A week in the life with the M4 iPad Pro - Replacing my Macbook Pro 

You know, i use to be against the idea of having MacOS on an iPad but since I use to own an M1 MacBook Air, there are some aspects of it that I do miss. If Apple can’t or won’t port MacOS over to iPad, I think they should at least encourage developers to create MacOS-like apps and software for iPadOS. Maybe Apple can create some sort of “kit” that can make this easier. If Logic Pro, Luma Fusion, and others can create very close MacOS-like software for the iPad, others can do it too. Why they don’t do it can be varied but there’s really no excuse with the power of these new iPad Pros.

I'd say the hardware HAS TO be as good as the MacBook's, given the full iPad Pro combo costs as much as a MacBook Pro (Not the base M3, I'm talking M3 Pro)

@@housepianist Agreed but I just don’t see them porting Mac OS over the iPad. It’s not going to happen sadly but what they can do is to give the iPad OS Mac like functionality. Perhaps a desktop mode.

Haven’t watched this video yet but a buncha tech reviewers including MKBHD have said they’re not upgrading

@@MyOddTv It does but it’s heavily sandboxed. Apps can only save and access files in seemingly arbitrarily made folders for it specifically while others are saved in iCloud. It’s a mess. While it’s great for security it’s simply not enough flexibility for power users who need system level access for their workflows. We need something similar to Finder on Mac or File Explorer on Windows if Apple really wants iPads to takeoff beyond simple note taking and being a glorified Netflix/RU-vid machine. This is all moot though because Apple can’t do any of this without cannibalizing their own Mac sales…

@@kayakdayApple is yet to find a way to scan the files offline for pirated ebooks, pirated songs, pirated videos/movies etc. That is the only way iPad can have great file system. That's the reason why Netflix wont create app for mac. The future of all apps are in iPad or very closed system where piracy is not allowed. But iPad OS can improve a lot just like in the video when he right click his profile photo along with other frustrations with iPad OS

Nah, screw that, go full MacOS on the iPad Pro, you know damn well it could run it, just with a touch layer. If it weren’t for how much spyware by design Windows is ramrodding into every layer of their new surface book and how intrusive CoPilot is I’d be seriously giving them a look. Just give us MacOS with the touch ability and call it a day, Apple.

You can take notes and things on a cheaper iPad. There’s no point in getting the pro to just take notes. That’s why I’m probably getting the air.

Except Apple constantly argues that the iPad Pro is a full computer. It’s fair game. For taking notes, studying, reading, etc., the base iPad or the iPad Air get the job done for far less money. I say this as a 12.9” M1 iPad Pro owner. I love it. I bought it partly because I was curious and I have money to burn. It’s a nice companion to my Mac, but cannot replace it. If you have an actual budget, the iPad Pro is just an odd device (outside of certain uses cases, like if you need it for artwork). I like it as a huge, needlessly expensive iPad that I bought just cause I can. I don’t think it’s the best iPad for the majority of people.

@@wrvpgod2155 I use the IPad for casual and power demanding professional work as well. It’s not just about note taking. There are some use cases out there that are just heavily suited for a touch screen device, it goes without saying that any work that requires pen or pencil input, so for artists, designers, architects etc it can be an integral part of their creation process. Some form of 3D modelling as well, especially very organic modelling can be easier in some situations as well. It may not be a full replacement of a laptop but an additional tool to get good work done in a way that laptop may not fulfil and this comes without mentioning how enjoyable mobile OSs can be at times, even with their limitations. So ultimately, this boils down to the individuals. Know your use case and possibilities that you may want to explore before purchasing a device.

Maybe it’s not suppose to be a direct laptop replacement but if you look at it from an overall usage base, it’s very much a laptop replacement. Too many times, people determine this based on specific software/app usage. Most people who buy iPad Pros are not video editors. Reviewers seem to think that this determines whether an iPad can or cannot be a laptop replacement. With that in mind, what do you call a laptop that someone uses for Netflix and checking email? And what do you call an iPad that is used for video and music editing? Ironically, there are those out there that will use a MacBook as a “tablet replacement” and an iPad as a professional device. Go figure. Here’s another thing to consider. Since most RU-vidrs need “advanced” versions of video editing software, they feel like they cannot recommend the iPad Pro. For who? Other video editors? For other “professional content creators”? What about medical workers? Auto technicians? Professional illustrators? Spreadsheet creators? You can certainly use MacBooks for nearly all those things but you can still be a professional and use an iPad Pro because that can work better than a dedicated laptop. It all depends on the use case, not on professional, jaded video editors who can’t utilize an iPad Pro “fully”. It just seems like video editing is the ‘default profession’ that is used to determine the viability of whether people need one or not. Almost all RU-vid reviewers have this mentality and it just presents a one-sided argument that no one really needs one unless you do something very specific that needs a powerful device. Bottom line - the iPad Pro is a 100% laptop replacement for 95% of other “professionals” that need the convenience (or desire) for one. And I think it’s safe to say that laptops, desktops, tablets, phones, etc, are computers by design and function. I just wish people would stop determining what’s what based on very specific use cases.

I feel like it is an irrational fear. I can’t really see it happening. There are some things like typing on my lap or or on a wobbly service that laptops just do better and the battery life is so much better.

Glad to hear your comments on the nano texture. I looked at it in the store and going to go back and look one more time. My chief concern is the idea that using the pencil may wear the nano texture over time. But in the short time I spent either it, it seemed to create a different experience look wise. I really liked it.

I would recommend an Air. That’s lighter than an iPad and can do a lot more. A MacBook Air can easily do everything you mentioned.

Facts !!

I do image editing in photoshop. That is MUCH easier using my new iPad than it was using a mouse or trackpad. A MacBook wouldn’t do what I need. All the reviewers gloss over the Apple Pencil pro saying, “I’m not and artist but I suppose an artist might like this…” but it isn’t about “like”. It’s the only way to do this short of buying a pricey Wacom cintiq.
