Today, we visit the Shady Pines Railroad across town from the Mill Brook Railroad in Windsor, Vermont. This 7-1/4" gauge pike is built in a village lot and is still under construction. It features a long, steep yard lead to the second floor of a 100+ year old carriage barn down to a loop around the house. Regular viewers will have seen the track on this channel before, as it came from the Richmond Mountain Railroad in southern New Hampshire.

It may be battery powered, but that is a nicely built climax locomotive. Love how the line hugs the side of the hill just like the old logging railroads. Thanks for sharing!

There's a story about that loco that I may share next week. Let's just say it didn't used to be well built.

@@MillBrookRailroad Wold love to see some more info on the loco. I have it in my head that I will one day build a loco but its gotta be a "steamer"... however dealing with boiler certs and such seems like a pain and I was actually contemplating if an electric steamer would be viable. Also I have to ask... is there a reason behind the flat deck spelling "Canadien" (Montreal hockey team) instead of Canadian National?

I just found this Millbrook farms 2days ago on video I should watch as I have a love for trains. I would love to ride from Omaha NE to Chicago and to Cleveland Ohio and from Cleveland Ohio to Minneapolis MN to Seattle to Anchorage Alaska and come back and tour some shops and end back in Minneapolis MN My bucket list or rent a RV and hit some rivers and go rafting and fishing down the Colorado.

Very nice little railway. I like the barn loft like feel of the shed. A great open space. Lots of possibilities for the track as well. I could see a turntable at the shed entrance rather than the tight curve. I suppose it would have to be large enough for two - a locomotive and a piece of rolling stock, etc. Could also put in a second track coming off the turntable so that the locomotive could run around the train. It'll be nice to see another visit as work progresses.

There will be more visits. This railway is a lot like a logging railroad. It needs to drop down one story to get to the incomplete loop. The shed is the old carriage barn from the Kennedy estate in Windsor, VT. (That would be the inventors of the Fig Newton, not the political Kennedys). It was a grand estate that was broken up over the years, starting in the 1920's. The main house is long gone, but the servant house is in the video and the gardener's house is also still standing. The turntable idea has merit. There is one at the back of the shed just large enough for the climax but there isn't quite enough room to put one at the entrance to the barn.

You certainly didn't put any more ties down in certain areas than absolutely necessary LOL... Good stuff thanks for posting.

@MillBrookRailroad

It spent a year here, but it didn't do well due to mechanical issues. It's been rebuilt since then. I absolutely could use a locomotive the size of the climax, though. What I'll actually do will probably be smaller, though. I'm planning on building a batch of locomotives like the MLBK 70.

Thanks for sharing. I love the whole set up. The house and barn are great. The best part of the track experience seems to be coming out of the barn and along the hillside. Once the loop is complete, I think I'd want to set it up to be both ride on and remote controlled capable. I'm really a bit jealous as my poor attempt at a steam loop has stalled out for various reasons. Good luck as you continue on!

Very nice, I need a workshop like that for my 7.5 railroad. Are you planning on cutting across driveway near your loading track to make a loop??

I noticed on your flatcar, that one side you spelled Canadien, while the other side says Canadian. Nice video, and nice little train you have there!
@MillBrookRailroad
@MillBrookRailroad 2 года назад
That's the way Canadian National does it. Canadien National is French for Canadian National, which is English for three ring circus. :-)

A couple of turn tables would assist, engines always look better going front ward than back ward.[frontard and backard]

Noticed the crankshaft doesn't move at a prototypical speed compared to the loco speed.. still a nice engine though

Some of the ties are close together, some are far apart. How does one know how closely to space them?
@MillBrookRailroad
@MillBrookRailroad 11 месяцев назад
It depends on the rail, but a good rule of thumb is to space ties evenly, the space of a tie apart. The Shady Pines does not consistently follow that rule of thumb. It works out, though. Mostly due to heavy steel rail and light loads.

I had thought about overhead wire on the MLBK, but the batteries do so well by themselves that I really can't justify the expense. Instead, I'm experimenting with different radio control systems. Now, I'm not sure if it was noticeable but the red box cab is in the barn at the Shady Pines. It had been on loan to the MLBK for awhile.
