It was a very windy day when the five of us went for the La Perouse to Cape Banks Circuit Walk in Kamay Botany Bay National Park. After the walk, we found out from the news that the wind gust was so strong that flights were delayed and one of the LRT trams was blown off track. Thankfully we completed the walk safely.
Wind aside, this is one of the most beautiful coastal walks in Sydney and it’s located very close to the heart of the city. Another plus factor is, it’s a very easy and mostly flat walk without much elevation. We began our walk from La Perouse entrance to the Kamay Botany Bay NP where there’s a signage for walking track.
The highlights of the track is:
1. Browns Rock
2. Henry Head
3. Cruwee Cove
4. Cape Banks
The walk back from Browns Rock is the only one that has a short distance of uphill walk. Other than that, most of it was quite flat. Even though it was so windy and the sea water was choppy, we still saw some people fishing at Browns Rock.
Standing at the top of Henry Head gave us a spectacular view over the vast expanse of the ocean and dramatic coastal cliffs. There’s also a military fortification sitting on top of the headland.
Once we descended onto Cruwee Cove, we felt more sheltered from the strong wind. In Summer, it would be delightful to have a swim here and to explore the little rock pools.
We passed by a Golf Course and crossed a pedestrian bridge before reaching over to Cape Banks. Since this place is more open to the ocean, it felt like the gale-force wind was blowing us away. This place would be perfect for Humpback whales spotting in the winter months on a calmer day.
We didn’t feel safe to stay long at Cape Banks due to the strong wind and decided to continue our walk back. We ended our walk watching the beautiful sunset at Congwong Beach overlooking the Bare Island fort.
We surely would be back for this walk on a calmer day to enjoy the fabulous coastal views and for whales spotting. Thank you very much to Frank for navigating the windy day walk.
