A Very Muddy and Epic Bike Packing Adventure. "The Fosbury Loop". Planet X Bootzipper, Wiltshire Man

Early April and the weather is just starting to warm a little but on this adventure it still felt like Winter.
I planned a rout using Komoot that I called "The Fosbury loop" : www.komoot.com/tour/1505511450
The ride is around 60 miles and can comfortably be done in less than 2 days. Good fitness and bike handling are a must as the ride takes in some pretty steep hills and fast single tracks. Best to pack light for this one!
My bike for this adventure was the PlanetX Bootzipper which is a hard tail mountain bike, ideal for the rough and muddy terrain, it's steel frame is strong and can take the shocks and loads. I added a suspension seat post which cushioned me from most of the rough terrain.
Navigation was via my Garmin Edge explore 2
Tent was a Terra nova laser competion
Stove was a Click stand with Ti pot and trangia burner

That was a very interesting adventure for the viewers of this video but a very challenging and difficult trek for you Sandy. The weather and road conditions were definitely not very pleasant for a bike ride and camp, that is for certain. You are one determined and resilient man my friend. I hope that you managed to get worthy enjoyment from this "adventure." Thank you for sharing your time with us my friend and I will surely see you on the next one.

I have ridden along the muddy canal banks and with the ruts have nearly ended up taking 'dip'. I always had mudguards as I couldn't stand the mud and water soaking all my gear and clothes. You certainly lap up the harsh conditions to entertain Sandy. Best wishes.😊👍

Great video Sandy. You certainly know how to suffer😊 I think you will find cleats a real pain in the butt for your kind of touring. I suggest old school rat trap cages, without the straps. Stops you feet slipping and no need for special fittings on your cycling shoes. Try them and good luck with your coming journeys

Yes we have had such awful weather this year - our village is flooded and long lines of tankers are being used to ship water out from the flooded sewers . A very good point about the combustion engine v the bike . The water contamination is a challenge- if you boil water it dies not remove toxins - it just kills bacteria etc - sometimes it’s better to stop and buy food from shops along the way like at Hungerfird - it serves to minimise storage and ensure you get clean water ?

Ace loop Sandy .... Really you have a pretty fine bike there which technically would fall in the "gravel" category being fully rigid ... if you want it to roll faster in the summer months all you really need to do is change your tyres ... of course one should always get a new bike whenever possible by law but honestly if I had the funds I'd have a Bootzipper at the drop of a hat ... steel is real and all that .... honestly it's a real trailblazer ... as for cleats if they suit you then there are pedals with them incorporated giving you both options at all times ... for me personally you can't beat DMR V8s or V12s but then I'm way too chicken to be attached to the bike offroad 😁.... yet another inspiring video though chap and some wonderful country there ... cheers 🙂

The Bootzipper is an Ace bike, certainly would work as an only bike but is a bit heavy (designed for round the world tours and carrying heavy loads) but will be my goto bike for when the going and weather is really bad but got a light weight purpose build gravel in Titanium on order that will be my new goto bike for finer weather and finer rides. It wasn't quite so cold on this ride Nasir as I didn't need to wear any gloves but the weather was still character building shall we say:)

Great video, thanks. If you are thinking of getting cleats, my suggestion would be Shimano 324's. they are reversible, cleat on one side and normal pedal on the other.

That was a real endurance test, Sandy, for both you and the bike! Beautiful route to tackle in the summer when it's warm and dry . . . . assuming we get a summer this year.

Hahaa, Steve the weather sure is acting strange at the moment, still looks a lot like Winter. My money is on the warm weather starting very soon though so don't worry. I have a spare trail camera here that you can have, I'll bring it over on the next camp at your place:)

You've got no idea what an inspiration your videos are to me buddy. Despite the wind and rain, you still got out there and as tough as it was, you still made the very best of it. And that dawn chorus...nothing like it. Jack Hargreaves...Man About Town...loved watching his shows on tv as a kid. I'm not sure about what he said there...I think everything has it's place. Must admit...driving a horse is fun though and bike packing is a godsend. What a lovely greeting to come home to. I was at the farm for 9 days and the winds and rain were ferocious...with 2 mares in foal and due to drop within 2 weeks from when I arrived. I wasn't silly...as soon as the rain stopped, I sent the drone up, rather than get stuck, or even worse fall. From treating ducks, geese and chickens to scrap bread, to turning 39 goose eggs and 19 ducks half a turn daily in the incubators...plus the 4 dogs and 2 cats...as much fun as it was, I'm glad to be home again and the dry weather will soon be here for a few nights out locally. ATB and thanks again for sharing this one 👍

Sounds like you've had a lovely time on the farm Steve. Nothing better than being close to nature and animals :)

Well done Sandy! Great effort there for our benefit, I remember Combe Gibbet from some years ago.

It's a nice place to be gibbetted, I hope the two who were gibbeted there in the past were thankful for the views:)

I curtailed my bike trip last weekend, the wind was dangerously strong in my view. Heading straight into 50mph gusts in the pennines. nah. The mud on your route looked grim, I enjoyed your video and picked up a couple of tips. Thank you.
