I agree. I have over 200 plants and I have no idea how long it takes to water. I water plants as needed so it is spread out. If I see a dead leaf I cut it off. If something looks buggy I treat. I think the key is looking at your plants anytime you’re in the vicinity.
@wildfern
@wildfern 10 месяцев назад
Yeah I've really learned that when I notice something needs water etc to do it in that moment (if I can) otherwise it gets put off and forgotten about/becomes a bigger problem!
@SnakePlantCollector
@SnakePlantCollector 10 месяцев назад
It takes me 4~5 hours to water 200 plants. It could be better to spread out your watering schedule because watering 4~5 hours on the same day can be painful. But, I still align the watering schedule because it is also convenient since you don't need to monitor your plants every day.

The bathrobe energy could not be more relatable. I'll be doing college work, see a plant out of the corner of my eye and just get up and care for every plant 😭. I always do it after I shower for some reason, it's like a switch flicks in my brain that once I'm cozy I have to just stare at plants for an hour 👁👄👁

I also have 200 plants [high five]. I water on Wed & Sun, taking each plant [that needs it] to the sink to flush n'drain. While it's in the sink I fuss over it, squee about any new leaves, and clean things up. Takes usually 2+ hours but I find it really relaxing, esp on Sunday before a busy week! Plus I like moving around since I have to sit so much during the week.

Loved this video as always! I literally watched it and plant shop on Etsy at the same time…got 4 new plants 😅. I have close to 130 plants and growing…I water several days a week as well. A few here a few there and check everyone really good twice a week on my days off. It’s what makes me happy. My husband loves it…which I guess I’m lucky in that sense. His favorite thing to do as a date night is to go to the big box stores and plant shops to look at plants with me.

About five or six years ago I taught myself to crochet by watching RU-vid videos. I really enjoyed it. I ended up making a queen size blanket for my grandma with like three or four colors in it. I ended up giving up on it because it became hard to continue to get the yarn I was using. It was fun though, but also it made my fingers and wrists sore😢😮😊

I probably have about 200 indoor Tropicals as well, and my favourite, greatest of all time tool I use and will never get rid of is: those little white plastic plant label sticks - I love them. I write the month & day in permanent marker when I water each. This one thing has alleviated 99% of my (non-bug related) plant stress. Now just a glance at the date tells me if I should check the soil. Second best is: Beneficials!!

Fern great video! I don’t think many of us that have 200 plus plants really take into account, just how much time this passion takes in a day. And I don’t do videos and edit. You are amazing juggling all of this. Also most of my collection is well established and needs less fussing, if that makes sense. ( plus I have no freakin moss poles) lol But like one other subscriber said, constant monitoring and pest checking are a big part of a healthy collection. Your Amedriem silver is wow! Nicest one I have seen! Bravo! Loved the long video!

Fern, you have a serious plant maintenance schedule. I have about sixty plants and I'm always looking at leaves, wiping leaves, watering, Pon Treatment weekly, and making sure self-watering plant vessels have fresh water and are clean. Finally, I move all the plants to the windows daily so they can get the required light. I will be looking into beneficial mites this week. I'm on the US side and hopefully, it will not be a major task. I was surprised by how many large varieties you have along with the accelerated growth. Totally amazed at how fast they are sizing up. Best wishes You ✌👋are incredible

I don't have 200 plants but it takes time to keep them. They never all need water at the same time. I watch them through the week and lift their pots and I know who will need water on Saturday. Sometimes I water during the week when I'm on breaks to destress from my job.

My cacti sit with everything else and I'm afraid if you don't water them the whole winter you will only have a hollow shell when spring comes. They need a lot less when they are dormant but they still need some. And some cacti grow in the winter

I do the same thing you do when I water my plants. 😄 I take each to the sink to water them and rinse them off. I enjoy doing it that way. It's almost therapeutic. 😍 Oh! Nice!!! That was so cool of them to send you one. I just got my Paraiso Verde from the local VI Plant Shop just recently. I look forward to seeing how yours grows, and I hope I can keep mine alive *lol*. I've been eyeballing the silver cloud philo off and on on their online shop because they have them in right now. But haven't pulled the trigger and got one of those yet becaaaaause I sorta kinda just litterally spent a bunch online there already. *lol* I bought a Philodendron Tortum, a Monstera 'Esqueleto', Euphorbia Trigona Variegata (which I hope I won't kill), a Dieffenbachia 'Crocodile', a Philodendron 'Snowdrift', and a bunch of other plants I probably shouldn't have bought just yet ((but they all looked sooo pretty) .😄And so am waiting on those to be delivered in the next day or two. I swear I should just sign over my paychecks directly to them at this rate. *lol*

I think I'm at about 100 plants, trying to downsize. What helps me most is being able to water plants in place. I have 95% soil plants. Everything either in cache pots or deep saucers. I couldn't fathom having to bring everything to the sink. My moss poles can be more intense. I have maybe 10? I bring em outside to hose down or if they are still moist I'll use a watering globe, which helps alot. Also, I'm a lazy repotter. I have plants that haven't been upotted going on 3 years😂

The other question I have is do you plant right in pots or keep most plants in planter pots and then place them in cover pots?Im sure you have answered these questions in old videos but I need a little refresher to help me out! You saying that ppl ask how you take care of a large plant collection and you don't know, had me laughing 😂😂 I would say my answer would be pretty similar with 100+ plant collection. I don't have a specific schedule as I water plants when they are dry rather than on a specific day. But I find that watering/taking care of plants multiple times a week helps a lot. Rather than one day a week. More flexibility for the plants🌿🌱🌿 Just wanted to share for anyone starting out or building a big collection. This is how I have kept my plants very happy💚

FYI: I learned that ( in my experience) thrips attack cactuses that have padded or flat shaped leaves, ones that don’t have a lot of spikes. Ones that are fuzzy, prickly, thorny, etc, they usually leave them alone. The euphorbia ghost (I think that’s what it’s called, lol), is just barking. If it was fungal it would be moldy, rotting, etc. If those signs happen I recommend a equisetum/horsetail fungicide solution, you would just mix it with one part warm water and little bit of the solution(I just eyeball it) it should start to crystallize the fungal and you would remove it once it has crystallized. Hope that helps❤ P.S if u have anymore questions just respond on this comment and I’ll usually respond back pretty quick.

Hello! Cacti and succulent collector here. My understanding of overwintering is it's about temperature regulation and keeping dry. They still need plenty of light. I would pop my cacti on the table directly in front of the window (sans camping equipment, hehe). Good luck :)

I live in Eastern Ontario and have to agree with you when it comes to putting plants out for the summer. Never again... did it one year and the gnat issue in my soil was unbelievable 😳 Most of our plants are in PON now so not having issues anymore but wholly that one year was so stressful. A few even died 😢😢😢😢😢😢😢

Yeah, until I get my patio enclosed, all of my plants are staying in the house. I like the idea of putting them outside for more sun and humidity, but I hate the reality of pests.😅 I can’t imagine how stressful it must have been, dealing with so many gnats, transitioning to pon, losing plants-all the while having a life beyond plants. Glad you got it under control.^^

I'm 80 plants in on a 400sq foot apartment. It's pretty much of part-time job taking care of 'em.

I suppose there’s a good reason for it but why don’t you use a really high pot to put the whole anthurium in instead of using a pot that is too low and extend it? I find that plastic garden pots that were used for climbing plants work great. You can often get them for free at the garden centre because they otherwise throw them away
@wildfern
@wildfern 10 месяцев назад
You totally could :) I just haven’t come across anything the right height that I’d be looking for, especially not in a clear version like I prefer. The extenders are especially handy for when the plant itself doesn’t need a repot, but you want to add height to cover the higher roots as the plant grows. Hope that helps x

If you want your paraiso to look and grow amazing, stick it on a moss pole NOW and get it in a south facing window. They are temperature dependent but the ambient temperature doesn’t have to be “hot,” the developing leaf just needs to experience warm temps. Anything lower than 70°F/20°C will result in no mottling. 70-80 (20-25) will give you decent mottling. But temps above 80°F/25°C will make them come out that beautiful light green/minty cream color. 🤤 and they size up FAST.

I've noticed with my hoya, if they are on a hoop trellis they don't get enough light at the base of the plant. You need to jack them up on something so that the barrina lights can get to them. And THRIPS can go on any plant. With my lovely summer with these devil bugs, I found them on my snake plants. They didn't do damage but I still treated every single plant in my collection. I suggest with your trailing jade, remove her from pot, rinse in bath tub under facet and repot with fresh soil.
@wildfern
@wildfern 10 месяцев назад
Ohhh I never thought about that being a problem with hoop trellises. I think it was definitely too far from the grow light - the poor thing! Thanks so much, repotting is a good idea for her.

Same thing happened to my hoya eliptica, it was doing so well under those lights that she grew long so I decided to put it on a hoop trellis and she went down hill and sure enough it started to rot. Took it off the trellis, took insurance cuttings inspected the roots (not completely rotted but was starting) cut the dead parts and re potted her up and placed her closer to the grow light. It's growing like a weed again. Your welcome.
