A Virtual Tour of an Abandoned St Thomas Psychiatric Hospital
Over the years Freaktography and RiddimRyder have explored this old abandoned psychiatric hospital dozens and dozens of times, we even put up hammocks in the forensics unit and spent the night in 2017.

On my very first urban exploration of the Abandoned St Thomas Psychiatric Hospital in 2014 we just got lucky, we found an open door and the access to the tunnels was unlocked, so I would explore a few buildings until we ran into Stan, the maintenance guy who sporadically comes by to check on things.
Following this initial visit that was cut short and knowing now what Stan the Maintenance Man told me, RiddimRyder and I returned to St Thomas, Ontario not long after and we managed to make our way inside and explore as much as we possibly could with the few hours that we had. We would explore the tunnel system, the forensics unit, the morgue and autopsy room, many of the various wings and pavilions, all with much success.
Fast forward two weeks and RiddimRyder and I are on site and ready for a full day of exploring, we make our way to one of our pre-set entry points….it’s locked.
We walk the perimeter looking for any open doors or windows and come up with nothing, they’re onto us and they’ve sealed off the entire facility.
By the end of 2014, we had managed to explore almost all of the abandoned asylums buildings.
So now it’s 2015 and I have been by a few times to find no access to the facility, not one to break windows or force my way in, I leave and hope for another day that Stan the Maintenance Man will have forgotten to lock that door!
The 4 pavilions at the back of the property were fenced off, closed many years before the closure of the rest of the facility and had been blocked off from the inside, fenced off from the outside all doors were locked or windows well boarded up. But from the outside, looking in the windows you just knew that these buildings were good, they had been sealed off with no heat, no power, no temperature control for many many years…..they have to open up at some point!
Later in 2015 Finz519, RiddimRyder and I discovered that a lower window in a door had been at some point kicked in on one of the back pavilions that were sealed off so we now had the opportunity to explore these two buildings, and just our luck we could also get into the main facility that day.
The damage and decay inside was amazing, the other side of the facility was still in such great shape with no decay or damage, so to see this side, which looks JUST like the other side, only with decay was a very cool experience. It was like stepping into a time warp and made for some excellent abandoned videos for the Freaktography RU-vid Channel.
The maintenance team here are on the ball and they are pretty quick to close up any holes, broken windows, open doors etc, so access is always for a very short period of time, so the access to these two buildings had been closed when we went by, so we would have to wait for another chance.
I would not visit at all in 2016 but in 2017 I would stop by once for a solo explore just for the hell of it and then again in December 2017 for an overnight of exploring with Freaktography, RiddimRyder and Carlo Paolozza
I wanted to see the whole place, in the summer of 2018 I drove through and found that finally, someone had kicked in another window and maintenance had not yet spotted it! I finally had my chance to explore the last two buildings of this old psychiatric hospital.
It was just as incredible as I imagined it would be, the decay, the destruction, the damage! To make things even more interesting, in the one pavilion is where they held the staff daycare centre so the walls were covered with chalk drawings, tiny palm prints and more. At the time, I was certain that I was in the children’s ward but some former staff members advised me after the fact that this was the staff child care centre.
It still makes for some incredibly creepy and interesting photo opportunities!

This is really neat to see all these years later. I was placed here by the Children's Aid Society when I was a minor and they told me that nobody would take me at foster homes because I was dangerous. I stayed for a real short stay before being transferred to London Psych where they had two youth wards. I still remember the basement corridors. And I am not sure if I made it up or not, but there was a canteen where you could buy cigarettes (not me, I was too young) and different food items. I am surprised I survived my youth. When I was kicked out of London Psych., the CAS refused to provide transportation for me to the city I was from. I called some older men who I had met in St Thomas and ended up in some strange places until they helped me get home and into a shelter. I am so very grateful that nothing happened to me.

@@Freaktography Life is so much better :) It only took a few decades to sort myself out lol I watched the LPH video too. I remember being in the common spaces on the youth ward. The layout was visually familiar. I have just received documents following a FOI request to learn about my past. It surely will set me on an emotional journey. There is simply too much trauma that my brain has resolved to dispose of all of my childhood memory.

I worked there as a kitchen porter in 1975-76. We used the tunnels to deliver the heated meal-wagons to each ward. I knew every inch of the place like the back of my hand. The mens and women’s criminally insane wards, and the geriatric wards were the freakiest! The craziest room, by far, was the old electro-shock room which was used simply to store paper products for kitchen use. All the old dials and wires snd meters were still in place in it, as well as the “chair” for the patient (kinda looked like a dentists chair) This place was creepy even when there were 2200 patients and 1000 staff running around in it! I can’t imagine how creepy it must be now! Super freaky memories for me! I’m watching from my retirement house in Winfield BC! But I feel like I’m walking those halls in my kitchen whites, with my big ring of ward keys jangling in my belt, just like it’s 1975! Peace

@cherrypickerguitars

@@BeefyZawg it’s still there! Awaiting epic adventures of the truly paranormal kind! I live near Kelowna BC now, but as recently as the summer of 2021, that psych hospital still stood! It’s massive! All brick, stone and concrete. It’ll take ages, even to demolish it. Sooo many deaths there - and curious ones, too. Also, it’s history as a aviation training facility in WWII, is filled with weirdness. I’m 65, and I still have dreams about that place! I worked there a little less than two years, all told, but it haunts my memories. If you live within a few hours of it, I’d go and scope it out - you won’t regret it. Peace

As a local (St Thomas) who passes this facility regularly and made a handful of trips to visit family & friends who spent some time in there during the 90's/00's, and being a former delivery driver who occasionally had to bring food out to the criminally insane unit around back, I've always had an incredibly big fascination with with this building and its history. You mentioning "curious" deaths has me very intrigued. I'd love to learn about some of these

Worked there until it closed down, wonderful place to work, it's a shame to see it fall apart the way it is now. Worked on the western pavilion which closed first while the Forensic Units operated on Eastern pavilion until the new hospital was built. The tunnels beneath were awesome

heres a bit of an article about it I found online.... St. Thomas Psychiatric Hospital opened in 1939 and served over 1700 patients. The institution was abandoned in the summer of 2013, and a new mental health facility was developed soon after to replace it. In the time that the facility was active, it housed a few notorious patients who committed violent deeds, including impaling, strangling, bludgeoning, and torturing other patients or co-workers. People claim to have heard random sounds (banging, crying and whispering), and seen flickering lights and moving objects during their visit. Today, there is heightened security at the site, but it may be possible to have a short "wander" around the grounds where the old hospital once stood during daylight hours

Unfortunately this place is pretty far out of town for anyone who is homeless to even get to, also sadly is used for movie sets and is right beside the OPP police station and is always patrolled.

I know this is a late post lol. For whatever reason, I have always been very interested in abandoned hospitals. It's so sad to see them closed down and left to rot. What an amazing opportunity to be able to tour here. Always wanted to but hear its heavily secured. I'm glad I at least got to see the old London Psyh before they tore that down, even kf it wasn't under the best circumstances as a teen. Was also able to explore the old Woodstock hospital before they tore that down too. It's great to be able to somewhat see the inside. I would take me hours to tour myslef as I would want to check out each and every room. Don't know why I didn't stumble upon this video years sooner.

They used to run golf carts down there to get from one end of the other. When I was trapped in that place - never should have been - they moved us from one ward to another chained together. It was a very long walk.

So many thoughts running around in my head. I expected to see evidence of a huge kitchen or multiple kitchens but didn't see any except for the children's kitchen on the outside. It appears that at least the main building has been maintained while the rest have been left to the elements. With all the people who are living on the street it's too bad that the Government hasn't made these rooms available for shelter but I'm sure that would lead to a lot of delays due to red tape. Wish I could have heard what you were saying at the end of the video. Nice coverage of the site, thanks.

I mean, I like all your videos, but this one is top notch. I even like the calming background music. Worked there for a few years before it was closed down and the wards moved into the hospital in London, Ont. Our ward was in the back pavilion now boarded off. By the way, is this an old video, the hopital has been closed for many years now and it still looks really new. There have been a movies made there, the most high profile is last year "Scary stories to tell in the dark" produced by Guillermo del Toro,

Great video. Question for you. How did you get from section to section? I happen to know that there are concrete walls poured between the sections, which means you need to go back outside and find a way into the next section everytime. I assumed that once you got into the building, you had access to everywhere inside the place. That is not the case at all. Did you go in before the walls had been poured between sections?
