A Wagon's Front Axle 5th Wheel Bolster Rebuild | Engels Coach Shop

Preserving pieces of an original wagon is difficult when they are missing, but scrounging through salvaged parts I am able to find original irons that will fill in the gaps. Building and restoring horse drawn vehicles sometimes requires some improvising, and this week I can combine pieces from different old wagons to make a match for this particular wagon I am trying to preserve.

I have to endorse Mark Watson's Watson's response. It's not easy to hand drill deep holes from both sides to meet in the middle as casually and surely as Dave. He's a man of rare skills in plenty.

I really love watching you work on all these old wagons. I spent about 35 years working on old steam ships and later, diesel ships. and most of the tools and techniques you use are quite familiar to me. I must tip my hat to you, as being a way better craftsman and artisan than I ever was or ever will be. If I lived nearby, I would gladly lend a hand on some of your jobs.

I can't believe how you can drill all those through holes from both sides and meet up to create a continuous through hole. Bleeping amazing!!!! Your videos are absolutely awesome and educational. Thanks so much for taking the time to create and post them.

Mr. Dave...I have just spent the last 6 1/2 waking days watching your videos from day ONE until this newest one here. Due to my sleeping pattern I am functionally awake from 20 to 32 hours a "day" and from 6 to 10 asleep at "night". I have very eclectic tastes for knowledge...from quantum theory to electrical/electronics (solid state & tube) to HAM/SW to wheelwright/wainwright...and so on. Yours is hands down the best channel on RU-vid! Seriously! Thank you so much for all your hard work and contributions to keeping this field alive for a new generation.

I was in Texas for work from Wednesday until today and decided to watch TV in my hotel room after I finished yesterday. I happened to stumble across a "How It's Made" marathon and started watching. The 2nd episode had a segment on how wagon wheels are made. I kept saying to myself throughout the entire segment "You're doing it wrong." and "That's not going to last". I wanted to email the producers and tell them to visit Dave so they can film how it's supposed to be done.

I got an old army buddy who rode a BSA hard tail chopper back in the early 80s. I used to watch him work on that scoot from time to time. He'd always peen a thread or two on a bolt. I asked him why he did that. He said "it might come loose but I'll never lose it!"

Thank you for your very detailed video sharing. China never develop a 4-wheeled wagon in our own history due to failue to solve the steel issue. I still saw farmers use very primitive traditional wagon with a structure of wood bar on 2 rubber wheel when i was very young during early 1990s. It is always exited to see how those wood whees, hub, steel mechnism made by hand using modern tool. It is just like a live TV show of industrial revolution of 18th century for me.

When I saw those geraniums I thought of a short story by Australian writer Henry Lawson called 'Water Them Geraniums'. It was written at a time when horse-drawn carriages were the primary means of transport. In fact the first paragraph mentions 'traps', 'tip-drays', 'waggons', and a 'spring-cart'. I needed to do a quick search on these terms to get an idea of what they looked like.
