So the battle begins! AVR vs Amp!! So I put my Denon AVR-X6300H (140wpc) against my Parasound Halo Integrated (160wpc). I used the track 'Solar Sailer' from the Tron Legacy Original Motion Soundtrack. Check out the test, and more importantly, what I found out in this test.

About This Video:
In this video we pit a high-priced AVR with a high-priced, 2 channel amplifier. This test isn't super scientific, but it's more of a real world example of two recordings in my living room. Check out the test and the results!

Volume knobs arent allways linear. So you will allways see different db's if you put different amps at the same knob level. This makes you draw the wrong conlusions. A better test would be to measure when both amps are putting out a specific db level, and then compare the sound to see if it responds faster, is more clean, more detailed, etc.
@112rorz
@112rorz 6 лет назад
100% this is the first thing I thought when he said he set the volume to 50% on both. How do we know what 50% volume correlates to for each individual device? Maybe 50% volume on the Denon pushes out 10 Watts and the Amp pushes out 40 Watts at 50%. Very silly test IMO.

I agree this test was terrible, expecting that if you set the volume knob at the halfway point on two different branded amps that they'd sound the same is dumb. Even if they were the same brand I wouldn't do that, even if they were the same brand and model I wouldn't be surprised if there was slight differences. He should've played white noise or pink noise and used an SPL meter to find a point where the speakers are at a similar SPL when connected to both amps and then play some music on both amps at that level and judge the sound quality.

You measured a Denon AVR vs a Parasound 2 ch amp using volume knobs at same position? Doesn't seem logical at all TBH.
@TechnoDad
@TechnoDad 6 лет назад
Alright, so how about this test then...if the speaker sensitivity of my Klipsch RP-280F is 98db, then at 1 meter away from the speaker with 1 watt I'll get 98db, right? I have to double the wattage to gain 3db, right? So in theory I'd have to double the wattage eight times to get 128 watts (less than advertised output) and I should reach 119db. Does that sound right to you? Do you think the Denon X6300H will actually get my speakers to 119db at 1 meter away?
@TechnoDad
@TechnoDad 6 лет назад
2.828 volts is 1 watt into 8 ohms, look it up or do the math. I'll just put it this way...my car engine outputs 333 HP, but that's not the HP I'll get at the wheel. A bench test for an amp is exactly that, a bench test. You actually think you're getting 150 watts coming out of your speakers? You're not. Why don't you go and test out your AVR and come back with some real world results instead of someone else's bench test. The AVR companies can give numbers from their bench as well, but that won't be what we are getting at the speaker.

It was not always like this. If you bought in 1980 a 100 watt/channel stereo receiver from a brand like Pioneer , you would know 2 things: 1) It would indeed do max 100 watt/channel with little to no distortion (anyone remembers the advertised 0,001% distortion numbers?) 2) Inside the Pioneer receiver you would find the same amplifier components of the seperate 100 watt Pioneer amplifier. Thus the big receivers and the seperate amplifiers delivered the same sound. Today it is a very diffrent situation. Many of the Home Theater In A Box sets and entry level A/V Receivers put a large number of watt per channel (like 100-200 watt) on their spec, and then in very tiny letters sth like (at 10% THD) next to it. Believe me listening music that is 10% distorted is not only unlistable, it wrecks your speakers instantly. Equipment that can produce big numbers of watts of undistorted music is going to be heavy and very expensive. Two things modern A/V receivers not often are anymore. It's a real shame companies with a big legacy like Pioneer and Yamaha no longer put out fair Watt RMS specs anymore, but I guess that is just what the mass market has become. When most people buy stuff, they look for thinks like bluetooth applications, many HDMI inputs, dolby atmos stickers and so one. They don't realise you can only get great sound, if the build quality of your equipment is great. Seperates on the other hand are aimed a very diffrent type of users. If you want to spend lots of money on a very complicated setup, you will want the best sound and the best build quality. the few companies left that make such equipment will do their best effort to deliver.

I havent even cleaned the insight since i bought it and i just sounds great! Mine is very entry level, but the higher ones look also the part and they are easy to track for a little amount.

yeah I learned the hard way been a music lover since mid 80s I made the mistake buying an newer av receiver that said it was 180watts l yeah I took it back my 1987 J.V.c RX 550v rocks out with big power ! it weighs at least 40 pounds and sounds amazing on music ! it plays 8ohm at 50wpc 4ohms at 100 wpc and it was made in Japan it has built in eq with led display now days to get that power and clarity you have to buy an amp in 1997 I got lucky and bought a display model Yamaha rx 396 it rocks also its very heavy and sounds great paired with a Sansui se9 eq and my klispch 2.5 kg from 1997 why don't they make them like they use to ?

What is the best option? Upgrade my avr from marantz, or get an separately stereo amplifier? I have an marantz sr6008 combination with Boston acoustics m 340 plus the center and m25. I'm looking at either going for the marantz sr7013 first, or go for the marantz pm7000n or cxa81 from Cambridge. Music is more priority than movies. So for improvement in the music department, I'm guessing the stereo amplifiers will give me more enchantment than going for an avr like the sr7013? Thanks in advance for the feedback!

I recently had to return my Onkyo rz810 because after a night off partying the next day my Onkyo had a NG LB RB code on the screen and could not reset it so I returned it and got the Marantz. I guess my question is if the Marantz will handle at least 6-7 hours of play at a decent level of music or will I need a dedicated power amp for my front 2. Thank you

What a terrific video! It goes without saying, separates if you can do it, is the only way to go. I'm from the old school. Back when ya bought a speaker, or speakers. You alwa2, always ran a mono block or 2 channel power amp. Fast forward to audio/video integration and.. bingo! I run 10 separate power amps in my current system. Not counting subs. Me and my wife have a dedicated listening room of 30x25. People have a hard time believing that a true 60wpc power amp will smoke anything the a/v receiver will push. Thanks again for a terrific video.

Power amps have more headroom and take the strain off of your AVR. Not only will the regular listening volume go up but the dynamic shifts in your content will be more noticeable.

How does this work with speakers that are considered more “sensitive.” I’ve heard klipsch speakers are more sensitive and require less power to produce volume and dynamic sound. I have 2 front jbl loft 50 towers with the matching loft 20 centre channel. I’m running a set of klipsch r-15m speakers as satellites and a klipsch r-10sw sub. I’m in the process of upgrading to an all klipsch set up as I am under the impression that klipsch speakers preform more dynamically than many other speakers. What are your thoughts techno dad?

I found this video pretty much way later but do things actually sound better with the amplifier versus just the AVR or is it just more volume I mean if I'm using an amplifier and I set the volume to 30 and if I'm using a receiver and if I set the volume to 60 will I be hearing the exact same thing as far as audio quality? Were you able to discern a difference apart from the obvious volume level difference?
@TechnoDad
@TechnoDad 5 лет назад
Hi Jose! When you have to keep turning up your AVR you may find some areas of distortion if the AVR doesn't power your speakers enough. It's highly recommended to overpower your speakers so they have ample power and headroom for large dynamic shifts in content. Like in a movie when it's all quiet and then there's a big explosion. An AVR will struggle with that dynamic hit with 5, 7, 9, or 11 channels that it has to drive. With a power amp, you will be able to experience that explosion with authority as the amp has plenty of headroom for doing such a thing.

The Denon also has individual level adjustments for inputs and for each speakers(12db increase or decrease)I'm curious if maxing those will get the rated output,at least in stereo.And I think ECO mode will also influence the output. I wish they would have made a pre.Take the 1300,take out the power amp,add some rca connectors,and done.500$/€ 7.1 pre. Adding an amp makes sense, but after you do and want to improve 2 channel music, should you buy a prepro or a 2.1 preamp with home theater bypass? Do you have your Hint 6 with your home theater using the bypass option? If you do, how does it compare with 2 channel music to your reciever, using the preouts to an external amp?

hi..thanks for putting up a great video explaining the subtle differences in really pushing out magic from the speakers...as you rightly said, the AVR advertised power really doesnt deliver the way its supposed to... i have a HT set up - Yamaha Aventage RX 1040 AVR Receiver (rated 110 watts per channel and 2 channel driven/ 135 watts 1 channel) paired with PSB Imagine X2T floorstanders (Nominal 8 Ohms, Minimum 4 Ohms rated, 90 DB sensitivity) + Imagine XC Center Channel (Same Ohms and sensitivity as X2Ts) + ELAC B5 (6 Ohms)+ SVS PB-1000 powered sub woofer. The AVR has 5 channel pre-outs for connecting to a pre-amp/power amp. The set up is used 60% for Movies and 40% for music. All content played is through streaming over wifi or HDMI inputs from cable set top box or content from the macbook air (no JR river or similar apps being used and source output is direct). The room size is 25 ft length, 15 ft width and 10 feet height. For now i'm pretty happy with the set up - usually max decibal levels are around -10 DB (AVR volume range is -69 DB to +16 DB). But i 'think' adding a dedicated power amp for 3 front channels can add alot to the dynamic range, sound stage and overall headroom. had a few questions, would be great if you can help - 1. Basic question - Would adding a solid state power amp or an integrated pre amp make a huge difference? (iUnderstand Integrated amps help add more sources but lose out on what crucial - i.e power. An i dont need more source inputs in the system as the AVR is my main integration unit) 2. Should i look at the same manufacturers power amps/ integrated amp (Yamaha) or pairing it with others (e.g. Emotive X) would be ok? How important is matching and gain control for this? Would i lose out on sonic consistency, quality or output levels? 3. Which would be a good premp/power amp to add considering the recommender rating for speakers for X2Ts is 200 watts and center is 150 watts. The AVR dynamic power for Front L/R channels is at 8/6/4/2 ohms is 135/165/210/280 W respectively. Read somewhere that the AVR actually does 75/80 watts per channel instead of 110 advertised but the Aventage AVRs can push the req. loads when peaks are req.) 4. What would be a good budget option (say around 500$) for the pre-amp/power amp? 5. What would your suggestion be to improve the sound quality & output (considering room treatment, acoustics etc. being same) Suggestions welcome!! Thanks and keep adding more videos!

I agree that setting the volume controls "halfway" does not mean the amplifiers are putting out the same volume. It would seem to me that to make the test valid, you would need to run a level setting tone through the Parasound, and set an output level, say 80 dB, measured by a sound level meter. Then do the same thing with the Denon, and set the volume to the same output level as measured by the meter. Then, with your audio computer, you would compare the graphs of the recorded "Solar Sailer" segments from the Denon vs the Parasound, and look for differences in the traces. If there is no difference, then repeat the test at 90 dB measured output. You will get to a point, I'm sure, where the AVR will run out of power and can't faithfully reproduce the sound clip, in comparison to the more powerful amplifier, and the traces will no longer track together. Then, you can make a conclusion, that the AVR can, or can't, provide a suitable level in your listening environment to meet your requirements, compared to the higher power amplifier. But guys being guys, I'd go for the higher power amp just to be on the safe side! Thanks for the videos.

@TechnoDad
@TechnoDad 6 лет назад
Hi Jamie. If you wanted to start a home theater, then an AVR is the way to go because it has all the decoding for the surround sound. There's no problem in using what you have in a multi-channel stereo format, but you won't get the right sounds coming from the right speakers. If you're worried about speakers not getting enough power with an AVR, that is a valid concern. You could invest in an AVR that has pre-outs and possibly power your front stage (Left, Center, Right). When listening to music, that amplifier will put more power into just the two stereo channels than when it's power 3 or 5 speakers.

Hi! you won't burn speakers with too much power. I think the Marantz power will be fine. You can always upgrade with an amp later on if you wanted to. But I think you will be fine. I just hooked up an Emotiva A-5175 to my Denon 3400H earlier & when I reran Audyssey, it put my left front to -7 & the front right to -5. Isn't that a little low because it sounds softer to me.

There's a problem with the testing methodology. You're going off the display from the pre amp stage, but we don't know how well matched up they are. It also doesn't take the input sensitivity of the pre-amp stage.

I would go with Anthem, ATI or Theta Digital for 5.1 setup. Always go with separates if you can afford it. Receivers always try and fool you with big numbers like 1000 watts. That's 1000 watts peak , not continuous. The first 3 amps I mentioned rate their power in rms. The Atthem P5 ( 5 channel ) power amp is 325 watts rms into each channel, not 325 watts ÷ 5 channels. Once again get separates, power amp and processor. If on a budget or live in a tiny space , go with the receiver.

Most av recievers I've seen will only run like 90 watts rms. My klipsch are 150w rms and 400 Peake. Are there any receivers that will run close to 150w per channel ? Max volume my 90w rms 145w Peake sony strd 5.2 channel won't bairly budge my klipsch r 28f towers lol

Hi Bro is there any difference between An Integrated Amp VS Power Amp ? And Any suggestions in Yamaha also would 3 Channel would be begter for full front Stage or the 5 Channel ?
@TechnoDad
@TechnoDad 6 лет назад
Hi! Integrated means it's a pre-amp and amp in one. They don't call it a receiver because it doesn't have a radio tuner. Power amp will only power what you put into it. What Yamaha are you looking at? It depends on your speakers. My front stage can handle 150 watts RMS and my surrounds can handle 100 watts RMS. A 3 channal can push 250 watts into my front stage, or I can get a 5 channel to push 180 watts into the front stage and surround speakers. It all depends on what you speakers can handle and how comfortable you are overpowering your speakers.

That's exactly what I thought recently since I switch from Onkyo to Denon. I used to use the Onkyo NR646 (350$), it drove my Klipsch Rp280f so well, I was satisfied with it except lacking of some function as playing music via NAS, or quickly connect bluetooth. Since the time I bought Avr Denon x4400h, I figured out that it was not powerful as my one Avr, I usually have to turn up to 60-70% volume on Denon Avr to get the same level volume as my last preference setting on Onkyo NR646 (50%). And for listening to music, I'm currently not satisfied with Denon at all, sometimes it not pass all the low requentcy to my subwoofer, and sometimes the bass is overwhelmed. May be I haven't set it up or calibrated probably, so I'm still playing with the settings.

what about a 2 channel stereo receiver vs amp because I have a av receiver for hometheater pioneer that's says it's 120 watts per channel and I have a Yamaha 2 channel stereo reciver that's 100 watts per channel that's true high power !! it'll rock out way louder than my home theater why i dont pay alot for maps to push my big speakers cause i dont need it bit i have a sansui se9 eq hooked up also in my 2 channel receiver
@TechnoDad
@TechnoDad 6 лет назад
Yeah, a 2 channel stating 100 wpc probably is 100 wpc. When you get into powering multiple channels on an AVR, that's where things get a little shifty.
@tee-jaythestereo-bargainph2120
Techno Dad thank you that's what I needed to know I've asked several guys on their audiophile pages even the Korean guy who has a 100k system , you know it's a lot cheaper to have a 2 channel reciver to use for music and a a/v receiver for movies right? using an amp wouldn't you have way more power on your fronts even during movies or can you level it out ? those amps are so expensive I like the new marantz integrated amp rays big power right?
@TechnoDad
@TechnoDad 6 лет назад
Great question! The AVR will balance out your speakers, so you won't need to worry. I like multi-channel amps. Like a 5 channel amp for your main 5.1 speakers. Then let the AVR power your surround backs and height channels if you have them. When powering 5 channels I know the Parasound A52+ will send 180 wpc into 8 ohms, and when you're only using 2 channels for stereo listening, it's pushing out 225 wpc into 8 ohms.

I look at the wattage of the power supply of said amplifier or AVR before the questionable watts per channel ratings. It will never output more than the rated power of the power supply. Whatever the manufacturer quotes for watts per channel with whatever conditions they used to define that rating can't violate that rule. Measurements are fine but how do we know how linear each device in you test set was? Does setting them to the half way mark represent 50% of the power supply's rated output for both units under test? Want to know how powerful an amp or AVR....start with the power supply rating then look at watts per channel and the way the manufacturer defined watts per channel.
@TechnoDad
@TechnoDad 5 лет назад
Good call! I think a better test is to setup the AVR at 75% volume and record something, then connect a power amp to the AVR so it's using the AVR's pre amp section and then record the same track. I think that would be a better comparison.
@ruifaias4058
@ruifaias4058 6 лет назад
hey! you did it the wrong way. you are just measuring output level at a given volume knob position. the correct way is to level bouth amp at the same output, lets say 88db. then you need to measure distortion and power output at the same load. this is not a easy task to do, but it will give more real results. edited: to do the test the right way you should find a oscilloscope, put some heavy duty 8ohm dummy loads on the amp them feed the amp with a sine wave at 1khz. crank the volume up until you find distortion on the oscilloscope, measure the voltage output and do the maths. this is the correct way to measure output power on amplifiers. you said, you need to double the watts to acheive 3 db at given speaker sensivity. so reversing the math and assuming the parassound, the loudest, was running at +-80w the denon was outputting +-10w.... this is fairly low. the only conclusion you can take from this test is that the volume knob position isn't a accurate way to measure power output

Hi Greg, it really depends on what you are looking to do and what your budget is. If you want a home theater sound you're going to have to go AVR or Pre/Pro and AMP. Some of those pre/pros are super expensive though. I have been recommending for an 11 channel atmos setup, people get an AVR that can process 11 channels, but only power 9 channels and adding a 5 channel amp to that. It's cheaper than buying an AVR that can process and power 11 channels. Email me if you need in depth advice: technodad55 at gmail.

I would like to see you investigate into how Audyssey tunes setups with a low power AVR bias. Audyssey assumes that you are powering speaker with the AVR so that even if you do add a power amp, Audyssey still sends as much of the power frequencies as possible to the sub-woofer. After redoing my setup with external amps, I had to modify all the settings manually. Otherwise Audyssey would just ignore the power available and still send way too much to the sub-woofer making the external amps and full range speakers near useless.
@TechnoDad

I installed an Emotiva XPA-5 three years ago to power my speakers. Although the Pioneer AVR I had actually delivered most of the advertised power I still felt like I was missing out. Man, what a difference it made! The dynamic headroom makes all the difference! An AVR just cant deliver the same dynamics... period. Although in most situations most listeners MAY not notice the difference, the difference IS quantifiable! Since my AVR had pre-out's (An absolute MUST). I had the opportunity to do a side by side comparison. The Emotiva rated at 200 Watts per channel ( ALL Channels Driven!) EASILY beat the output power of the reciever's rated output (110 Watts per channel) as expected. I will never go back to just relying on an AVR to give my speakers what they demand!

Hi Techno Dad, I don't want to hate on your video, but I have to agree with one of the commenters below. As soon as you said you set them both to 50% volume, I was like how is this going to be a fair test? They are products from different manufacturers and we have no idea what 50% volume on one device correlates to 50% on the other device. I think your video can be misinformative and swaying people away from a product on bad conclusions. I'm not saying that the Denon isn't less powerful, it might be, but it could also be that the Denon chooses to push out 10 Watts at 50% volume and the Amp chooses 40 Watts. I think a fairer test would be to drive them both up to the same db level regardless of volume indicator, and measure their wattage output, and then keep driving them up until they start to distort. And see what the output of each is then. I dunno, there might be better tests as well. Just think the one you did is unfair.
@TechnoDad
@TechnoDad 6 лет назад
Yeah, I get what you're saying. I've been talking to Emotiva about getting a 5 channel amp. Once I get that, I'll do something like the Denon at 50% and then attach the Emotiva and keep the volume at 50% and see if there is a difference in volume. I think that might be a better comparison.

I need your help. I am trying to figure it out for 2 weeks now. I have an LG home theater 5.1 channel that i have loved for 6 years until the receiver gave up. I had set it up to my LED TV before via Head set input to AUX in of the home theater through AUX mode. So everything the TV plays, goes out to the 5 speakers and subwoofer. Since my home theater receiver is no longer working, I am trying to purchase an amplifier that matches these speakers to do exactly the same set up (headset input to aux in). But I am having a hard time matching my speakers to the AMP. Especially, taking note of the Watts and Ohms which i believe critical. I have 5 speakers 141 Watts @ 3 ohms at 1kHz w/ 282 Watts Max input each plus a passive subwoofer 145 Watts @ 3 ohms 60 Hz w/ 290 Watts max input. The total wattages of all the components is 850 RMS. Please help me find the right Amplifier wattage for my speakers. This is for home use only. I use maximum of 70-80% volume only which is already way to loud for my taste. I love loud bass music. I saw Amp that states 500 watt x 2 which i don't understand if this is per channel or total. Also, most of the Amplifier Ohms i see is 4ohms and above. My speakers are 3 ohms. Are these ok? Please englighten me. I just want to use these speakers and subwoofer for the same set up.
@TechnoDad
@TechnoDad 6 лет назад
Okay Raymond, to keep your speakers you'll need an AVR that's stable under 4 ohms and that's going to be a problem. Maybe if you can find a power amp that is stable at 2 ohms and you get an AVR with pre-outs to connect an external amp. That would be my best advise for your situation.
@raymondfrancisco813
@raymondfrancisco813 6 лет назад
Make sense. Most in market ranges 4 up. Hardly you can find under that nowadays except, for cases in home theaters like LG and Samsung. Maybe for marketing purposes. So you end up buying a new set again. Some people say 1 ohm over the a speaker would technically work and would be ok as long as you don't push the volume to 100%. Like i said i only use maximum of 80% if there is a little gathering at home. But most of the time 30-50% movies or music. Do you think it will work? What's your opinion about this? Thanks

Just a Q. after learning how big to go with sub woofer by cubic feet, I got 2 HSU 12". Do you think Onkyo 830,or 820 is good match with the monolith 7 x 200 for movies? Thinking this may be my next purchase I can get the 830 at Gibby's at $499. It was a$1500 AVR last year. I just subscribed! Cheers from Canada 😁

Not a valid test. Volume knob position doesn't correlate to power output or gain.

Sure, I’m going to do a new test but using the theater bypass so it uses the amps on the Integrated but none of the pre-amp section. So all that will be coming from the AVR, including the volume

Receivers today have more than enough power for any size room. No matter what you're told, amplifiers are a waste of money. There is no difference in sound clarity. What you hear is all in your imagination. Reading the other comments, others have also bought into the scam. Only reason for an amplifier is that it looks fancy on a gear rack.

I agree that it is time for manufacturers to start telling us what we really get instead of these fantasy numbers. It would take some time though for people to understand why all of a sudden the amps that were putting out 140 watt/channel now only puts out 60-70 watts/channel. People want to be deceived. They want to be able to say my receiver puts out so and so many watts.

Hi Martin! I totally get what you're saying. I'm not sure why they don't tell us a number for all channels driven. That would just make sense.

Great video , but I guess right ? These speakers love power ! I also want to thank you for your advice on my selection my set up sounds amazing! Playing vinyl or listening to music from RU-vid, I haven't put on a CD yet . And the movies are insane thx for the Dolby atmos demo. The only thing when doing the demo I don't get no sound threw the atoms speakers but when I put the movie demo I get the sound threw them weird.

Techno Dad will double check all my settings, a lot of I have to keep up with as far making sure I have everything set up properly. I just Youthmans video on the audyssey mix up with crossovers , I checked my av it was at 60 for the main and 120 for the atmos. Don't even know what that means bit I'm learning day by day believe me.
