Hikawa Maru is a cargo-passenger liner that was built in 1930 for the Japan-Seattle line by NYK line. Around the 1920s, there were growing calls in Japan for building its own high-grade ships in order to compete with the large ships introduced by Europe and the United States. Hikawa Maru was a state of the art ship at the time it was built. During World War II, Hikawa Maru was set up as a navy hospital ship. The ship struck mines on three separate occasions before the war ended but avoided being sunk. After the war, it was re-fitted as a cargo-passenger ship and resumed service on the Seattle Line in 1953. Having been in service for 30 years, Hikawa Maru Made 254 voyages across the Pacific Ocean and carried more than 25,000 passengers in total during its lifetime, including Charlie Chaplin, and Japanese Prince and Princess Chichibu. Since 1961, the ship has been kept at Yamashita Park in Yokohama where it has become a popular attraction visited by many people over many years. Hikawa Maru was temporarily closed for refurbishing in 2006 and re-opened to the public in 2008 as in NYK Hikawa Maru. Being the only surviving cargo passenger liner build in Japan before World War II and having earned a high reputation as a valuable industrial heritage that preserves shipbuilding technology and inboard interior decoration, the ship was designated as a nationally important cultural property in 2016.

Greetings from Jacksonville Beach, Florida. I'm about to build a 1/350th scale Hasegawa kit of the Hikawa Maru, and a 1/700 scale of the Hikawa Maru (hospital ship). Your video will be an enormous help on my build. She was and still is a beautiful and magnificent ship. I enjoyed your video very much. Again thank you for the video and the inspiration it's given me to complete the models I'm working on. 🇯🇵🤝🇺🇲 0:06

Nice. I’m very glad to hear that this will help you in building a model of it. Hope it goes well! Sounds difficult.

Speaking of models, the Hikawa Maru model at 24:29 has a pretty interesting backstory as well. That model was originally housed at NYK's Vancouver offices and was confiscated by the Canadian government when WW2 broke out. After the war, it was sold to an Idaho car dealer. After the dealer's death, his widow and the rest of his family donated the model to the Wisconsin Maritime Museum at Manitowoc, Wisconsin (where the dealer's wife came from), where it was displayed for a few decades until the WMM donated it to NYK 10 years ago, who then displayed the model inside Hikawa Maru herself.

In 2015, Musha Productions produced an anime film about Hikawa Maru, entitled "Hikawa Maru Monogatari". It was based on a book of the same name by Genjiro Ito, and it follows the history of the ship through the eyes of a fictional crewmember named Jiro Hirayama.

Hello. There seems to be to contact info anywhere so I guess I'll try my luck here. I'm making a video about a videogame called Echo Night and the devs (early FromSoftware) took Hikawa Maru as the main reference for creating their Orpheus ship. It would mean a lot if I could use some of your footage to show the actual ship that inspired them, if thats okay of course. If not, thats totally understandable, just please let me know.

This is the ship the Jigoro Kano, the founder of Judo, passed away on. I wonder if there is any signage on the ship that mentions his travels or death on the Hikawa Maru?

Interesting. I didn’t know that. And unfortunately, no, I don’t remember seeing any signs that said that.

You know that Jigoro Kano's death is under suspicious circumstances, right?
