Interestingly enough, Poltava has a place in both Swedish and Finnish history, and is known in both countries from the Battle of Poltava (1709), when a large Swedish-Finnish army was defeated. This battle eventually led to the downfall of Sweden as a major European power. In swedish we also have a saying that goes like this: "Varje man måste gå igenom sitt eget Poltava", which translates to "Every man has to go through his own Poltava". This saying indicates that every man will at some point in life go through some enormous difficulties, such as the great defeat of the battle of Poltava. The only way to overcome this is to accept that life is not always easy, since everyone will face major setbacks at some point. The point is not to avoid setbacks, but to accept them as part of life, and thus, come through honorarly. SLAVA UKRAINI!

I understand that Ukrainian is a hard language to learn (I’m trying) but I would appreciate watching you attempt constructing Ukrainian phrases when the people you speak to have worse English than you have Ukrainian. I am enjoying this video. As much or more than a Rick Steves video. Слава Україні

In this adventurous episode Johnny almost misses a train which compels him to resort to only buying water for breakfast. In Poltava he indulges in a nearby spa hotel, in a company of a mystery friend who leaves shortly after, for mysterious reasons. Later he realizes that some facilities of the resort town are open to outside guests, which greatly displeases him.

Greetings from Poltava region! Johnny, we appreciate your attempts to learn a language, please start from alphabet first😂 cafe’s name was not the first time your misunderstood because of misreading. Please check letters з, е, є ( z, e, ie/‘e). You should not pronounce «e» softly in Ukrainian , the soft one is «є». 3(three) is z, it’s consonant. Wish you good luck!

Well done Johnny for your videos. I live in Nigeria and I want to know the average day to day life in Ukraine cause news is all about propaganda. I like that for once Western News are spot on about something (which is this war) as I see from your vlogs and your videos show the resilience and pride of the Ukrainian people. If only other countries can learn from this. Slava Ukrainians PS: Johnny if you can comment can you tell me which areas in Ukraine speak Russian and which areas speak Ukrainian cause according to what I read on one site Kyiv and other Eastern and Central cities speak good Russian but poor Ukrainian. So is Ukrainian just a western Ukraine language. If you are Ukrainian you can answer as well
@АлександрИванович-ы9т
It's a bit more complicated than that west/east segmentation. One of the major factors is the rural vs urban population. Peoples in villages are less mobile, and save their traditions and language (many generations live in the same village or town), otherwise, city dwellers should be in trend, consume metropolitan culture, and depend on the current capital or regime. Big cities are more uniform and villages are more diverse and conservative. Also, the language is not uniform and slightly changes in every village and every mile. Formal Ukrainian language based on dialects of Central Ukraine (including Poltava from the video). And West or Nord or East has differences in language and special words. But the formal language is something in the geographical middle of the country.

According to the latest surveys, now over 80% of Ukrainians consider Ukrainian their native language and speak it. Previously russian speakers are now changing to Ukrainian EVERYWHERE in Ukraine ..For ex, in Kyiv, only about 12% of people choose russian. Yes, everobody might understand ru but at this point, russian really hurts my ears and I bet I;m not the only one

22:43 the answer is that in Ukraine it is hard to send money without sms confirmation. And even then system can detect suspicious transactions and block it until personal confirmation. On the other hand, if you a rightfull owner of bank acount it is easy to send money to anyone just in few clicks. so i guees banks had to apply all automatic security measures in order to prevent pain in their asses
