A ghost story from the POV of the ghosts. They don't know they are dead. They only see what they want to see. Icy dead people are cold blooded and hard hearted, you know, because they are frozen..
One thing no one mentions is how gorgeously filmed this movie is. It relies so much of an eerie atmosphere that is what makes it unsettling. Yet at the same time, the cinematography, the use of darkness, the production setting, colour tone, period setting makes it beautiful to watch.
Agreed. It reminds me of The Innocents with Deborah Kerr. No blood and gore, no monsters, just left to your imagination - and your imagination is stronger than any special effects.
My second favorite horror/supernatural film, of all time. If you need an example of a film, without all of the gore/violence, this is it. This is storytelling at its best.
Not really underrated... it's constantly brought up as one of the best horror films with a "twist". The only issue is it was released too close to The Sixth Sense
The reason(s) for so many remakes have long been with us, but have only worsened with time: money. That is, money for the writers, who have for many years been the *last* to get an upgrade in pay. Why bust your brains coming up with good original concepts (or even adapting truly good material from literary sources) and getting paid crap, when you can recycle old material and make the same amount (or more) for less time and effort spent? Then there's the original pitch of new material, for which you may or may not get paid a proper fee; your original "treatment" may be bought, but you may be cut off short and the actual development be turned over to hacks (either talentless shills or directors who may simply lack talent as writers, whether or not they are good at directing); producers who think they know better than the creator of a popular or influential work when it comes to adapting or developing it for the screen, etc., etc., etc. Look into the numerous strikes by writers over the years, and you'll find all these present... and generally they get AT BEST a pittance of a raise in rates, while all the other departments get 2-3 times (at least) their previous rate. Which is how we ended up with those atrociously bad "reality tv" shows and the like as well. And this has been going on quite literally for more than half a century.....
@@ishtarian Another reason is a built in audience... if people liked a movie, then they'll probably watch the remake, or they don't like 'old' films, but with book to movies, they now have a 'modern' option.
Excellent movie.Nicole Kidman is great.I didn't expect the ending at all.Christopher Eccleston was haunting as the husband whose spirit somehow finds its way to his family, briefly, before it moves on.
This was a great movie, still is but when it came out it was really awesome. Nicole Kidman is one of my favorite actresses of all time and she didn’t disappoint in this movie, the others. It was just one of those movies that highlights just how good an actor or actress is. Being beautiful is just a bonus with her, her talent out shines that too.
I have a 125 year old house with three ghosts in it. A young girl, maybe 8 or so that carries around a friend, a talking sunflower on her shoulder, an older guy....seems to be from around the mid 70's given his haircut and clothing and a young man maybe 18 or so that seems to be frustrated about something. The first night I slept in the house they came to see who I was, as I drifted off into the night. Then they got used to me and it's no big deal. Once while downstairs, I heard a loud clang.....so I walked upstairs bedroom to see that a fire alarm had come undone from the ceiling......I looked at it after picking it up and could see the battery in it had expired.
Interesting. We have lived in our home since December of 1989. The house was built about 1978. I knew the people who lived here before. Two had died, but not in the house. They were in the hospital. A woman named Ann and her mother. The mother passed first. We have had activity in the house that seems to come and go. When our daughter was a toddler she would laugh at all hours of the night as if someone was playing with her. There was no nightlight in her room. We would go check on her and she would be sitting in her crib in the dark just laughing away and babbling to someone. Nothing bad has ever happened. We do have a coat closet in the living room that would open on its own. You could hear the door knob moving too.
But did you also see them? And, if yes, how would you describe their appearance? Do they look completely as normal humans or do they look foggy or something like that?
@@phantomiv8045 yes I saw them as I entered the dream state. The little girl with the smiling sunflower floating on her shoulder, the middle aged guy as he turned around and went up the stairs, wearing a classic 70’s haircut and sweater and the teenage young man with typical clothes on. I assume many people have died in the house as it’s 125 years old now. Some left and some didn’t. It’s built on greenstone, that’s perhaps millions of years old.
I have videoed orbs in the apartment of the 200 year old house I live in. I have posted this on youtube as " African grey Parrot meets the spirit orbs. My bird can see them and react. I , unfortunately can't. They seem peaceful and I do consider their house. Who knows, at 63, I just might join them. The bird is 32, he's got another 20-30 years to go!
If you don't build a miniature house for ghosts of familiy and others to live in, they can cause household troubles and have to shelter in nearby trees. - Something learned in Thailand. Keep your eyes open for miniature homes in front of houses there.
I appreciate the fact that you actually posted the name of the film directly onto the screen. I get SO annoyed at similar channels who give a summary of a movie or TV show and refuse to reveal the name....not even in the video description. This film was completely unexpected to me. I was 18 years old when I first saw this, and it completely made an impression on me. This film, along with _The Matrix_ (the first one) and _Vanilla Sky._ It was genuinely creepy without being the usual bloody slasher. Today I marvel at what they were able to accomplish with what was very likely a smaller (in Hollywood) budget. Thank you for sharing this gem! ❤️
I was discussing this with someone and she said the same thing. The mother was keeping her children from moving on to...wherever they were supposed to go. She couldn't let go.
One of my favourite horrormovies of all time. I even loved watching Nicole Kidman playing the role of a strong but at the same time fragile woman. Nobody like her can be so elegant, ladylike and at the same time look nearly dangerous. Even after all the surgery she has had, it seems to me that this impression of her even has become stronger. A kind of modern snowqueen, you never know exactly if she is good or evil. And of course it was a really nice story behind the film and a perfect set.
If you like this movie, I highly recommend The Changeling from 1980. One of my favourites. I haven't seen The Others, stoked to have a new ghost story to watch (even though I now know the story line).
I don't believe in ghosts or anything supernatural. The only time I even came close to questioning this was when I was a high school art teacher and I was staying late painting. There was a skeleton in the middle of the classroom that I had borrowed from the science lab. I had put it up on a table for the students to draw. When I was leaving, I turned the lights out and looked back. Incredibly, it's eyes were glowing red. I forced myself to walk towards it until I discovered it was only the red exit sign shining through the tiny holes in the back of the skull's eye sockets. There's always an answer.
@@amaree9732 There may always be an explanation, and more often as not it probably is mundane, but it's arrogant to think that we know the truth of all reality. We don't even know all of the hidden secrets of our own world much less the rest of the cosmos.
@@amaree9732 If you actually want to know about something specific look into people who are knowledgeable about it. I'm just some random guy on the internet. I don't have any evidence to show you. Nonetheless, there are plenty of mysterious events that can be looked into that defy simple explanation.
I'm glad this video was randomly recommended to me. *The Others* is one of THE BEST films I've ever seen. Nicole Kidman and the Cinematographer should have won every award ever created. I haven't seen this movie in 10 years, yet it STILL stays with me as if I watched it last week.
Great idea, spoil the ending for anyone who hasn't seen the movie. Put the final twist of the movie into the video title, what a great idea. Any of you who haven't seen this movie needn't bother now. More importantly, you don't have to watch this video either as you have learned everything that you need to know about it from the title.
The Others is one very good film.. I've always watched movie without reading it's back story. And the Others was an exception. One will think it's a haunted house. But instead, it's the reverse. They were the deads of forgotten era, and the noises were the new modern human living in their house...maybe Id rewatch it again. Watched it almost 30yrs ago
You can see hints of melancholia, paranoia, and obsession in her behavior- maybe wrapped up together as what we would today call OCD. This movie does somewhat stigmatise the mentally ill, but then they WERE stigmatized brutslly back then.
I think that's a major point that was made in the end. The son asks her if they even is a limbo... and she says she doesn't know. The whole movie she's so stuck on her catholic beliefs, and now she admits she isn't so sure. It's like she uses her faith just to pretend that everything is all fine. If that makes sense.
This movie was so good It was one of the movies I watched not reading dialogue or being told by anyone So it was a huge shock to me, got the same shock with the movie The Life Before Her Eyes (Uma Thurman)
I loved the caption for your cover of this video upload.:"The woman confronts three ghosts, totally unaware that she too is one of them". Hilarious! There were several episodes of the exact-same theme in Rod Serlings' "The Twilight Zone'; this was a series that drove shivers down your back and each episode resonated long after the show was over.
I always loved a good good ghost story but I was a non believer til my father passed away in 1994 . I was sleeping on the couch and smthng told me to look over towards the front door and so I did just that and there was my dad standing at the front door..no expression to his face then disappeared. About a week or 2 after his funeral I believe my dad wanted his presence to be known and passed through my now ex husband making my ex feel sick(my father was really badly sick when he passed). This then made me a believer. Another was when my mother passed and I had her ashes shipped to my home and that night at 1:30 am I heard her speaking to me and it made me jump up…later that day my youngest daughter showed me a pic she took with her phone….it was of a ghostly elbow and lower right arm….i still have that pic …..it’s my mother….moss her so much 😢
I watched this for the first time about three days before I watched The Sixth Sense for the first time. …and, I never saw the twist coming about Bruce Willis’s character.
This is truly one of the best ghost stories No gore no jumping out from behind the curtains. Its a shame you give away the ending without a spoiler alert.
