A Weckl Lick On A Bebop Kit

Here's a Dave Weckl lick which he plays as part of a fill on the track "Eye of the Beholder" from the Chick Corea Elektric Band album of the same name. The lick lends itself to being played in the jazz style on a bebop sounding kit.
I'm keen to know your thoughts.

Lots of great drummers, fewer good teachers, and even fewer who do both beautifully! You’re one of the rare group. This was wonderful. Thank you!

He's ok. I just don't prefer teachers that teach licks per se. Check out Rudimental Rituals that was originally developed by the Legendary Alan Dawson. It's an insane practice routine to fully develop rudiments. There's several people on RU-vid explaining it.

@@Oneness100 A few “licks” can go a long way when applied musically. Let me mention Steve Gadd, who always plays more or less the same things, but does so in an incredibly musical way. I’d rather call musically applied licks “signature phrases”. That removes some of the negative associations one might have with.. licks.
@Oneness100
@Oneness100 Год назад
@@yongamusic yes, but you don't want it to sound cliche', which is what ends up happening most of the time. Same goes with the Blush Da fill Tony Williams would use. I stayed clear away from that because every drummer other than Tony haven't figured out when and how to use it musically and it just sounds out of place and a cliche'. 🙂

Your vids just recently popped up and I’m liking your edumacation method. You manage to uncomplicate to a level that a medium beginner such as myself can actually execute, albeit at a slower tempo . Another plus : my wife’s 1/2 Italian and there seems to be a gang of excellent drummers ( musicians ) with Italian surnames and first names like “ Vinny “ as well as I’ve always made quick friends with the Ozzys I meet. I’ll be checking out your vids for other education ( edumacation 😊 thank ) lessons. Thankz 😎

Beautiful sounding kit!! The lick is a 3/4 version of Steve Gadd‘s signature Ratamacue: RLR-FLL. The Gadd-Weckl lineage is strong in this one. 😄

Actually when you add the hi hat in 4, the 3/4, sequence should be: hi hat on 2 / 1 / 3 And then back on 2 again and repeat so the high-had foot plays on every other beat every other quarter note that gives the feeling of 4 over 3! Great lesson! Your concept of fitting in Dave Weckl wick in a jazz bebop Concept is brilliant!

Nice Lick, would it be disrespectful to attribute Dave Weckl 'licks' or Bonham, to perhaps, the Artist who played them FIRST (on BEBOP drums), or possibly created them, e.g. Max Roach, definitely "ELVIN", or "TONY" et al.⁉This occurs 'too' often to be a mere oversight, or 🥁🎵and JAZZ🎼 accuracy naivete❗✊🏿💯✊🏿

Darryn, Please help establish a UNIVERSAL COUNTING method for 8th note Triplets as: "1TRIP LET, 2 TRIP LET, 3 TRIP LET, 4 TRIP LET. " Not "1and ah", because that is really, 2eights and 1sixteenth, and when played correctly is a GALLOPING rythm and not a swinging 8th note triplet at all! There are just too many INACCURATE ways being taught to count Triplets and we NEED a UNIVERSAL COUNTING METHOD. When u count, " 1 Trip let, 2 Trip let, 3 Trip let, etc , U will AUTOMATICALLY play 8th note Triplets CORRECTLY with the even spaceing that makes them SWING. Now it's not confusing to a Student when u teach combinations like, " 1 and ah", or "1e and" , or "1e ah". Rite? .
@darrynfarrugia9904
@darrynfarrugia9904 Год назад
The counting method I use for triplets was taught to me by my teacher and does exist in many texts. If you think about it, this method does have a far more legato sound and works great for faster tempo counting. As they say, there’s more than one way to skin a cat! But I do get your point.
