Join me for a walk through the beautiful old town of Gdansk in Poland. This Historic city has been Poland's major Baltic port for 1000 years. Once a powerful, cosmopolitan Hanseatic city, it has been a trading centre for the Teutonic Knights, saw the first shots of WW2, and was the birthplace of 'Solidarność', the first free workers union in communist Europe. It's a stunning, beautiful city on the Baltic coast, and one of my fave places to introduce to our Insight Vacations travellers. Please share with your family and friends!
Have a great day!

We plan to visit Poland this fall. All our grandparents came to America from Poland early in the 20th century. Based on your terrific video, we will visit Gdansk. Proud of what Poland has accomplished and our Polish heritage!

Awesome film. You are a perfect narrator guide, a lovely voice to listen to, and you tell a most interesting story. I visited Gdansk in the autumn of 2020 and I love the place but I wished I could have seen your video before it. I am actually planning a second visit now so your guide will be very useful indeed. The Solidarity museum is so vibrant and fill me with such awe. I remember the days of 1980 very well and it is inspiring to see what change is possible if we unite and just put our collective minds to it. Thank you!

Why King Arthur? In the Middle Ages, Europe experienced many famine events caused by crop failures. The grain harvests were affected the most. In West Europe, wheat was the main cultivar and as it requires a long growth period it was also the most susceptible to the severe fluctuation of weather patterns. The small wheat harvest being the base of staple food, equated to famine. England, (if one counts it as a part of Europe ;) have had seen such traumatic events quite often. The most ‘famous’ was the Great Famine of 1315-1317. Agricultural practices in Poland then were different, and they haven’t had relied so heavily on a single staple food crop - WHEAT. The RYE was the other significant cultivar that produces smaller yields but more consistently even in bad weather seasons. That's why Gdańsk was so important merchant port and the Vistula River the umbilical cord feeding starving Europe on occasions. Taking into account the frequency of famine events in England one might infer that the merchants under King Arthur's emblem were 'the best' customers in Gdańsk those days (what about today ? :). So, why King Arthur's name was selected for Merchant Court? It should be obvious by now ... marketing in the business is everything!

Damn, I'm impressed. You made a great clip. I enjoyed watching it. Many Poles don't have such knowledge about this city. I have often corrected historical inaccuracies in RU-vid comments. I bow my head before your great work. Congratulations !!! Gdańsk was destroyed in 86%. Sovieci did the main damage after the end of hostilities. I highly recommend Gunter Grass's book "The Tin Drum" or the 1976 movie. The Old Town was only partially rebuilt. It is actually contemporary construction with reconstructed facades. The buildings in the city were more dense. Referring to the cosmopolitan traditions of the city, a Theater was built referring to the tradition of Elizabethan theater. Shakespeare festivals are held there. This is a very interesting contemporary building. A less known fact is the bombing of the city of Wieluń. It was the first act of II W.W. . The first bomb fell at 5:21 on All Saints Hospital. 75% of the city's fabric was destroyed.

@@OnceUponaTimeInKrakow You read the entire trilogy - Tin Drum, Cat and Mouse, Dog Years. The entire Gdańsk trilogy deals with the development of fascism and war episodes, the plot of which takes place in Gdańsk, a city on the border of culture, the "little homeland" of Poles and Germans who have lived together for hundreds of years. Gunter Grass was awarded the Nobel Prize for this. The movie won an Academy Award (1979 or 80)

Wieluń is a town, not a city. It had (and still has) no military, administrative or industrial importance. By choosing a town rather than a city as the war's first target for bombardment, Germany signalled to the world that it was waging a total war and not a conventional one.

This is very good, but a bit sanitized. You seem to want to avoid the reason why so many buildings are in the Dutch or Flemish style. Could it be that many of the original inhabitants were Dutch or Flemish or. God forbid, Germans? As Poland emerges from communism it has started to deal with its past, including the fact that 5 million Germans were forced out and replaced by 5 million Poles who had come from what is now western Ukraine and Belarus. Most honest Poles will tell you that they are inhabiting a city and a region that was not really all that Polish, but was at best partly Polish in some places. They will tell you that their ancestors came from places such as Lvov and Wilna. At least they are being honest.

This is a wonderful video introducing me to Poland. I ran into an English gent whilst on Grimsey Island a couple of weeks ago. He told another woman & I at the guesthouse, that we should visit Poland because it's a beautiful country with a lot of history & very nice people etc. I said, okay. I will. During the last week of my trip, I met a super nice guy from Poland who was also touring Faroe Islands & he agreed with what the English gent told me. So now, I've added Gdańsk, Poland to my September itinerary. Is there a link to Agnes' tour? I'm a little late to viewing this & not sure if I missed it mentioned in comments already. Thank you!
