I've been clean from meth for 8 years now. Was homeless for 18 months at one point. I work as a boiler operator for an aerospace company now. Just picked up a new road bike 3 weeks ago. Absolutely love cycling!
It’s easy to say you swapped one addiction for another addiction, and beat yourself up , but maybe look at it as you’ve swapped one bad habit for a great habit . If something makes you happy and leaves you fitter , it can’t be bad for you as long as other parts of your life doesn’t suffer for it (job, relationship etc). You’ve created a RU-vid channel out of it . Beer wasn’t going to give you that !!! Cycling has been a huge benefit for you . See it as a blessing . It’s not an addiction. ❤
Amazing… we all need a bit of help with motivation sometimes! I always like to set myself achievable goals to help with keeping my determination up! 😁👍
Man you are so right about addiction, I lost my wife to alcohol, I'm now trying to avoid alcohol & concentrate on cycling, adding weight training to stay strong later in life. On another note - I have no tattoos at all but your work is true art, keep it going we're all behind you.
I wouldn't beat yourself up if you have a day off from exercising, as long as you have done what you consider enough through out the rest of the week😀 As long as you are making progress and it's all going in the right direction, that's fine, so take a day off and just chill now and again😊👍
I know you said you hate running, but where you are I'd definitely recommend scrambling over running distances. It offers much more freedom than cycling and you can see some amazing views too.
I prefer long walks for that… just really not a fan of running. I will force myself to do it occasionally though… mainly when my partner wants to run! 😁👍
Habits and routine are your friends if you can - 10-15mins ‘home gym’ (sit ups and dumbbells) every morning and every night and run or cycling 5 days a week …. Not hours and hours - but something - all adds up
So funny and true, no matter where you are with fitness, you always want to be better. I'd love to hit your numbers now!!! Need to get on it, great motivation 💪
I usually dislike to even spend time in the comment sections of youtube for obvious reasons but i had to comment on this after you said you want to do SOME sort of physical activity every day. Since you have a dog and you have to walk that dog every day, i can TOTALLY recommend rucking to you. Its the most convinient form of whole body strengh and endurance excersise there is. Ive been doing it for many years now and its become my go to because its just so convinient and so multifunctional. Basically just load up a backpack as ergonomically as possible (means; the weights should be as close to your back and and as far up as possible) with some weights (start slow, and never go above 30% of your total bodyweight) and start walking. It increases balance, endurance (its low impact on your joints), it increases bone density, trains literally every muscle from neck to toe and all you have to do is do what you have to do anyway, and thats walking! Additionally, what i do is, when i ruck i add some bodyweight excersieses like squats, lunges, suitcase carries and push ups (or other excersises like shoulder carries, bear hugs and so on) to my walk and it becomes the most convinient and functional workout you can do when walking a dog (id also argue, its the most functional and primal form of excerise there is). I feel like a tank ever since i started rucking because of the stability and the bone density increase. Recently i had a bike crash where i crashed with my entire left side at some speed between 30-40kmh against the pavement and i didnt break a single bone. That just speaks for itself. You go glen coco, im sure you got a backpack at home and some water bottles or books or dumbell weights. And you have zero excuses to not do it because you have to walk your dog anyway, so no chance of postponing.
Bro, i’m half french/portuguese on my blood and your videos… I want to leave and go live in Portugal, espacially with the insecurity and stuff here, god bless you and your beautiful trio with Wifey and Daisyyyy 🐶 🫶🏻
Great channel. I think give what you reflect on with your addiction history, your greatest challenge would be to get comfortable with not doing anything for a day or two. For you, the need to DO something is the biggest habit to break. Good luck 🤞🏻
In 2018 I recorded something on Strava every day… by the end of the first month… the tally 31/365 became a habit I didn’t want to break and even went on the turbo trainer in the Keller at 11pm after a business trip, just to keep it going… I really cut down on alcohol (an alkoholfrei bier is only 15calories) and ate salads everyday… but I agree with you that is only part of it… I was also going to gym 3x per week and a club ride of ~85km on the weekends… I lost 20 kg over that year… 5 years later, I have put most of that back on, but food and drink habits are the same. I need to get back to the “doing something” everyday as you said at ~7’50”.
1283 days, well done man you have actually my inspiration to make 1000 days without a drink, about a 1/3 of the way there and feeling awesome because of it
Well done on the "dry" phase Thomas. Used to think Amy Winehouse's "Rehab" was a "rebellious" "lively number" ! It's not until you closely read the lyrics ! :( Ask Pasta de Maria's if they do wholegrain pasta ! :) No need for a stuffy room full of "Gymtimidation", you're in a sunshine zone, outdoor press-ups, few dips, few pull-ups on the monkey bar in the back garden, sorted :) 💪
Looking forward to seeing Cycle In Paradise progress and hope that Dave and I can get out there to see you both at some point in the not too distant future!!
Quit drinking 5 years ago can fully relate dude ❤ man your wiked on the BMX.. I used to ride bmx to back in the 80s and 90s.. street and some freestyle.. Pete 🚴🏻😊👍💪🚴♀️
I took up cycling after giving up a 20 a day, 20 year smoking habit and it’s changed my life. I completely identify with your desire to do something every day, I have a 20 minute RU-vid workout playlist that I use for those really busy days when time is hard to come by and that works really well. Oh, and I hated running too but once I ditched music for audiobooks my opinion completely changed, Cav’s autobiography narrated by the man himself was quite inspirational!
Well done on exercise every day this week! Love Portugal been there 3-4 times and seen lots of the place. Would love to come cycling in Portugal but a long way to come as 20 years ago I moved from good old England to New Zealand, road biking, gravel biking, mountain biking and running here but still my favourite is road biking.
Fitness will come but don't forget to improve your mindset. Surround yourself with like minded people and don't be frightened to say no and don't worry about what people think.
@@TheCyclingTattooist Hi Thomas. Sorry for the late reply. Back in our place in fuerteventura and although always hot today is a CRIPPLER. Wrecked on the MTBS. No ice but very cold water soak in the bath. Bliss. When i said don't be frightened to say no it's probably no what you think. We like in a funny world where many people are desperate to fit in and be liked. Many think they're in the wrong for saying no. Many wont say no in case it upsets someone. We now live in a world where feelings come before facts. If you don't like something then say no. Many simply go with the flow simply to please others whilst leaving themselves disgruntled. Shame we tend to adopt these ways when we're older. Hope all is well dude and press on. PS.. Move over here. EVERYONE IS FULLY TATTED UP. Seriously, necks head, legs n arms. Never seen so many.
Great episode as always, one I can really relate to as I need to crank up my fitness and watching your video has really motivated me. I cycled to work this morning and will give it my best to stay active everyday but the weather in the UK sucks at the moment and I’m sick of keep putting the mudguards on!!!!
Always love your videos. Great energy & Portugal looks wow. The piece you tattooed was amazing. Talented man. My enthusiasm for the bike comes & goes. Mixing it up is a good idea. Living where you do swimming would be good. Don't k ow if that's your thing? Anyway...thanks for sharing ❤️🏴
Love that new local loop, and congrats on beating your previous time! And good luck with the fitness plan. BTW, have you tried rucking? It could be combined with dog walking, burns twice the calories of regular walking, and also helps to build strength in your legs, core, shoulders, and back.
Hey dude I would love to see a video on your whole set up, I'm a bit of a noob when it comes to bikes.. I've just been rolling on my Sirrus X 2.0 for the past few years. I know I need to transition to a road bike but haven't a clue on what to look for and why! Hoping you can show your thoughts on components and list some pros / cons perhaps. Love from the UK !
My honest advice is that most bikes these days are very much the same… personally I think the most important thing is to buy a bike that suits your budget and that makes you happy. Unless you’re looking to become pro the marginal differences in bikes these days really doesn’t matter… just get out there and enjoy yourself 😁👍
Mate! Take up surfing… look where you’re living!! Forget sharks…the hungry ones are down in Africa and Australia. It’s fun, great upper body and cardio workout, and did I say FUN??
you've moved to paradise but you don't have your social ride groups you used to ride with in the uk, so not as easy to stay motivated. There's no use riding for no reason, yes we have health and fitness to consider beyond that I'd say you need to target a few fondo events (so close to you alps, dolomites) aiming ultimately for the marmotte etc, that will also provide you with great cycling content as there's only so much solo riding videos you can do - people watch to be motivated or entertained I think that needs to be interwoven with some goals. Put up some plan ideas see what your audience thinks. Just a suggestion.
Never use extendable leash for your dog! It looks very "comfortable" but in reality may end up very bad for the dog walker. In particular with the larger and heavier dog. My friend's mother had accident, while walking her dog. She was releasing a leash, when it finally it stopped and her arm got dislocated and she was taken to hospital. It took her over a year to recover.
Yes I would agree… BUT Daisy is a very well trained dog and doesn’t pull me around all over the show! 👍 And I don’t know if you was watching… but my Mrs is a dog trainer, think I’ve got the training advice covered! 😉
