Otherwise they'd just plate or clad other Metals for power lines vs expensive copper. They sometimes use aluminum but never for houses business etc. As they once did and discovered the al actually gains tension aka shrinking w voltage over time. Loosening from fixtures. You can plan around it to a degree like larger wire means less shrinking per volt. But it's still a copper is king kind of industry. Notice the ground cables aren't ever copper on power lines. Assuming breathing acetone fumes all day is a side effect you enjoy this is actually much safer than burning candles in a cardboard box. The hot copper is catalysing oxidation but with no open flame. @SilntObsvr
@SilntObsvr 11 месяцев назад
@@TimothyEBaldwin Copper plated steel at least won't melt before it gets red hot. It seems like it ought to work, but how long the plating will last is the question. Copper plating is typically thin (cheaper that way), and the oxide that forms at high temperature isn't as well bonded to the base metal as the plating is; eventually the plating will be fully oxidized and will flake off, leaving you with (rusty, by that time) steel that won't catalyze the acetone oxidation.

"ACUTE TOXIC" That's how the National Library of Medicine describes ketene, which is a byproduct of the acetone-copper catalysis. For EACH molecule of acetone, you end up with TWO ketene molecules and TWO methane molecules. Cool reaction, but you may want to perform it under a hood. After the ketene and methane molecules are created, the reaction continues some more. The net result, after all is finished, is that one acetone molecule catalyzes with copper to create ONE ketene molecule and ONE methane molecule.

Why not just do in it a well vented area and not hover your face over it? Everyone knows some type of fumes happens when heating anything up let alone heat and something that is already not good for us as it is. Then again, too much of anything is bad for us.
@YaGottaBeKidding
@YaGottaBeKidding 6 месяцев назад
@@OneAndOnlyZekePolaris One-half of a drop of acetone catalyzed with copper inside of a two-person tent is considered by the CDC to be "Immediately Dangerous to Life and Health". Toxic doesn't mean "it's not good for you", it means that every bit of it tries to kill you. If you operate such a "stove" with ventilation sufficient to be safe, then you won't be able to derive any benefit from the stove aside from direct radiation; you can't heat a tent or the like. Of course, do what you wish, but you may want to look into it a little more deeply before deciding that your rationalization is a closer reflection of reality than the warnings of the NIH (who operate the NLM) indicate. To reinforce the danger of ketene, consider that the currently accepted level of ketene concentration considered to be Immediately Dangerous to Life and Health (IDLH), according to the CDC, is 5 parts per million. That level would be reached if you were to catalyze one-seventh of a gram (0.1429 g) of acetone inside of a 4x4.5x7 foot tent; the whole penny would likely be disastrous to anyone in that space. This works out to about a half-drop of acetone conversion causing an IDLH event. I don't know the mechanism of action of ketene upon the body, but I'll take the expert's opinions regarding exposure and toxicity.

The reaction products are toxic by inhalation. The copper surface of the hot penny catalyzes the oxidation of acetone. Hot copper reacts with oxygen in the air to produce a coating of copper oxide, CuO. Once formed, the copper oxide reacts with acetone, producing ketene and methane and regenerating copper metal. "Oxidizing the acetone" translated into plain English: Is burning the acetone vapors. Acetone evaporates quickly (this is why it feels cold when you pour in on yourself) and a low flash point (burns easily).
@isaiahh3754
@isaiahh3754 11 месяцев назад
No it isn't. "Burning" the vapours yields primarily Ketene. What is actually occurring is Cu-Catalyzed *oxidation* of the vapours, which yields Methanol, CO2, Formaldehyde, Acetic Acid, Formic Acid, and Methyl Glyoxal.

Similar reactions catalysed by platinum and other precious metals are the basis for the catalytic converters that are used to reduce pollution from cars. The catalytic converter has a ceramic honeycomb inside that is coated in a thin layer of platinum particles, when hot exhaust from the engine containing unburnt fuel and oxygen flows through the converter the platinum catalyses oxidation of the unburnt fuel, converting it to relatively harmless CO2 and water. We don't use copper for this because it oxidises in the air and would become ineffective over time.
