The reign of Queen Victoria from 1839 to 1901 saw unprecedented political, social, military, and technological changes. It also marked the greatest transformation in the way Britons and Americans celebrated Christmas. In addition to rooms decorated with nativities, Santas, and Christmas cards from the era, this year’s Christmas displays will honor Victoria and Albert’s nine children by displaying eight decorated trees from differing time periods of the Victorian era and one very large Christmas Pyramid -- a German custom seldom seen in America. Visitors will also get a glimpse of what men and women may have worn to celebrate the holidays through the incorporation of costumes from the Paramount Pictures Archive, selected by Randall Thropp to showcase Victorian style.

My mother has one glass ornament that has been passed down from my family since the Victorian era. I remember many more as a kid, but they weren’t as protected as this particular one. I never really took an interest in it but now I have to do some research. Thank you for sharing your precious collection I would love to visit in person one day. Merry Christmas 🎁🎄

I’m fascinated by the Victorian era and fascinated with royalty in general although I’m not a royalist. Queen Victoria and Prince Albert really were the perfect love story. I know she moved his desk into the room where she had hers and did her royal duties from, giving him respect by doing so. I can see how she loved him because he was so knowledgeable and forward thinking. I am at the moment reading Queen Mary’s dolls house which is incredible, every item being made by the skilled workers of the day, for instance the miniature furniture made by furniture craftsmanship, the carpet sweeper and garden tools made by the iron mongers of the day etc. This was a lovely insight into a Victorian Christmas. Thank you.

I have seen tinsil made out of lead. When I was an archivist and we would process office paperwork many of the christmas cards up to the time following WWII would have black on them. This was not indicating death or mourning but the silver used on the card tarnishing.

First originals , then not christmas related trees but tied with winter solstice, had decorations made from straws and red yarn, what was/is our very old tradition what comes from time before christmas was even a thing. First public Christmas tree in history was put up in Tallinn / what was very important port and trading town then / and yes it was decorated with edible gifts / apples and cookies/ for town poor people. Later was used more items like nuts and berries too. From that it very quickly spread to all over the world. To have evergreen tree decorated for winter solstice is our very very old tradition what goes back to maybe before AD, it was just taken over and started use in religious context. Anyway outcome was not bad, nowdays it has got nearly back its old meaning - to bring hapiness and hope to people in darkest time of year.

HOW can a cardboard building safely have a lit candle in it?? The trees are scary enough, but this seems like a recipe for holiday disaster.

The German candle houses are indeed rare. How many went up in flames is hard to say. However, Trees and other candle-lit items were not lit and left alone as we currently do with electric lights. They were usually carefully watched and enjoyed for a while and then blown out.

This is really nice. I wish the camera work included lots more close-ups.

would even look better if the rooms had actual Victorian interiors. The colour scheme is totally off and bears little to non resemblance to victorian interiors.

Not my home. It is a house/museum on the historic register 1830-40's not Victorian. I've created Christmas displays dating from 1840s- 1970s. This year just happened to be Victorian.

Nice collection, however, (29:06) Queen Victoria and Prince Albert celebrated every Christmas as Windsor Castle until Prince Albert passed and then she spent it on the Isle of Wight. It would have been nice if the camera got more close ups and not so much of the host (no offense but I didn't come to see him)
