Welcome to I’ll Knit (& Spin!) If I want To! I asked y’all to send in some of your questions (from everything from fiber arts, to designing and on!) so I could put together a little video for y’all, and today is even better because we have Jillian to answer your spinning questions!!
Questions Answered:
1. Singles thickness! How do I know how thick to make my singles so I can end up with the yarn weight I want? For example - I want a 3 ply sock yarn.
2. I’m a newer spinner and I often find that my finished yarn ends up being a little thicker than my plyback samples. I try to spin my singles consistently and ply to match the plyback but after I've finished the yarn, I find that instead of the sport weight I'm expecting, I've got dk or instead of dk, I've got heavy worsted. Any pointers on avoiding these surprises, or should I just assume I'm going to get a heavier yarn than the plyback and plan for it? Thanks so much!
3. My yarn keeps breaking as I try to spin, then when I pull yarn from the bobbin back thru the orifice to reattach my fiber, it breaks again! Argh! Any advice on what I might be doing wrong?
4. Do I really need to use different size whorls?
5. If you could give newbie-Jillian one piece of spinning advice what would it be?
6. What technical spinning know-how do you consider a must?
7. What is one thing I could do to become a more consistent spinner? I am about 3 years in and my default yarn is pretty consistent. But I find myself shying away from trying anything new because I am afraid I will "waste my fiber" on an awful inconsistent practice spin. I'd like to feel more confident in trying out different thicknesses of yarn or drafting methods!
8. Should I let my singles rest before plying? Can I let them rest for too long? Sometimes I will get distracted by a new spinning or knitting project and my singles might sit for half a year before being plied. Is that bad?
