Old toolmaker, of all the machines I have used my favourite has alway been the lathe. Fortunately I still have the tiny laptop lathe that I purchased when I was 21 at a UK hobby show. And so I keep on turning.

Damn. Really wasn't able to appreciate the size of it until the photos. Pretty cool machine. Cutting edge and Abom are indeed great channels for engineering and machining. If you enjoy smaller scale work and a some humor I'd recommend This Old Tony as well.

I did my indentured Engineering apprenticeship at Baguley Drewry Ltd in Burton on Trent England , Industrial locomotive , David Brown gear box and worm reduction box manufacturers and general engineering. We had an even in 1984 a very old Craven grinding machine specifically designed to grind the hardened worm of a worm shaft . It was all mechanical and the correct pitch of the various worm shafts was achieved all through calculations to determine the correct back gears to be used . The large grinding wheel and head were also angled over to suit specific worm shafts . At the push of a lever the large grinding head and wheel would move forward rapidly whilst the worm shaft was rotating it would also start traversing along and you prayed to god that the gear calculations were correct or else there was one very scrapped , very expensive worm shaft , one Big Bang and potentially a large grinding wheel acting as shrapnel as it exploded . I was 17-18 years old at the time , I wasn’t given the job to set it up just learn and actually operate the machine . Even to this day It was the scariest machine I have ever operated and with the sad closure of Baguleys in 1984 I set my own small Engineering machine shop up having just turned 22 years old , I am now in my 39th year trading through good times and some really difficult times . To this day , that machine still scares the s**t out of me 😂🇬🇧🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

Very interesting seeing one of these older lathes in action. I helped rebuild a large lathe at Siemens that was 80 feet between centers. Sorry, I cannot remember the OEM.

yes, that lathe is a monster beautiful old machine you don't get to see them that big that often but in the case of craven laths that is a small one. still pretty cool to see nice one

I thought I spotted Guy Martin while browsing your video library. Isle of Man TT is the greatest show on earth imo.

It’s cool to see how many of those craven lathes are still in use. One at my work is the same size I think and it’s had a cnc retrofit.

Hi there, just a quick one about the Craven lathe, the factory was in Stockport Cheshire, reddish,. My aunt Mary worked there for years, think it was in the forties, she retired from there. The factory has gone now many years ago, it brought good memories back, than k you for showing it

I've been watching machiing channels for over a year now. One year on, not far off making my own swarf now. Nearly dropped a lathe bed on me foot yesterday. Good job I can dance ! (I can't dance - but I got close)

My first year out of college, I had a teaching job in Tell City, IN which is on the Ohio River. A lot of barge traffic on the river. There was a co. near there that built/rebuilt barges and river tow boats. The tow boats had either a 9" or 12" dia. prop shaft with lengths of 40-65 feet. They had lathes to turn and thread those. The operators road a chair up on the carriage. The "throw diameters" were 2' and 4' respectively. When a tow boat stuck the propeller in a sandbar/rocks it would shear the prop shaft like a knife thru butter. For some reason repair welding was not an option.

Thought Brian Block's 48" x 24' Monarch was a big lathe! Those cone crushers are keeping you busy. 👍

Great to see them still on use. Look after it well and it should last another 100 years. There's bigger in J Mullins engineering in Tuam Galway. Four meters swing and fifty feet between centres. I think he has two of them.

We have a pair of Craven's at my work used for roughing out cranks in Lincolnshire. Lovely old girls some one has centre punched their initials and July 1953 into one of those brass windows on one.

There's an old Craven lathe near here (NE England) that came from Consett Steel Works. It was the works wheel lathe for their railway rolling stock. It was rescued by a preserved railway not too far away. Like yourself I've tried to get it into one photo but the room is tight with it in and it's so big!

Lol I wonder if Guy knows that a solid steel 1000kg drum for a motorcycle Dyno was made in that building possibly in that lathe about 18 year's ago. And that Dyno was used to tune the bikes of his competitor's at the IOM TT and may have been faster than him (S Harris lap record on a 600 cc I think was faster one year)😉

Your place did some turning work for a project a few years ago. We had ran out of capacity so you guys and curries were used. Did you ever get s chance to see the big giddings and Lewis VTL? Was running an 88inch table on it from memory.it was at stockham
