This was years ago now ... My great-aunt had developed an ear infection from going too deep while cleaning her ears with cotton swabs. She was given antibiotics and ear drops. She said the ear drops hurt but the doc insisted she use them. A week later my grandma had found her delirious with a fever. At the hospital, they did a CT and found she had developed an abscess in her ear - when she used the ear drops, it pushed the infection and abscess so that it eventually reached her brain. By the time they discovered this, it was too late and she died a few days later. Miss you, Aunt Aggie ❤️

My father actually had an ear pain problem, when he met a doctor he told him that this was caused by cotton sawbs. Crimson Epitaph you don’t (the ears clean themselves as ear wax gradually dries and falls out) , or you can use hydrogen peroxide or other substances that dissolve the earwax. With a lot of these you put them in your ear then gently wash out your ear to clear them. This is what my doctor told me btw

I find this very interesting. I was raised by my grandmother. Every evening I was put in a steaming bath. After I got out of the bath, she always gently dried my ears with a cotton swab. Then she always put a drop of sunflower oil on a cotton swab, that was the finishing touch. She did this day in, day out. I have continued to do this myself, also with my children. Guess what? I have NEVER had an ear infection/complaints around my ears. And neither do any other family members/children! When I broke my nose once, at the age of 42, I had to see a neurologist. My ears were also checked during the examination. The neurologist said my ear canal looked extremely healthy. Clean, and the tissue looked like that of a newborn baby. So, I'm always surprised when people say that you shouldn't clean your ears too often, especially not with a cotton swab. That, while so many people suffer from ear complaints, and they state that they rarely clean their ears because the doctor has told them that this is bad. 😱

I'm 54, will be 55 in June, I have cleaned my ears with a cotton swab since I was at least in my teens, and I have never had an infection in my ears since, but, when I was a small child, I had lots of ear infections, and no one cleaned my ears with a cotton swab! And every doctor I have ever seen, checks my ears, and finds nothing wrong, and I hear better then most people I know, including people in their 20s and 30s! All those who I know to have problems with their ears, don't clean their ears with swabs or anything really, they also love to listen to music full blast too, which is a much bigger problem for most people then cotton swabs! I have never listened to music or tv or anything too loud, and I guess that is why I have no hearing problems, that and because I do clean my ears with a cotton swab, I don't have a huge build up of wax, like most people I know, lol!

It doesn’t matter how deep you shove the q-tip. They are designed to clean the “shell” of the ear, not the inside of the ear. The q-tip simple shoves more and more ear wax deeper and deeper until it blocks it entirely, or causes an infection.

A few years ago I learned this the hard way. I began to have issues with my left ear. First it kept "clogging" up multiple times a day so I was swabbing more. Then I couldn't hear anything out of it at all and pretty soon after that it began causing intense pain. I didn't have insurance at the time (still don't, funny enough) and was trying everything in the book to clear my ear out. Eventually I was forced to go to the emergency room and they had to use a kind of nettipot type thing to spray a jet of liquids in the ear. What it cleared out was... Absolutely disgusting. Doctor confirmed ear swabbing is not good. Haven't used one since.

My doctor tried that but my vertigo got set off so I had to go to and ENT to get my ears vacuumed clean. It was loud and painful but worth it in the end. It was a recurring problem every winter though so now I use earwax softener once a week when the weather gets dry so that I don’t get build up again.

I remember during 2020 getting a double ear infection. both of my ear canals were literally swollen shut and I had to have wicks in to allow the ear drops to go through. I could hardly hear anything. And then on top of that, I got the flu. I had to stay home for an entire week. It was so freaking awful. I'm just glad I didn't go through what these people went through though. Edit: I usually get ear infections because my ears don't self-clean, so ear wax builds up and stores water if I don't cover them if I go swimming. Luckily, I haven't had the need to cover them when I'm taking a shower though!

I clean my ears every time I take a shower. So basically around 3-4 times a week. I have eczema and taking a shower every day dries my skin out and such. The technique I use to clean my ears with a cotton swab is carefully and slowly inserting it into my ear as deep as comfortable. Then slowly twisting and pulling it out. I try to not touch the sides of my inner ear with the cotton swab during insertion due to the potential for jamming ear wax deeper in. I have been doing this for roughly 14-15 years and I haven't suffered any ill effects as of yet. Also I only clean my ears out because if I don't my ears get super itchy.

I used to get ear infections until I started using cotton swabs to clear out moisture and wax after showering daily. Anecdotally, I had to go 3 days without swabs a couple of months ago (thanks coronavirus!) and I ended up having pain in my ear and some mild (though temporary) hearing loss. The pain lasted about 2 weeks before subsiding. I'm no doctor, so do not go putting things in your ear that explicitly say "Don't stick this in your ear!" My case may be special, coincidental, or a necrotizing disaster waiting to happen. Nonetheless, I still credit off-brand (though still high quality) cotton swabs for keeping my ear canals healthy.

I‘m like that as well. The moisture inside my ears after showering or bathing feels awful and can make them hurt. I dry them not by recklessly and brutally swiping around wildy. You gently touch the skin inside in several places. No prodding, no swiping. It works.

8:09 I actually experienced it and you can hear the water going in your ear canal, then the Doc says to tilt your head right/left (depending on what ear is getting cleaned) and your earwax will pop off. My ear wax came out like a ball. After, they kinda dry the outside of the ear. You can barely hear, everything is muffled due to some of the water there. The muffle-ness goes away in an hour or twenty minutes.

My mom has eczema in one of her ears and needs to be irrigated at home (no cotton swabs used); sometimes it messes with her equilibrium a bit, which makes her nauseous, but that's helped by using the correct temperature of water and not flushing it *too* hard. In the end, once her ears dry and equilibrium comes back, it feels a lot better.

I impacted both of my ears using qtips once. Had hearing loss, bad ear pain and ringing for a week before I got them professionally cleaned. Wasn't pleasant but I immediately felt way better. I always thought i was being careful with the qtips too. Never use those things for your ears people

@PsychologyStud If you're just using them to scratch around the entrance to your ear canal, that's fine. Just don't go rooting around in the ear canal like you're digging for treasure. I struggle with this myself from time to time, so I know just how good that scratch can feel. As a blanket state statement, most people don't really need to clean out their ears beyond using a wash cloth or something wrapped around their pinky finger to give a light scrub to the folds around the ear lobe. There are exceptions to this, but usually only for people whose ears produce an absolutely excessive amount of earwax.

@rblxcity-lf2qo I have that conversation with people at least once a week. I'll tell them it says not to stick these in your ears SOMEWHERE on that box. They don't believe me because "Of course thats what they're for." So I give them a homework assignment: pull out that box of cotton swabs and read every word on the outside of the box when they get home that night. And wouldn't you known it? I haven't had one yet come back and say that the warning wasn't right where I said it would be.

My father and I have a sort of bad relationship with our ears. Our ears somehow naturally produce more earwax than usual, which meant more cleansing is required. I used to use cotton swabs (so bad, i know) and didn't realise this was bad until I had to go to the doctor one day for pain in my right ear which just would not go away, along with diminished hearing. Basically telltale signs of an ear infection and/or blockage. I wish I'd taken better care of my poor ear canal, because having that blockage cleaned out via irrigation was like ripping off a scab, it was so painful. Never again will use a cotton swab to cleanse my ears.

"BUT" Im only doing it about once every 2 weeks or a month, and I don't like pressing to hard and going too deep while using it so I just spin it around inside my ear. Edit: I don't know how to say it, but it's not really inside my ear, it's on the outside but on the inside on the same time. How do I put it into words..

I clean my ears daily (only externally) with towels and never clean the ear canal, but when I don't do that for a long time (even months) I start to feel one of my ears muffled because of too much wax, in that case I use a spray made of sea water to clean both my ears, am I still at risk of getting some sort of infection? for YEARS i would go through weeklong periods where i just couldnt hear anything out of my ears. i would shove a cotton swab in there, extract a glob of wax, and then go back in with far too much vigor and make it worse. It's honestly a miracle i didnt permanently deafen myself. eventually my mom insisted i go and get the wax cleaned (i was 20 at the time, i had been living with random onset deafness my whole life) and the first thing i remember is being stunned at how loud I talked after i got it done. i must have been shouting at people for 20 years without knowing. dont shove cotton swabs in your ears people.

I had the ear irrigation done on me. It was not at all uncomfortable. The best thing I have experienced in a hospital. It feels like an itch being scratched. They used lukewarm water and it felt crazy good. Oh and the satisfaction of seeing dirt come out was phenomenal. I felt I was reborn. I've talked to other people who've done it and they said the same thing.

Same. I use Clotrimazole (an antifungal cream) mixed with an antibiotic ointment (a store brand Polysporin knock off) on a q-tip and rub that around my ear canal. Stops the itching and resulting infections. They can shove their "don't put q-tips in your ears, derp", they don't know how goooooood this feels to use them as a scratching relief, right?! Do this though a couple of times a day and your ears will thank you for it and you'll use less q-tips ultimately too, itchy eared friend. The reason for the antifungal is simple, it's an old Doctor's rule of thumb, if it itches, it's likely a fungus, if it burns it's likely bacterial. The antifungal cream will take away the itching, but adding an antibiotic ointment helps the effect last longer and kills even more itching. The antifungl Chlortrimazole is fine on it's own though. I only mix them when it is really bad.

If anyone, myself included ever ran into a problem with it, I would just eliminate the antibiotic ointment addition. As the Chlortrimazole antifungal cream is usually enough to quell the itching in ears quite well and the antibacterial ointment is actually not necessary.
