I'm British, and just got back from a holiday in the USA. I spent time all over the deep south and spent two nights in Mississippi. My experience was excellent, the people were absolutely hospitable, the scenery was serene and pretty and I just fell in love with the culture and fascinating history of Mississippi. As a non American, Indian British man, go to Mississippi. It's a lovely state.
ThePsychoGamers15 Well,as an fellow Englishman who's been there as well,I'd say the nice bits are nice, and the shit bits are shit. I traveled through the US in 1999 and coming from a British person there is no doubt in my mind that the “southern states” were the most genuine people I met, whether you like them or not they’re honest. When I was in New York, jersey and LA I have never met a bunch of smug, egotistical, self righteous, spoilt pricks in all my life.
Yeah, I’m from the South and moved to California. People I worked with would make fun of southerners in front of me, and when I tried to defend them, they would tell me that southerners aren’t “my” type of people. The condescension was incredible. It usually comes from a bunch of ignorant people who’ve never been to south and just believe all the stereotypes like everyone’s racist, poor, and dumb. They’re the dumb ones for thinking that.
I’m 34 years old. I was born and raised in MS, and lived there until 2016 when I left for a my career. A couple of observations from this video. 1) This is not an accurate portrayal of MS. There are well educated, hard working people in MS. While people may look down on the state as poor and part of the south, what they miss is the genuine hospitality the people there have for one another. 2) While this video tries to show MS as the poorest state with nothing but racism and ignorance, they only interviewed white males. What about the other people from other walks of life?! As someone who has traveled the country and met people from various walks of life, I guarantee that you will find ignorant and racist people in each and every state. This video solidifies more that Bill Maher and his show is just a way to belittle people and doesn’t fully state all facts and perspectives.
@jamesstricklin4056 yes they are. The rich ones are like this too with just proper English and they are better at hiding their views but not that good. I know because I've been around them. Southerners have no idea how they appear and sound to others in the North and Midwest. The culture is stuck in a distant time.
I'm from Ala, I go over to Mississippi quite often, this video does not depict in no way the majority of the people there. they are some of the nicest people anywhere
You can find horrible people in every state to “represent” it. This show has a political/social agenda and they’re going to build their narrative even if it’s dishonest.

Having spent the first twenty years of my life in Mississippi, I can tell you that this video accurately depicts the very worst that this state has to offer, the bottom 5%. Mississippi isn't a state of wealth, nor will it ever be with the way the rest of the nation looks at us. Do most people who live here get to make a lot of money? No, but that only conditions the people here to appreciate more the things that they ARE able to have. It makes them a very grateful and hospitable people, and it makes them no less intelligent that the other forty-nine states.
@Cameron Broadway Okay which is weirder? Replying to a 1 year old comment, or that commenter from 1 year ago replying immediately? It doesn't really matter. Regardless, a lot's happened in a year, it fucking sucks here, avoid this state at all costs. If you wanna see an Elvis Museum, go see the one in fucking Tennessee. There some nice people here, but there are many more nice people literally everywhere else you go. Thank you sir, and have a nice day/afternoon/evening, depending on where you live. 💙
It makes them a very grateful and hospitable people, and it makes them no less intelligent that the other forty-nine states eh? Well, I'm a Christian and grateful for everything I have. But I have a college degree with honors from a university who's business school was ranked 8th in the top 10 in the country at the time. I've had post graduate study too. So what you're saying is THESE people are as intelligent as me eh? Hmmmmm..... And this is the bottom 5%? I always thought the bottom 5% were black sharecroppers living in shacks on someone else's land! And why ISN'T it a state of wealth? When Trent Lott was your senator, he kept getting all that money appropriated to build factories and plants down there! Where did all that money go? Plus, he got more homeland security money appropriated for Mississippi to protect cotton fields than states like New York and New Jersey who had the bridges, tunnels and ports to protect!
@@retroguy9494 this comment makes you seem like you’re not actually that intelligent. We may be the poorest state but we are number one when giving to charitable causes and don't forget that Mississippi had some of the first responder in NYC during 911. As a Mississippian, I grew up in a area where African, Caucasian, Asian, Hispanic, Muslim, Jewish, and many other people lived and I grew up understanding the differences in people and how at the end of the day everyone is human, my grandmother always told me "never to judge people because of color but to acknowledge that we all bleed red" I don't know where racism happens in this state but if there are racist people here it's extremely ignorant yet rare

@@ethandollarhide7943 I guess that just depends on what town you go to. The town I was in has many different kinds people and different relegions in it. If what I see and know from experience makes me a moron who doesn't know anything than the best thing I can tell you is go to places like Laurel or Hattisburg and see for yourself, looking on the internet instead of going to the towns I recommended will prove me right that this state isn't how it looks and how it only depends on what town you go to that can be toxic and my reason for saying why it's rare is because I never had an experience or seen someone have an experience of being judged because of color. I lived in Natchez, and I never once saw racism in-person (again, in my presence), but I sure as hell saw it in Cincinnati and Southeastern Indiana. The biggest racists I ever saw were Hoosiers.
