Taking a walk around the Three Cities of Malta - Cospicua, Vittoriosa & Senglea and exploring the beautiful architecture & fascinating history on a day trip from Valletta.
🇲🇹 See more of my Drive Malta videos here → bit.ly/DriveMalta
Just across the Grand Harbour of Valletta are the Three Cities of Malta, one of the islands most popular places to visit. There are regular ferries that run from Valletta to the Three Cities so getting there is easy - it’s also a great way of seeing the beautiful harbour and waterfront on the way in. These cities existed before Valletta and so the history and culture go back a long way.
The first city I visit is Vittoriosa, a place previously known as Birgu and famous for being the home of the Order of Saint John after they arrived on the islands in 1530. I visited Fort St Angelo situated at the tip of the peninsula and gazed down at the beautiful old buildings and rooftops across Vittoriosa and beyond. The limestone fort was used to defend the harbour area during the Battle of Malta and the Great Siege of Malta - so the history is real.
After walking the old streets of Vittoriosa I headed to the largest of the Three Cities - Cospicua, a place that used to be called Bormia. Here I saw churches and fortifications, historic statues and lovely lookouts that offered impressive views out across the city. I wandered around and through St Helen’s Gate which in the old times was a controlled entrance into the city.
A few moments later I arrived at my third and final city Senglea, a place known as L’Isla until it was renamed in 1551 after Grand Master Claude de la Senglea - the man who fortified it. More churches and narrow streets awaited as I made my way along the narrow peninsula towards yet more fortifications and defensive structures, by this time the night was closing in and I had lost the light of day.
My walk around the Three Cities ended in the Safe Haven Gardens at Senglea Point, a peaceful area with stunning views across the Grand Harbour and Valletta. It was cool to look back at where I had come from and see all the city lights shining so bright, although in hindsight I wish I had arrived at the lookout inside the hours of daylight - the views would have been even more spectacular!
Thanks for joining me on my walk around the Three Cities of Malta, I have one day left on the island so I’ll see you back in Valletta for my final video next week!

The yachts by Fort Angelo had to be worth a pretty penny. Crazy to see those homes with broken glass in that part of town. But hey, even the ice cream truck didn't play music. It's cool that the doors of the church are open so you can take a peak in. St. Helen's gate looks awesome with the uplighting. The Senglea Basilica looks amazing! Didn't seem rushed. You DID cover a lot!

I find it fascinating to see the difference between churches, the 1st one you went in, so simple, yet still beautiful, yet the second one with the chequered floor was very extravagant. I feel like those super yachts right before was an appropriate build up! Was lovely to watch these 3 cities as I definitely didn't visit them when I was a teen!

Glad you enjoyed it! It certainly made for an interesting afternoon, it's a shame I didn't have a bit more time as there was definitely lots more to see and explore. I loved the churches too - so many different styles, it was good to experience. Possibly an option for you if you make it back at some point.

@@MattWhitingsEurope Your series has definitely made me want to go back and I was getting serious inspiration for this coming October half term, but sadly the flights are crazy expensive. Still need to make a decision about what I want to do!

@@WhenAdventureKnox Glad it's inspired you to get back to Malta. Before I went I made a list of all the places I wanted to see, I only made it half of them - there's just so much to see on that tiny little island. Yes I just looked at flight prices on Ryanair flying from Stansted, not too bad getting there but getting back - holy smokes! I guess that's the challenge of being a teacher?! The prices are often crazy around the school holidays, sadly. Fingers crossed you can pick up a last minute bargain.

@Matt Whiting's Europe Your description of wanting to see more than what your time allowed sums up just about all of my trips too! 🤣 We're considering something maybe a bit further away as flights and car rentals don't seem to have ballooned in quite the same way meaning they're about the same price as Spain/Malta/Greece etc. So lovely to hear from you too, hope you are well and that your MiA was for something fun and adventurous!

Yes the list of things to see is always longer than the time available! Happy booking, hope you find somewhere exciting to visit. All good over here thanks, got a little bit more editing ahead of me now ha.

Thanks for your video. Just some pronunciation hints to help. It’s Vittoriosa without an o at the end, and Cospicua without an n. Keep up the good work!

Oh and it’s Senglea not Senglee.

Thanks very much, always good to know the correct pronunciations. Some of them are quite tough. I did a bit of research before I travelled but it’s one thing to learn, another to remember!
