A Walk through the ancient borough of East Ham in 4K. Starting on Wanstead Flats we see the regrowth a year after the terrible fire of July 2018. Then we walk through Manor Park, past the Earl of Essex pub on Romford Road and the old Coronation Cinema. The walk continues along the length of High Street North and South East Ham, where it's sad to see The Ruskin Arms boarded up. We pay homage to the wonderful town hall and the walk ends at St. Mary Magdalene Church where we look for the grave of the great antiquarian William Stukeley.

I used to live in those curved flats at 12.34 from birth to 9 yrs old.. Charlton court.. Opposite the fire station. I remember the traffic jams outside every West Ham home game..The news agents in the parade of shops I seem to remember was a news agents even back then? And I used to explore the churchyard with my brother many times.. I'm 60 now and live in west wales and this made my day. Thank you sir.. 😊

Thankyou so much for your nostalgic walk which took me back to my childhood. I grew up opposite Wanted flats in Whitta Road. I lived in the same block of flats with Clive Burr ex drummer of Iron Maiden. We use to climb trees and spend hours over the flats. I remember cows roaming there and sometimes they would walk down our street! My dad worked at Beckton gas works and mum worked for the rubber factory William Warns. My aunts and uncles lived in East Ham , one lived at the retro flats you showed. My mum told me she went dancing to the bands every Saturday in Central park and go to the pictures that are now shut down. I have so many happy memories and it gave me goosebumps seeing the cemetery where my nan is buried. Thankyou again it made my day

As a current resident of east ham since my family moved here back in 98 , i am really enjoying reading the comments of people who use to live down here and sharing there memories . i find it fascinating to learn how it was before the main wave of asian families moved in (like my family) ... so much changes since early years living here ! Unfortunately certain people dont take care of the town they call home :( . thanks for making this video. Learnt things i never knew before!

Another great video! In the 70's to mid 80's I used to go to East Ham often. It has changed so much. My Dad used to go to East Ham Grammar School, located IIRC behind the Town Hall. When I was a kid my Dad used to take me almost every Saturday in the winter to the Public Baths to swim. Public Baths, ha now that's a thing of the past. There were real Public Baths there as well as the swimming pool, where folks with no bath at home could have a soak. Sometimes Dad bought me a Horlicks in the cafeteria, a real treat. As a teen I used to work in East Ham McDonalds. Oh the nostalgia.

Hello Mr Rogers, I enjoyed your video as I worked in East Ham for 20 years, years ago now. Just a coupe of points for you, I was surprised that when you filmed the (Sad to me) now closed Ruskin Arms because what the Pub is Famous for is that in the last 1970s the World Famous Rock Band Iron Maiden used to play in there and also at the Cart And Horses in Maryland Point Stratford. I know this as I used to go and see them at the 2 pubs most weekends. The place where The Beatles played was an old Cinema on Barking Road The Granada In I think 1964, I remember seeing their name up as I passed it on the Bus with my Mum when I was little. The Rolling Stones played in there as well. 😊❤️

Love the video John. Brought back many memories. I remember most of those places when they were 'alive and Kicking'. Lived in East Ham from @1956 until the mid 1970's. My dad, bless him, tried to get us tickets for the Beatles concert at the Granada in 1963 but it had sold out so he decided to buy us tickets for the next concert. As a result, instead of getting to see the Fab Four, we ended up going to see a bill which consisted of Jet Harris & Tony Meehan (ex Shadows), Paul & Paula (one hit wonders 'Hey Paula'), and Jess Conrad who I believe is still going strong today ... so near yet oh so far eh?

Gary Glitter and the Bay City Rollers also played there. My sister was distraught because mum wouldn't let her go to the BCR concert. Mum knew about music (or so she liked to pretend) and declared the Bay City Rollers was just drunken Scots! She also said of Queens Bohemian Rhapsody "Well that's not going make it onto "Top of the Pops". Thank God she was a decent secretary because I couldn't see Melody Maker calling her up anytime soon. I also remember as a kid in the 70's seeing an indoor circus perform at The Granada

Hi John, I really enjoyed this walk with you. I was born and grew up in East Ham 1957, went to the pictures at the Coronation, played over at Wanstead park. I lived down cowper ave, off Platshet Grove, the houses were posh as the doctors from East Memorial hospital would live there before we moved in. I am going to seek out your other videos. Had a chuckle at the reference to the Beatles once playing at the Granada in Barking Road. It was March 1963 and they weren't even top of the bill. It was Tommy Roe and Chris Montez. I claim bragging rights because I was there. I also spent a lot of time at the Coronation when it was a cinema. As usual a good video for old gits like me for reminiscing.

I enjoyed that. As someone who was brought up in East Ham much of this looks familiar, I'm sure the Red Lion used to be the hammers pub, it also had a single pump petrol station located there but the car had to stop on the kerb so the hose would have to stretch across the pavement which must have caused some irritation at the time. East Ham nature reserve was opened by the queen in 83, I remember getting the morning off school to join the crowds in seeing her.

Another nice one John.At the junction of High St North and Romford Rd opposite the "William The Conquer"pub was one of the first M.F.I.(now Howden Joinery)stores from the early 70`s.they had to put all the stock out on the pavement & bring it back at closing time. Other closed pub`s are the Burnell Arms and the Cock.Just past the station was C&A now Lidl I think.In Wakefield St.by the market was Muddys Pie & mash shop ,so popular that the local corner shops used to sell their pies from their ice cream freezers.The Denmark Arms on the corner of The Barking Rd.is one of the largest pub`s still going.There is an etched glass door with the legend "Luncheon Rooms Upstairs"a throwback to more genteel times. The Red Lion used to be The Hammers when I lived round there.Alf` Garnett is seen drunk outside there in one episode. In the late 90`s an off license was robbed and people shot.The Air Ambulance Helicopter landed on the crossroads at the Town Hall,& we watched amazed as there was only a few feet clearance between the blades & the street lights at the four corners.One person not impressed was the owner of a store on the corner who had rails of tee shirts & other garments on the pavement.The down wash of the helicopter blades ensured that lots of people had free tee shirts.The Irony was that the Victims were taken away by normal ambulance.I expect the full story is available from the local paper archives. I believe it was a matter within one family who owned a number off-licences. Opposite the graveyard over the A13 was The Beckton Ski Slope utilising the slag heap from the old Beckton Gas Works.I used to take the kid`s to the top.It was a fantastic view. You could see right across London from The City & Tower bridge to Alexandra Palace,& east as far as The Dartford Crossing. Gone now.I think the used most of it in the new roadworks.

John, that Hindu temple looks like it may also have been a cinema at one time; it’s design looks similar to a number of others built around 1929 to early ‘30s. I used to work in I.T. But am now semi retired, but used to work as a part time projectionist at the David Lean cinema in Croydon until it was shut down by the virus last year. Several pubs in my part of the workd were boarded up during the first lockdown, re-opened when it was lifted, but are now boarded up again. The one you saw may not be closed permanently, although there are many that will not re-open. Not too far from your area is Newbury Park Bus Station. It’s a simple building, but I think it’s quite interesting, and it won a design award at the Festival of Britain, for which it still carries a ceramic plaque. Maybe you could include it in one of your walks? I bought the book for my Kindle by the way, haven’t read it yet, am waiting for things to open up again.

Lots of surprises in this one: I did NOT expect to see the conclusion of Longfellow's "The Ladder of St. Augustine" in a John Rogers video. I had to memorize that in high school. (I think the line is actually "Nor deem the irrevocable past," but I doubt Longfellow would be much bothered). And the little bit of post fire ecology is something I've witnessed in the American west: interesting to see a similar process on a smaller scale in London. Thanks again!

Excellent. The building at 12:40 was home to Burgoyne, Burbidge and Co's Chemical Works. They vacated that fine Portland stone building in the early 1950s. It was originally part of a significantly larger site that was developed with some of the social housing behind. As you probably noticed, part of the building was taken over by the Fire Service. Between about 1990 until around 2000, the other section of the building that you filmed which is still empty, was a temporary home for the old Passmore Edwards Museum's social history, natural history, geology, archaeology and textile collections (latterly Newham Museum/Heritage Service) together with the Essex Field Club's natural history collections too. The room to the left of the entrance was a reception office. You wouldn't think it to look at the state of the building now, but several environmentally controlled areas were created within the building where sensitive collections such as lepidoptera, books (there was a library) and taxidermy were stored. There was even a book/paper conservator based there, together with archaeological staff. I recall seeing 500 skeletons of monks exhumed from the old Stratford Langthorne Abbey site laid out upstairs once shortly after the Jubilee Line extension prompted the borough's archaeology unit to excavate (at one time, the Passmore Edwards Museum's archaeology unit was larger than the Museum of London's). The borough's museum service also founded the Nature Reserve across the road from there some years before. I worked at all sites - of which there were several - at one time or another. You will find some great contemporary photos taken inside the building we called, "Burgoyne's" here: www.28dayslater.co.uk/threads/burgoyne-burbidges-and-co-chemical-works-east-ham-london-march-2015.95019/

John, the fish Bazaar shop in your shot of the row of shops before you showed the Ruskin arms was where Steve Marriott and Ronnie Lane of the Small faces met. Steve worked in what was then the J60 music bar when Ronnie went in looking for a guitar.

Thank you John a great video of the area in which I grew up. Can I be allowed to correct one point please? The derelict building in High Street South before you crossed over to St, Mary Magadalene was not the Electrical Works but Burgoynes Chemical Works. When East Ham had it's own Electrical company the works were in Nelson Street at the back of the Town Hall. Unfortunately the Burgoynes building has been left to decay over the past 30 or so years although part of the building at the northern end was used By London Fire Brigade for a while.

I used to live in Brooks Avenue back in the 70's and our garden backed onto the rear yard of Burgoynes. Newham council used for it storage for a while. At weekends us kids would play in the old building, it was a great adventure us. I remember it was a very grand building with fantastic wood panelling and plaster work everywhere

From 2005 till 2020 I worked in the Fire Safety Office that is still adjoined to East Ham Fire Station. Its the only part of Burgoynes that's still in use. I keep hearing of initiatives to refurbish the derelict part, but nothing has been done yet.

hi roger you forgot to mention the new flats on the railway bridge there took the land which was a graveyard and moved some of the graves and their remains to build the flats
@jonnotshared7590
@jonnotshared7590 3 года назад
There was a major uproar about this after some of the removed headstones were stored in a facility in Yorkshire which then ended up on the set of Emmerdale. Subsequent enquiries found that a lot of the graves in the privately run Woodgrange Cemetery were sold on a freehold basis and should not have been removed / built over. I believe the arguments are still being fought over today

Really enjoyed watching your walk, shame you didn't make mention of the Golden Fleece Pub which is much nicer than the Blakesley and i think your reference to the Red Lion might have been mistaken with the Red Lion in Leytonstone High Road. This Red Lion is in fact the new name for the previously named Hammers pub.

Thanks - Hearing you talk about William Stukeley made me wonder if Stukely Road was named after him? Checked Google but, apart from the East Ham gravesite, seems he had no other connection with the borough? I grew up in Upton Park Road where Stukeley Road now terminates on it's short journey from Plashet Road (though in it's younger days made it all the way to Elmhurst Road). What I did find in Google was this. "Also in 1739, he went into business producing medicinal oils with the daughter of John Rogers, a recently deceased apothecary whose wares Stukeley had previously championed".

Something I forgot to mention in my previous post. Somewhere in the East End a cinema was built in the style of a mosque. It closed, then saw various light industrial use until eventually being converted to ... a mosque. Seems rather appropriate. I can’t remember now exactly where it was.
