I had the Dad’s Army game as a child. Loved it.

Looks like a fine day out. Like many of a certain age, Dad's Army has a special place in my heart. Thursday night, sitting with dad, eating fish and chips (mum always went out to a ladies' club on Thursday nights) or pie and mash, and we'd watch Tomorrow's World, Top Of The Pops, and Dad's Army. I use a 'Stupid Boy' tea mug every day, and I have a Walker T-shirt - he was my favourite character, and I do remember crying when the news reported James Beck's terribly premature death. It was a lovely show that still makes me laugh, no matter how many times I watch it. And the depth and love given to the characters was, and is phenomenal. We think 'Back story' is a new thing, but every main character had one. The best had to be Godfrey - who was shamed when it was found out he had been a conscientious objector in the last war - but had been highly decorated for rescuing several men under heavy fire whilst on the front as a stretcher bearer. That puts Mainwearing in his place. And Walker - he's rather looked down upon for being a 'spiv', but as the show progresses, it's obvious that everyone, including Mainwearing and the prissy Vicar, are using his services.

There is/was also a smaller DA museum at Bressingham Steam Gardens. I was last there about 10 years ago and they had Jones Butchers Van. But look at this it seem Thetford is its natural home.

I have the honour of having made the truly great Jimmy Perry laugh. I'd bunked off school to watch them film 'Hi-De-Hi'. During a break I asked him for his autograph. He seemed surprised and asked why. Nervous and tongue tied I blurted out "Because you writ it!" which made him (and a nearby Yellow Coat) laugh out loud! I've dined out on this story for years! Can't wait for the next time I get to tell it! 😁

Nice video. I visited a few years ago and thoroughly enjoyed it. Perhaps worth mentioning is the fact that the Burrell traction engine museum is a 10 minute walk away through the pedestrianised town centre, and they often have traction engines running on days when the Dad's Army museum is open.

One my favourite episodes😢 is one I never knew existed & the last I got to enjoy brand new .... it is where mainwarings brother comes to town ... played superbly by arthur lowe...some very clever split screen utilised & a very happy sad episode....expert written...perry & croft what a partnership...I ❤ that perry wrote walker for himself & croft said no to playing the part....without a doubt my favourite TV show...

Thanks thanks stu what a great on location video! Don't need a respectful management manner towards the museum where you picked out little bits of the museum to make your video, but you haven't gone around showing every single artifact just giving people the idea of what's there. He's good to make sure people do go to the museum and it was great to put a voice to the face. Love dad's army. Even though I'm only 40, I've watched it all my life and still watch it to this day

I used to live in Watton just up the road. My sister lived in Carbrooke adjacent to the then airfield. Some of the opening title shots were filmed at the back of her house. My brother lived in Merton and his neighbour said they were often seen filming and in and around the area. Even until recent when I stayed at his house it wasn't uncommon to see soldiers training. We were told they filmed some lake shots at Lynford Lakes where a few years later "Allo, Allo" was filmed in the quadrangle at Lynford Hall. My mum's neighbour who worked in Thetford at the time said she often saw them in The Bell and they would all speak to local people except Arthur Lowe who was a snob.

Mrs Fox’s name was Marcia Mildred Fox. I think she mentioned it in an episode when the Americans came over?

My Mum and I visited the museum before we moved from Norfolk and we had a great day out! It's well worth a visit if you're into Dad's Army. I'd probably say if you're not local (we were an hour away then) you might want to plan some other things to do as it's not going to take a whole day to see, unless you read everything. Mind you that was over a decade ago so maybe they've added some stuff now. I can't remember if they had the van then, I'd have to look up my photo's to see. Teflon coated memory! Anyway, Nice to put a face to the voice Stu! Yeah, more stuff like this would be great!

Well, well well; by an amazing coincidence I dreamt that I met Private Walker last night, or rather the actor Jimmy Beck. Unfortunately in my dream he wasn't as nice as I had hoped, however that may be linked to the fact that in real life I was formerly married to a...Jo Walker!

When we watched as kids in the 70s, with our parents, miss those days when families were together, miss programes all about murders or sex, sorry I am older and there are no comedy on telly, and people with no crisma

the guy stood in front of Mr. Jones's van looks like a tall Godfrey, but with Mr. Cheeseman's teeth. lol I still have the board game, although it is in a tatty condition. one in good condition now sells for a few hundred quid, due to the controversy of the triangular swastika pieces.

That looks like it is worth a visit next time i'm in Norfolk. Always baffled me though, why they filmed around Thetford and other Norfolk locations. The actual location was suggested to be in Sussex, near Eastbourne, which has a very picturesque landscape, but nothing like the 'flatness' of Norfolk!?

Hello Stu😃 I did not realise there was a Dad’s Army Museum. I will certainly look that one up. “Dad’s Army” was my Father’s favourite programme. He always said that “Dad’s Army” was so true to life.

Mr Jones’ van. I’ve been in that 😊 I was involved in the production of a spoof film on Dads army by a group of amateur filmmakers in Kent in the early 1990s.
