I think it’s funny that people bring up how “Anime” Tekken is now when even the first game had anime influences in it’s character design. Maybe not as much, but it also maybe had a third of the cast of Tekken 7
I'll be real with you here Tekken has always had anime and movie references throughout its entire lifespan as a series Like seriously, the amount of references to JoJo's bizarre adventure and other classic movies are absolutely insane
Tekken 1 and 2 was its own vibe. Morally grey story where no one who actually stood a chance of winning was a good guy, wacky but extremely catchy OST, strict conventions around the 1P arcade mode, mirror matches and endings, but they just had to have an anime protagonist and Jin came in like a wrecking ball in T3 and set things on a dark path. You smoke some Jin Kazama out behind the school building once and the next thing you know you've got kawaii robots with chainsaw arms, the prime minister of Poland and tracking hellsweep.
I've only experienced Tekken 1 once or twice, an this being after experiencing Tekken 2 and 3... let's just say that seeing how the series started with Tekken 1 was a bit of a shock. 0:24 - Can you really call Lars a Naruto reject when he did actually get into Naruto? Also, those are some adorable chibis. 3:58 - Going to be hard for Namco to get Seiichi Ishii to work on Tekken after throwing him off a cliff. Impressive how me managed to direct Tekken 2 after that. An once again, despite not being nearly as well remembered these days within the Western market, it's funny how things keep coming back to Virtua Fighter. 6:17 - Yeah, I do recall it being extremely difficult when I played it. As a kid, I had managed to beat Tekken 2's arcade with all the characters. Tekken 1 had me stuck on Round 7 for absolutely ages. It's also funny how a demon who can shoot laser beams was somehow to beat than a slightly younger Heihachi.
Man, they REALLY retconned the story of T1 with T7. Specially the "Kazuya make a deal with the devil" part. Although, if you ask me which one is better (pre-retcon or post-retcon) I'd pick T7. It's still kinda bullshit but less bullshit then T1. Which one do you prefer?
Hmm, I don't really have a preference to be honest. Tekken's plot has gotten increasingly demented over time, so I can't take it seriously enough to care about it as much as I used to. However, if I had to pick one, I'd go with T7
Tekken 3 was my first tekken game later I played tekken 1 arcade version on tekken 5 and PS1 version on PlayStation 3 stor for me it's average game compared to tekken 3
I'm still playing Tekken 1. The unlocking of characters was always an absolute highlight of the old games. I was puzzled when this feature was removed. Tekken 1 and 2 are associated with so many childhood memories for me... and I believe it's a great way to learn the game as well. It can be frustrating at times, but the masochist in me enjoys it.
Thanks for commenting, I really enjoyed reading what you had to say! It's a shame that unlocking characters has disappeared, but I think it's because it's more convenient for tournament organisers if every character is unlocked from the get go. Old school fighting games had so many hidden secrets and challenges, and you felt like the coolest person in the world when you found one!
