I think everything you said is spot on! Basically the EPA is to blame for listening to the lobbyists rather than implementing real life solutions to pollution and emissions concerns. For example, we can’t have 1500lb Japanese K trucks but 6500lb suvs get a tax incentive. We have to have engine killing EGR and Exhaust filters 🙄 but the big three can export the SAME vehicles to countries that HATE us that have ZERO emissions equipment installed. “Rules for thé but not for me” At the same time, we’re concerned with smog in CA, so we just outsource our pollution to China (who happens to be one of the worlds top polluters) so they can chooch out 10x the chemicals into the air where the jet stream carries it straight back to CA! Common Sense is no longer common.

You can have a clean chemical plant and refinery, just keep it properly run and not as cheap as possible. It's the C-Suite making the decisions that lead to events like Bhopal. I understand the need to have chemicals and refineries, but I absolutely do believe that trying to cheap out is what causes 99% of the damage. It is possible to be a practical environmentalist. Hell, designing a wetland to disperse treated effluent safely has created a nature park that draws people to observe birds, gators, bison, horses, and other Florida critters. It's not either or, you CAN have both sensible environmental policy and profit

It's a problem with more than just cars too, it used to be pretty common for a HD diesel engine to last for 1,000,000 miles before an in-frame if taken care of - now you'd be lucky to get half that So the engines run cleaner, but their lifespan is significantly shorter. People don't realize how much energy goes into producing all those DPFs and sensors, let alone an entire 13+ liter engine

Rainman Ray's army in the house. I absolutely agree with everything you said a d it's ridiculous. These new vehicles cost too much for very little in return in my opinion. Yes, some of the vehicles and options are very nice but I have also noticed that with this dilemma that people like me look for hidden gems from the past but unfortunately many ppl act like their old truck or car was made from gold and are asking ridiculous prices. An example, while I was financially struggling between 2002/2003-2008 raising a daughter while I was very young and starting a family, I was saving by driving several different 80-96 F-150's. I was able to grab them from as cheap as $500-$1800 was the most I spent on the 3 I bought. Now, for that same vehicle in approximately the same condition or maybe worse ppl are asking $2,500-$5 G. I find that crazy. I also find that this new vehicles are meant to be disposed of after 6-10 yrs which is in effect causing more damage to the environment with the waste/disposal of this junk. Many ppl who don't know much about vehicles just except this as it is n buy another new piece of junk. It's really sad that's where we are at nowadays. Sorry for the long rant. Good luck with the channel, u got a new sub here.

No need for apologies. I like reading the long ones. And you nailed it. You had priorities back then. And old truck like that for a couple hundred bucks we're everywhere like you said. Even I came across a few. Then prices of everything increase. (I think you know where I'm going with this) everyone is out to make a dollar but they do it all wrong. It's a cash grab. And now with the prices of new vehicles, it's crazy. So many things that go wrong. Outsourced parts that are cheap and marked up 1200 percent. Only to last 5 years. 10 if your lucky. They say it's due to price increases of raw materials. In reality it's due to price increases of the people who want more money. Green is a real thing while everyone else suffers. Thanks for the sub friend!

It's not the Clean Air Act, but the investors, board members, trustees, shareholders, and whatnot, that want to reduce costs to be competitive, while maximizing profits. Greed is quality's biggest foe. I worked for Chrysler in the early 2000's. In the morning meetings with production supervisors, they discuss quality issues. If the issue was with vehicles with over 70k miles on them, they were ignored, since they were out of warranty. They design cars to make it through the warranty period with as little problems as possible. After that, they expect you to replace the vehicle. In fact, at the time, they knew that their target group were trading in their vehicles on average every two years. Secondary warranties don't cover as much of the vehicle, either. BTW, recalls have been an issue for generations. It's only been in the last decade or so that the government agencies have really cracked down on the manufacturers. Remember, GM built the 700R4 for decades with an inherent flaw and sold cars for 15 years with bad ignition switches. Chrysler sold front wheel drive vehicles for over 20 years with a know transmission issue. Hyundai sold millions of 1.5L I4s that self destructed over a decade before addressing the issue, plus they had to provide a 100k mile power train warranty on all new vehicles. The malaise era was a time when the US was getting their ass handed to them by the Japanese. LBJ tried to help with the chicken tax by keeping out the importation of trucks. That worked for a short time until those companies brought their manufacturing to the US. VW made the Caddy in PA in 1980. Then came the Japanese. Ford imported the little Transit van, but to avoid the chicken tax, with full interiors and seats. They were removed and shipped back across the pond and put in the next batch.

I don't have an issue with the intent of the regulations, it's the implementation that is the problem. I own 3 different generations of diesel powered vehicles. One is just EGR/Catalytic, the middle one is DPF/EGR/Catalytic and the newest is DEF/DPF/EGR/Catalytic. The EGR system is the most half-assed system that has ever been implemented, it's likely unnecessary with the other components and there is NO excuse for a DPF equipped vehicle to source EGR from the prefiltered exhaust. EGR on a diesel is just dumb. EGR on a gas engine can be more useful for maintaining the desired AFR but diesels don't really care about AFR so long as there is enough air for complete combustion. These emissions systems are all highly convoluted and proprietary and servicing and maintaining them is difficult and costly. In larger trucks the DPF filters are cartridges similar to air filter elements, they can be swapped relatively easily when they reach a point of needing to be serviced, and they can usually be cleaned and restored to like new condition to be reused. I am unaware of this setup on any light duty or passenger oriented vehicle. Most DPF systems on light duty vehicles are welded into a bundle with other emissions systems, such that when one fails or needs to be serviced you have to replace everything. These required devices should not be allowed to be designed in such a manner that makes them prohibitively expensive to maintain/service. They should be implemented in a way similar to air / oil / fuel filters are. A well maintained vehicle will always be more efficient and less polluting that one that ends up getting deleted or just driven until it dies because the cost of repairs exceeds the alternatives.

I do agree with the comment that we are now in a second malaise era. I disagree with the Wikipedia article saying the Malaise era ended in 1985. All the car manufacturers, but especially GM and Chrysler were still putting out some real dog squeeze after 1985. From the car lines I worked, the Fiero, the 1988-1990 LeMans, and the Eagle car line. For this old tech, the Malaise era really ended in the early 1990s. By that time, manufacturers had really begun to fine tune engine management systems and had begun to improve other vehicle systems. IMO, I think the second malaise era is a combination of multiple factors. First, a turnover in the automotive factory workforce. The 2020 pandemic made a lot of older workers strongly consider or in many cases, opting to retire. These older workers took a lot of what is called "tribal knowledge" with them (and sadly, some of them took it to the grave). The second issue is all the technology being shoved into newer cars. I'm sorry, but I think a 12 inch driver information center is too much. And we all remember what that great Starfleet engineer Montgomery Scott told us: "The more you complicate the plumbing, the easier it is to stop up the drain." Fortunately, I dont think were going to end up with sad sack vehicles like the 1975 Corvette, whose standard 350 came with a whopping 165 HP.

@xeutoniumnyborg1192 I didn't say 1985. All sites I looked at all said it's believes to have ended in 1983 or 84. Not just wiki Pedia. I agree with all the combinations of things as well. All by design. Ahhh the fiero. My cousin had one of those. Good times

I'm in the parts business, OEM for the big three. I see it everyday across the board. Factory parts are made with cheap, inferior materials, are defective out of the box, and labor claims have skyrocketed over the last couple of years as a result. On the other side, you've got these scumbags returning used product as defective, so we have to inspect each part coming back. To add even more nonsense to this, the new car market is effectively broken. There are vehicles with 2000 day supply sitting on lots no one is buying because they've priced the middle class out of the market. The banks are done taking risks, the dealers won't come down on price, and the manufacturers are starting to repo from lots. I apparently picked the wrong field 😒

They also retarded the timing in the gearset so the engines ran cleaner at idle. On one of my cars from the 70s, I replaced the timing set to one from a pre-emissions engine. I also rerouted (deleted) some vacuum controls. These made the engine run on manifold vacuum until the engine warmed up. The results were better power and better mileage. If there was cooperation between the automakers and the government with the citizens being a priority, we would have affordable, reliable cars because it's really not a difficult challenge. We only matter because we are the consumers. The idea is to market products that we can just barely afford and if we have to pay the taxes, the banks, the manufacturers, and maintenance, just so we can drive to work then so be it. Its also the fact that the majority of Americans only keep their vehicles for 3-5 years. Trade it in and get a new one hence why they design it to last 100k miles. The new emissions standards are designed to start killing ice engines especially the larger ones and force people to start buying EVs as the government believes that is the future. Although many experts have repeatedly said that an EV has to last 100k before it becomes carbon neutral. Its all about control whether from the manufacturer or the government. BFT i believe you're right on point. Especially with these diesel engines. All diesel engines are really strong and overbuilt, but yet they are all breaking down, dying & falling apart - more likely an emissions problem is stoping them. A diesel shold last 500k miles no problem. Hopefully some stuff is going to change with everything now that Chevron was overturned in the Supreme Court last week. I hope so at least, the EPA has been overstepping for years going after companies, fining them millions & putting them out of business for good just for selling a muffler system. So much for freedom in the US of A! I really hope things seriously change in November cause if not we're gonna be doomed for sure! 👍🏻👌🏻🛠️🔧🔩😄 Ps the word Malaise is pronounced Mal -aze, not mal-ace!

As far as the 1970s-80s vehicles, we used to modify the engines with aftermarket parts to get performance that at least approached the vehicles of the late 1960s ,before the miserable EPA started with their regulations. Although the EPA claimed they had authority over vehicles built from 1968, we regularly gave them the middle finger, deac tivating or blocking off EGR valves with "stealth plates" made from soda cans, gutting or entirely removing "smog pumps" and chopping out catalytic converters with various steel implements and rejetting carburetors or replacing them with more performance oriented ones. The state "emissions testing" was a joke, within days of it starting we knew how to defeat it. When they started failing vehicles for a CEL, we hooked the bulb up to an oil pressure sender which mimicked the correct operation of the light. They were totally clueless . They didnt have the resources, knowledge or manpower to do anything about it, and we knew it. Since most engines of the era were based on 1960s (or in some cases 1950s) designs they were well designed and engineered to begin within most cases, and were time-proven. The idea was to get maximum potential out of them. There were junk parts around even then, we used to avoid Wells electronic components, preferring to source them from NAPA or Big A which at the time supplied quality parts. I refuse to own any vehicle made after 1995, when modifications became more difficult due to increased use of electronic controls which increased complexity and therefore likelihood of failure. New vehicles are expensive failure prone garbage .I repair them for other people...I refuse to buy them

As those of us who are the techs repairing these vehicles, its hard for us to understand why a similar engine platform changes from one year to the next as it relates to emissions. I think the gasoline engine has enjoyed much of a free pass on emissions thanks to catalytic converters being mostly an ubobtrusive device compared to the equipment that was slapped on diesels. I did know that Europe was working on gasoline particulate filters. The techs repairing these things have to have a much greater knowledge of how complicated these engines have become and some techs just don't have it in them. Especially trying to explain that Fords cam phasers change degrees to perform in cylinder EGR operations. Perhaps its time to rethink the fuel that we are using to target emissions. Such as E100 from a renewable source instead of just pushing electrificaiton. I also see older folks spending money on fixing 10+ year old trucks to avoid buying new ones until reliable part supplies from dealers dwindle.

@BeardedFordTech I hate headache days. I suffer from severe migraines. The early 1970s saw the introduction of catalytic converters, exhaust gas recirculation and air injection pumps, also known as smog pumps. Only catalytic converters worked well with carburetors. EGR and smog pumps negatively impacted power and performance. 1984 was the widespread introduction of fuel injection, oxygen sensors, and early engine management computers. Horsepower and performance lost in 1973 was restored and in some cases, exceeded by the new technology. Fuel efficiency also increased. By 1989, carburetors were only to be found on lawn equipment and some Harley-Davidson motorcycles. By 1993, all bikes were fuel injected from the factory.

In 1993, I had a 1977 Ford LTD stationwagon with the 6.6L/400 V8. I had done a lot of my own tuning to the engine. Stock, exhaust flows into the intake manifold from a port on the intake side of both heads, that same port was also used for the smog pump. A passage in the intake went to the carburetor mounting pad, between the mounting pad and the carb is the EGR spacer, to which the vacuum activated EGR valve bolted onto. I could never get that car to pass emissions with the EGR and smog pump working. From the factory, the fuel mixture screws were epoxy sealed, so no air-fuel ratio adjustment could be made. I dismounted the carb to remove the epoxy, flipped the EGR spacer over to block off the EGR passages and cut the drive belt to the smog pump. I then did my own idle and fuel adjustments with the aid of a vacuum gauge, reducing cold idle from 950 rpm to 450 rpm, and then seated both mixture screws, backed them out the same amount, then adjusting both to stalling out, then adding back 1/4 turn to the ratio. Lo! And Behold! That car passed emissions at a tenth of expected levels for CO, NOx, and hydrocarbons. Unfortunately, it failed the equipment check for the smog pump drive belt. I had a spare belt in the car, installed it in the line to get retested, all watched by DOT, passed the equipment check, by failed the hydrocarbons by 20x expected. While still hooked to the sniffer, I shut the car off, cut the belt with DOT watching me, started the engine and had the test rerun. Passed the sniffer test by the same 90% below expected as the first test. On the spot I was granted an equipment waiver for no smog pump. The factory dual catalytic converters worked like champs for the entire 385000 miles the car lasted until the frame cracked at the driver's front torque box on the frame. That engine was later transplanted to another 77 Country Squire wagon and went another 250k before needing a rebuild.

I’ll also add, ALL manufacturers can make every single system on a vehicle reliable IF they wanted to. The choice to make and manufacture poor and inferior parts is a choice of cost savings and planned obsolescence, period. If NASA can send someone to the moon in 1969, during a time when pretty much everything had carburetors then ALL manufacturers have the ability to make turbo charged, gas and diesel, DI, multiple speed automatics, computer driven vehicles last 200-300k miles. Everyone knows about this era they just call it the obd1 and obd2 eras in simple terms cause the obd systems where introduced to regulate smog better along with egr valves and many other things to fix pollution!
@BeardedFordTech
@BeardedFordTech 25 дней назад
@wrightsrrt871 obd wasn't back them. Wasn't rewlly around until 1982. On some vehicles. On-board diagnostics (OBD) I was first introduced in 1991 when the California Air Resources Board (CARB) mandated that all vehicles in the state have some form of basic OBD. OBD I was not standardized across manufacturers and was more basic and less comprehensive than the later OBD II system. OBD I systems typically only monitored emission control systems. OBD I was used in vehicles up to 2006 and most vehicles from 1982 to 1995 are equipped with some type of OBD I. OBD2 was 1996 until present being mandatory. That's why only some 2006 models have obd1.

@BeardedFordTech I know I specialize in automotive electric brother and my dad tought me growing up he was an helicopter crew chief in service and did electrical on those he said it's way more complex what I'm saying is the time of shitty cars as you call it was the same time frame during the 70s when they started the adventure in the government voting on the emissions laws and stuff cause we all know before the obd1 came out in 82 they have all types of planning to do then it came out and personally I think that the time frame for shit cars would have more been from 80 to 94 but that's cause I like the 78-79 Buick regal ,the 70s cutlass and there's many more I could name like Monty Carlo ss! But to each there own opinion. I'm not hating just speaking on the subject and seeing what all think as well! You would probably know better as you seem to have michanic schooling and I'm just an shade tree michanic that grew up in it.

@BeardedFordTech yah I've been in construction my whole life as well and I'm switching to automotive cause I'm tired of the lack in pay for intensive labor vs jobs like burger flopping jobs or even where people stand around and do bar tending or security jobs at the door as an bouncer those jobs have there own stresses but there not physically stressful on the body like cars and construction! And as far as whyckapidia is concerned obd1 was renamed obd2 in the early 90s to eliminate the confusion of that they added more moduals to the systems that had nothing to do with emissions (door maduals and such), where obd1 was strictly emissions based so after the early 90s when it changed it was no longer referred to as obd1 but only as obd 2 and they also changed over to an universal plug across the board where obd1 had different plugs for different cars making it expensive to buy all types of adapter plugs. I'm just confused what company's kept only obd1 up to 2006 I've never heard of this but I'm always learning new stuff and it intrigues me?
@BeardedFordTech

I wouldn’t be so sure that these corporations are going to turn on a government that’s bailed them out in the past. When times are good the shareholders make things better, but when things go south the government makes sure the corporation is taken care of. Corporate execs keep their jobs and even get huge bonuses, while share holders lose everything and have to come out of retirement and get a job, that’s if they can still work… Lobbyists represent the corporation not the shareholders. Shareholders could pressure the corporation to challenge the epa but it would never happen because it wouldn’t make sense for them to and if the shareholders tried to challenge the corporation then the government would step in and protect their investment.

It's worse than you think. Everything is shifting towards EV technology. In the next 10 to 20 years, the gas and diesel industry will be absolutely gone and put into the coffin. California is already headed in that direction. By 2035 the mandate will go into full swing for gas and later diesel.
