Feels great to be back into feature work after that month of bug fixes! Just wanted to drop in and say thanks for all the support y'all have shown for the channel over the past year. It's a privilege to be able to share this content with so many passionate people, and I'm excited to keep it going in 2023! Hope everyone has a wonderful and safe holiday.

I think you should have an exclamation point pop out above the fish when you get close, then swim away when you get closer. That way the player doesn't get confused and think fish just swim away. But instead they get alerted before leaving. Maybe a small spook meter or something.

A concept for the reeling minigame; some form of real time event, requiring the player to click bubbles when an outer ring around said bubbles is around the original bubble. Harder fish could require either more bubbles or have faster ring shrinking times. Easy enough to do with one hand, while keeping the player engaged in the moment. Thanks for the awesome videos!

While I don't have a specific game recommendation, as far as fishing features go, I think with the system that you're creating as far as an extensive tackle box and different types of bait would benefit a lot from making each feel impactful and unique. Rather than a few percentage points higher reel speed or something, giving each one different categories of fish they're more proficient at catching, maybe expanding the lure radius so more fish come by, making the fish have unique shadows so players can search for a specific one they might need, and so on will motivate players to add all of the different versions to their collection log and try out each unique upgrade. Another option so it may not feel as overwhelming to players is to narrow down the number of options but make each lure upgradable with items, maybe give them durability that they eventually break but can be repaired using collectables so people are encouraged to engage in multiple aspects of the game. Still love this series and really looking forward to playing when it comes out!

Always loved the mechanic in ToonTown how fishing required bait, which was jellybeans, which were also your currency, and you could only carry I think around 40 at the start of the game. I think one of the big issues fishing minigames have is their repetition - you're always casting a line and reeling it in. I think adding some more variety to the gameplay loop might make it a bit more interesting - things like being able to put different kinds of bait, different hook sizes and types, different lures. Then have different fish spawning at different levels or different depths or different areas, attracted to different things. Have some fish rarer than others. Have non-fish items you can reel in, litter and pollution etc (perhaps affected / decreases by player action). Always loved the Club Penguin fishing minigame that was filled with hazards for you to avoid or else you lose the line + the fish - they had crabs cutting the line or jellyfish to shock you.

Great update. Was just gonna share that so far my favorite fishing mechanic in a game has come from My Time at Portia. Basically you try to keep a target focused on the fish as it swims back and forth. If you're off target, tension is added, and if you're on target tension is slowly alleviated. You can reel at any point. Reeling on target still increases tension, but reeling off target adds a ton of tension. If at any point you go over tension limit, line snaps and fish is gone. If you reel enough without snapping, you catch it. Different fish have different swimming patterns which you have to learn to stay on target, and some fish add a lot of tension when reeling and others not so much.

I would say for the feel of dauphin so far something similar to Stardew Valley's fishing system with your own twist on it would be super cool. You had some clips of Runescape's fishing mechanic and while I do love Runescape and have spent many hours fishing in it I think that sort of skilling would be a bit to monotonous and grindy for this sort of game. Love the progress you've made so far super inspiring!

Great and relaxing devlog, as always. One thing that I noticed is though reeling in and jiggling the bait do two different things, they are visibly identical, which could cause the player some confusion. If jiggling the bait is only intended to bring it towards the player without a perpendicular component, perhaps it is better just as one input. Regarding interactive fishing systems, I can't think of any that weren't fundamental to the game (Subnautica and those arcade-style fishing games). On the other hand, I can think of some games with boring/repetitive fishing: Minecraft and Wizards 101 come to mind. (Wizard 101 had a great system, I just felt like I had to grind it to the point of boredom). The main problem with fishing is that, in itself, it is a non-intensive, repetitive task, which some players would always find boring (not that this game is designed by any means with those players in mind). Therefore, the interest in fishing has to come from the player. Forcing the player to fish a bit here and there for a quest is fine, but the player should never feel like they are forced to fish, especially for a long time. This is why fishing in Minecraft is so boring: most players fish strictly to obtain rare drops like enchantments or saddles, the latter being very difficult to find otherwise, so players are basically forced to fish if they want to ride a horse. (This is not to say that rare or exclusive drops are bad, but they shouldn't gatekeep features or be without an equivalent alternative if the player wants to do something else-- Temmie Armor in Undertale is an example to avoid because it is unequivalently the best armor available to the player at the time, so the player feels like they have to grind the grind for it). Because of this, I think your current fishing system is great: >The point of fishing is fishing for fish, not rare drops, so the player is often feeling rewarded. >You can tell what fish are near the hook, so you aren't stuck fishing for a while based on RNG (as long as the player isn't circling the island waiting for the fish they want to spawn). >The rods are extremely customizable, which gives the player a greater sense of control than in Minecraft. (Perhaps you could make this more visual when fishing-- changing the line or bait color or something to remind them that they chose this combination that is having a direct impact on their success). Just never force an unwilling player to fish for a long time with this system because they will always see fishing as find fish, cast, reel, cast, reel, find fish, cast, reel, etc. [I am by no means a professional game designer, and everything I said was based off of personal experience and perhaps a few RU-vid videos here and there, so take everything I said with a grain of salt.]

Hey mate I also make games in Godot 4, I enjoy watching your dev logs and it has been great to see you embrace Godot 4, I recently just finished coding a PhysicsServer2D and RenderingServer system for all my enemies in game, I can spawn up to 3000 rigid bodies with physics! You probably don't need to do that with this game but it's quite a powerful tool that can give you a massive FPS boost in regards to many enemies/objects spawned!

Not sure if you've got any story going but I recall a video about your boat and travel between islands. I wonder if the corruption is being brought from a "large" island and you start on a small one. Even cleaning up the island completely won't prevent it because you can see in the water a line of corruption heading off into the distance, this could be a path to another island (or multiple lines from multiple islands). Eventually, it'll lead you to this main landmass that is the source of all corruption (whatever that is). Since this allows you an idea of where the islands are without much "exploration" you could have secrets slightly outside the paths, like underwater caves you could explore for more/stronger purification powers. Maybe you said this or I read this somewhere, it's been a long year so I apologize if I did take this somewhere. Great job on the upgrade and looking forward to more progress! Happy holidays.

I'm not sure how Godot works (I use unity), but I think it would be a good idea to see if you could make a mask for your water layer. If you could somehow make a layer that masks all water based sprites to only be seen on / above the water you could make it so the fishing ripples and the players feet when in the water, would only show those visuals when actually overtop of that water layer / mask. Again, not sure if this is actually possible or the right approach in Godot, but thought it would really clean up the look and sell the feel of water being water and not just a looped sprite! Great work on the fishing system and Merry Christmas!

Three fishing mechanics immediately coming to my mind: - **The Elder Scrolls Online** has a simplified mini game. You don't have to do anything specific, except activating a fishing node, then hitting your Reel In shortcut key the moment your line starts to wiggle. If you take too long, it will snap. - **The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening (mini game):** Link throws the bait depending on how long you hold down the button. Then button presses will reel in the bait a tiny bit, generating movement and attract fish. It's essentially a button masher. - **NieR Replicant:** You have to reel in the fish when it's not pulling, but you also have to make sure to steer the gamepad stick in the right direction, which is indicated by different strength of force feedback. It's a creative middle-way between just button mashing and timing/aiming minigames.

One of the games I like fishing in is Wizard101. It's not complicated, just cast your line and wait for a bite, but the sheer variety of fish there are is really cool. The sound design is something I would really like to point out. When trying to catch a fish, a sound is played every time the fish nibbles. Kind of a *kerplunk*. When the fish bites for real, and the lure dips under the surface, you get a slightly different sound *plus* a higher pitched sound. Depending on the power of your computer, the visuals and audio can often get desynced. But because of that extra little sound for a true bite, you can just listen for that instead watching for the bobber to go down. There are a lot of hidden stats too that make things a bit more interesting than just cast, catch, cast, catch. I'd recommend watching a video on it for the hidden stats or trying it out in game, since you can get to fishing without needing to pay to play.

Fishing in Link's awakening redux should be a good inspiration, the thing that lack to your fishing mechanic is that you don't see what you're fishing, having a sort of visualization (or at least the choice of having one) where you can sort of target what fish to take (and maybe powerup or anything of that type) would make it very fun :)

normal fish could be an easy only bait at the right place and reel in but you could have some lengendary fish that need a tug of war with your awsd quick reel, (like a series of QTE) so when you want to drink you coffee and fish relax you can but some fish(that could glow) could be harder to catch and would need more concentration so the mini game still stay interesting. I enjoy fishing in terraria. It isn't as much of a minigame as you are aiming for, but one of the things which make it enjoyable to spend idle time on a relatively mundane task is there exist buffs that allow you to see what you have hooked before reeling it in, so you don't waste time or bait reeling in fish or treasures you have no use for.
