junkies, when most of them are still junkies. The reporter knew it too. You can tell by the way she responded to what they said - an ex heroin addict can usually tell when another addict is high.

Thank you for the video.. It means a lot to me. I didn't know Indonesia have a good treatment place like this. This is supposed to be Indonesian look like help each other and being happy regardless what happen. The video story making me cry. I don't see all the addict are sad or struggle. They forget on the past and move on. I hope Indonesian Goverment see this video and make contribution and help all the victems specially on free treatment. I hope you all well. I speed-balled,shot heroin, shot coke, smoked coke, for 15 yrs. Every day - $1,000/wk. I stopped in 2000 and have been clean now for 13 yrs. My pic is in real time. I'm 56. I didn't go away, I moved to the town next door, so I couldn't run outside with a $10.00 bill and cop and I wasn't runnin', to cop. The best to help with kicking was sitting on the beach (couldn't move, anyway) & getting in the ocean now and then. I'm happy those places are around, also. I live in NYC. God Bless you GreatLuck

Keep going forward. Never put yourself down. It actually took me 3 years to fully kick, get back into society. Kept my first apt. for 8 years, This is the fourth year in my new apt. I told the L.Lrd., I don't want to move unless I'm in a body bag.The best thing was, I had to be employed for 3 yrs. I loaded & unloaded trucks.Boy, did I slam them cases, but it was a job. Out ar 5:30AM, home at 7PM.I had a down coat on, a turtle neck and a wool sweater in August.Cops would've arrested me for looks

Hello friend, just here to help you with your English. Use "and" instead of "n" and make sure to capitalize singular "I', as in not "i". Lastly use "you" instead of "u", you might be seen as unintelligent, that's all for now lol.

Remind me to never try to help people with one of the most difficult languages to learn ever again, if you think I was being sarcastic, I wasn't. Would you rather me say nothing and have people speak the language incorrectly? Probably not. It really sucks living in a time where people take recognition of failure as being condescending.

Also, when it is recorded as someone dying from tobacco it is usually from some very long term disease, that could potentially be genetically based, but since the user happened to smoke, they label the cause as being from tobacco... while on the other hand (I just looked it up) there aren't many long term effects besides brain damage and mood imbalance with heroin so all those recorded deaths are pretty much overdoses where the direct cause is heroin

Nowdays things change... B*N which is like a crazy maniac against drugs group give a new standard of rehabilitation in Indonesia.. they use wrong method of TC more like military brain washing for at least 6 months, it's just crazy and many people relapse almost 90% of them. but they keep using that method, i think it's because they love to do bullies... and the seniority system. they kinda giving me a trauma.. -___-

This is beautiful. We are all going to die eventually so why get stuck on the idea of making ourselves more miserable in the process? If you've ever been addicted you probably understand this to some degree. Even non addicts for that matter... Self medication is one thing but hiding from the reality is another all together. Good job Vice.

I liked this story and that fact that these women were given the chance to better themselves. Substance abuse is a hard thing to kick. Wish there were more centers like this for everyone

My family has a history of heroin use as well..and the point I want to make is if one has a consistent supply of heroin the damage to the body, is minimal- that is to say reversible. More than the effects of cigarette smoke. Opiates don't cause damage to the body or cells like smoking. They are used in hospitals around the world everyday. Its the costs of the heroin and the addiction process which is so destructive to all of us.

This seems like such a peaceful place. Every treatment center I've been to has felt way too controlling, demeaning and almost belittling in an odd way. That and very static/depressing feeling. There certainly is little peace in these types of places in America unless you're paying top dollar for a treatment center in Florida or California. But that teeters on the edge of "vacation" versus recovery center. And the keyword in any treatment like this should be "recovery". Not restraint.
