Tim Keller sermons via Gospel in Life: The gospel of Jesus Christ transcends cultural and socioeconomic differences. Here we have three examples of conversions in Philippi: of the religious, the oppressed, and the secular. The gospel is presented through rational discourse, a power encounter, and through practical embodiment of a gospel-changed life. The message of Christ liberates and transforms lives, and unites people who once had nothing in common into one family.

The story about the gentile jailer really spoke to me. I had many evils done to me by my enemies and people who were called my friends. Instead of repaying evil for evil we can show forbearance through suffering with acts of kindness. That is how Paul won this guy over. His nature had been changed.

The Early Church initially grew mostly in urbanized and pluralistic areas for the first two centuries with the rural areas largely being more ignorant of it and rejecting such for traditional religions and the military not being a popular place for it. It preached to a very diverse range of people from different walks of life and was seen as a universalizing religion reaching out to everyone while also seeking social changes; and economic & political freedoms. In a way, such message might even have more relevance than ever for mord people as a greater percentage of the world population migrates towards cities and suburban areas become more like cities than ever before. The challenge and calling to minister to different people with not just preaching but with life choices should be embraced by all Christians. Timothy Keller points out how Acts 16 is an example of just three converts to Christianity in the Early Church but also how they demonstrate the diversity of Christianity penetrating into different backgrounds & lifestyles along with how they changed many lives. Christianity was about radically bringing different people together rather than separating them; and about actually letting it impact all of their lives. It's also a powerful reminder of how we are to minister to all people with not just preaching the Gospel but our actions and willingness to invest in different lives. The Early Church definitely saw doctrinal belief and accepting the historical truth of Jesus physically being Resurrected from the dead as crucial with the Gospel not being about social justice fundamentally. But they realized that social justice along with economic & political freedoms were important in spreading the Gospel and the more important yet obvious truth of how believers weren't placed here just to enjoy life but rather to try in making Jesus Christ their Lord of all aspects of our lives. Many people in Western societies have a conception that Jesus Christ can only be their Savior while the Bible makes it clear that He must be both Lord and Savior; and Jesus makes explicit statements that serving Him is a very explicit and narrow path with radical implications. Such doesn't mean that those who accept Jesus as Lord and Savior will live even perfectly w/ such people even being capable of the worst. But truly accepting Jesus as Lord and Savior definitely leads to radical transformations.

There is complete freedom in Jesus Christ. I do love your understanding and interpretation of the gospel. There is no fear in Christ because we fear God. Religion allows for a relationship with our savior since it sets rules of respect and kindness. Religion seen in the context of strictly obeying the law is beyond us but fasting with prayer makes the prayer more meaningful. False prayer disguised as religion has nothing to do with the truth.
