For this walk around Ramsgate I'm joined by my wife Heidi, and my sister Cathy. The walk starts in Ellington Road where we talk about the tunnels that run beneath the streets from Ellington Park to the seafront. From here we pass through Vale Square, past Vinyl Head records to Addington Street with the Falstaff Hotel where Wellington plotted tactics during the Napoleonic Wars, and the Queen Charlotte pub. We visit the studio of the artist Bob and Roberta Smith who shows us his paintings of Thamesmead in South East London that he's currently working on. We also look at Bob's new book, You Are An Artist which I took the photographs for.
From Bob's studio we walk along Paragon Street to Royal Crescent and look at the statue of Vincent Van Gogh in Spencer Square and the house where Van Gogh lived in 1878. We also see the school where Van Gogh taught, at 6 Royal Road, Ramsgate. We descend the steep set of steps known as Jacob's Ladder to Ramsgate Sailors Church at Ramsgate Royal Harbour. Then we walk around the Royal Harbour to the Harbour Arm.
From the Harbour we pass the Royal Victoria Pavillion pub we walk up Kent Place and look at the tiles inspired by Pugin, designed by local school children. We follow Wellington Cresent to the Plains of Waterloo where Karl Marx stayed in 1879, before heading to Artillery Road where Marx's daughter, Jenny Marx lived. Continuing along King Street, was pass the Ravensgate Arms, one of the finest pubs in Ramsgate. We then turn into Ramsgate High Street where the walk ends.

I used to live in Ramsgate firstly in Princes Road and later on a world war two, German luftwaffe boat that the RAF captured at the end of the war. We (my parents and I) were fortunate enough to have met some of the RAF crew and managed to reunite them for an afternoon back in 1987/88. The steps (Jacobs ladder) shown in the video were my my third lot of steps each day on my long walk to St. Lawrence c of e school. The boat was moored in the inner (non tidal) Harbour eventually but was previously in the outer harbour on the opposite side of the pier to where was walked. When the trawlers came in each night, I would help the fishermen carry their catch up to the awaiting vans ready for market. Fish are regulated by size at market and under sized fish aren't allowed though are often still caught unintentionally and these under sized fish would then be tipped out for those of us who helped. I would put mine into bags and then proceed to go knocking on doors up and around Spencer Square (where Van Gogh lived and taught) and Albion Place (where Queen Victoria and Queen Elizabeth 2nd both took holidays). In the latter part of 1988 I moved to Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk with my Mother. Ramsgate is still fond in my heart though.

I Just viewed this delightful video. It caught my eye because my wife Eva and I who reside in California in the U.S. but adore England for its beauty and history will be traveling back in May 2021. Because we usually come once a year and have been staying longer we are contemplating buying a "base" flat in Ramsgate. Our dear friends who live in Kent near Gravesend took us to Ramsgate in 2019. In fact I've been looking at flats in Wellington Crescent. We've been in the Big Tunnel and had tea at Whitherspoons. It's a great place! Thanks for the video

Ain't British seaside towns fantastic - run down, gentrified or in between. Atmospheric, haunting and mysterious. Should all be world heritage sites and invested in ( wasn't that in the last Labour Manifesto! They almost had a finger on the pulse of the zeitgeist if you leave out the lousey British Media!).Magnificent introductory view of harbour, cliffs and block of buildings. And some other beautiful shots esp 16.18 back towards the seafront, harbour and town. Blimey the largest Wetherspoons in the world. What's not too like about Ramsgate? I like to imagine you all had a pint in there. Never been to Ramsgate but will now, soon.

@@p.m.gallows3199 You've got a point, John does paint a rosy picture of the town. I walked around Ramsgate yesterday. Like most British towns - largely ignored and under-invested by all Governments and politicians. You can't avoid this opinion if you walk down from the station. But I don't think it's going to get better any time soon! Makes you wonder where all the tax disappears to! It certainly isn't being reinvested usefully into things that really matter like jobs, training, health, education and decent, and enough, council housing.

@@unchattytwit I visited 2day.. walked down from the station and the houses were gorgeous.. just checked zoopla and most not shy of 350 .. further down some nice flats and the property on and around harbour amazing.. possibly a few grungy streets but hey that’s ok. I was very impressed but possibly not drawn to any doom and gloom areas!

I moved here recently. It isn't quite as self-conciously "arty" as Whitstable or Margate, but it's getting that way. The history around every corner is astonishing. Pugin lived here too and built an abbey.

Another great video John. How funny that i used to live in Thanet (Cliftonville) most of my life until i moved to Woodford 2006. I discovered your channel about a year ago and even cycled passed you at the start of the lock down on one of your river Rodin walks. I actually still visit Thanet a lot as most of the gigs my band play are in and around Ramsgate. We are called Trilogy and i'm sure i've seen Cathy. Maybe at one of our gigs. We play covers and are known for our Lonnie Donegan songs as one of his sons is in the band. Funnily enough Lonnie lived in Woodford for a while. Six degrees of seperation at work eh? Also they do walks through the Ramsgate tunnels, Its a great setup and an interesting and informative walk. Maybe it could be your first below ground walk? Great vid and see you on the next one.

Lived in ramsgate for 50 years, at one point in the 18th century cottage, first building on the right, in waterloo place. My mother was a ramsgate girl and worked in harrison's cafe at the harbour at the time of the dunkirk evacuation. She spent her 19th birthday serving tea and butties to the returning sevicemen. Her recollections can still be heard in the ramsgate tunnels museum, just dial elsie's number on the bakelite phones.

I am an old Ramsgatonian born 1944 there and John has made a very good film of the place.I didn't realize just how lucky I was to see the best of Ramsgate. There was a "Merrie England" pleasure Park on the East cliff seafront. The building called "Pleasurama" was once a railway station for Londoners to come to bathe using bathing machines (preserving modesty). John could perhaps have mentioned John le Mesurier (Sgt Wilson in "Dad's Army" having a hotel on Grange Road) opposite to the Hotel de Ville pub."Captain Mainwaring" had his yacht in the inner harbour. Small hovercraft "Swift" and "Sure" were based in the outer harbour and they went to Calais. They were too small for the rough seas! The big ones took 20 cars and travelled from Pegwell bay and went across the Goodwin Sands to Calais.I went with my daughter on one and it took just 40 mins to get to France to buy a bottle of wine and cheese for a little party with "me old mum" after the return trip.Good memories. All the best to all.Paul

Great to see your sister and wife, Heidi along for the walk. Being born and raised in Sydney's western suburbs myself I know very well the beaches Heidi mentioned. Ramsgate beach seems very nice. I think the tunnels that your sister mentioned were an extended part of what was originally an underground railway that ran to the harbour . Anyone who knows Ramsgate and travelled there by train will be aware that the railway station is somewhat distant from the beach and town . This is because the railways services on the Kent coast were built by various rail companies . So there was an underground railway that took you more conveniently to the harbour but that was closed - not least because there was a rail accident in the tunnel itself . ✌️

Hello, I'm originally from North London, now living in Orange County, California. Your walks bring such a sense of home, as I probably still haven't quite settled here, nutty as that may seem! Sally Line car ferry used to go to Dunkerque in Northern France , I also used the hovercraft to Calais, Hoverspeed were the first company to charge one price for a vehicle and all its passengers.
@chrislodzinski9056

Correction. It was Hoverlloyd who started the service from Ramsgate and the one price for vehicle and occupants. Hoverspeed only came into existence when Hoverlloyd and Seaspeed merged. Pegwell Bay closed as a public hoverport and became a servicing depot for the hovercraft.

I shouldn't think I'll ever visit Ramsgate so it's so nice to see it and other places through your lens,as it were. I think that were very brainwashed or programmed from young to think that everywhere beautiful and interesting is a long way off from where we live and costs a lot of money to get to. I think recent lockdown opened a lot of people's eyes to how beautiful their own humble neighbourhoods are.

Great video thanks. My home town born and bred. Relocated to Sussex now. Yes, the only royal harbour Ramsgate is full of tunnels. The Queen Charlotte used to have a wall mural painted by the officers of the Napoleonic Wars. I could go on lol, I knew every street in Ramsgate having been a window cleaner. I cleaned all the shops and pubs in Addington St. Thanks again for a great vid. Of course you have only touched upon the local history - Ramsgate is rammed with historical facts and stories what a truly wonderful town, I remember very easily those town centre streets being jam packed with people shopping etc. as it was in the times of the Napoleonic Wars my friend. It pleases me that you enjoyed my home town. If only you visited it in the 50’s and 60’s… it was fantastic. Warm Regards and best wishes to you and your lovely wife, Dave ✌️

That was close! When I first saw the thumbnail I thought you were wearing socks with sandals. A second look, just before I unsubscribed, put me right |-) I just got the book 'You are an artist', and am enjoying it immensely. Thanks for bringing it to my attention, John

I grew up in Ramsgate - and have since lived all over the world. Haven't actually been back to Ramsgate since 2004 - but this was such a treat. Lovely to see some of the old places - and it's looking a little better than it has in recent years. Best of all were the seagulls - my favorite sound! Next time, maybe you could go to the West Cliff! That King's Theatre was a cinema back in the 60's!

John your favorite street Addington street, I was told used to have a weekly market. And I agree with you it has a lot of charm! Hopefully more people will invest in this street and it will become once more a busy vibrant place. I love the Falstaff!!!

Thank you for the Lovely video John and a special hello to Heidi as I also grew up in Manly. My wonderful Grandparents had a home on the hill above the ferry pier just a short walk from little Manly Beach and my Mum and Dad built a house in Forestville. I also married an Englishman and we are currently living in Australia. My lovely sister in law Debbie I Lives in Ramsgate. We long to be able to revisit but for know we must settle for FaceTime calls so it was so nice to see the sights. Thank you again Regards from Australia 🐨🇦🇺🐨

John my good fellow , you appear to be tripping over all my old haunts . I can,t quite remember the name of the pub ( white hart ? ) somewhere around Blackhorse Road I think , I used to go there on a Sunday night and watch Steve Marriott with his pack of three . Please also try and stay away from St Albans , I bounced out of a few local drinking establishments there too .... lots of love to you and your beautiful wife from Liverpool

Absolutely lovely walk video. Lovely to see your wife & sister. Loved the impromptu visit to Bob’s art studio. Shame Bob didn’t beat Michael Gove in the election!! I’d certainly have voted for Bob!! Also loved the stories of Van Gough. Pugin and the tiled steps fascinating. May have to pay Ramsgate a visit!

Thanks John, a possible retirement home for me. Some years away yet (so probably too late!). Time varied across the UK back in the day - it was only the railways that brought us into national step. Because er, timetables and crashes etc. Love to all.
