What a brilliant doctor. As deep as her love was, so was her hurt all because she was blind to the fact that he never loved her and it was her inexperience and ignorance of men that contributed to her heart of stone ... yet her conscience would not give her peace of mind. Excellent performance to be had by all. Fantastic context. ❤

"...up the ascending colon and down 40 or 50 times." Surprising line among many in this script. Also if the Dr. had called the prison today to stop the hanging, he's get "If you are calling to save a prisoner, press 1, all others stay on the line."

This is a "Hell hath no fury than a woman [who perceives herself] scorned" story. It's so obvious what was going to happen the moment he said "I'll go to the chemist" - to buy some weedkiller (?) And then decides he'll give her the medicine instead of letting the nurse...What a dope.

Original title of the short story " The Gionconda Smile" - in other words, the Mona Lisa smile - is a terrific story. The doctor, Cedric Hardwicke, (not actually knighted) is famous as Capt Hook in "Peter Pan" & is the father of Edward Hardwicke, the fine actor who played Dr. John Watson to Jeremy Brett's Sherlock Holmes. And Boyer's first wife Emily is played by Rachel Kempson, mother of Vanessa & Lynn Redgrave! She certainly was striking when younger & can hear a similar voice to VR.

Wouldn't call this film noir, but still a very good psychological drama which I hadn't seen before. I worked out very early on who the real murderer was. Charles Boyer was charming and Cedric Hardwicke gives a fine performance as the perceptive doctor.

I know, right?? 🥰 He definitely had the looks, accent and deep voice, but what really made me swoon for him was learning just how kind he was in real life. Mia Farrow mentions him in her autobiography. She grew up in the same neighborhood as the Boyers’ and was the same age as their son. She said that, next to her parents, he was her favorite adult. One day, the two of them were waking down the street together. They discovered a bird’s nest that had fallen to the ground with babies still inside. Charles wiped his hands on some leaves, explaining that he was trying to remove the human scent, and carefully restored the nest back into the tree. He could have had any woman he wanted, yet remained faithful to his wife all of his life. When she died of cancer, he couldn’t live without her and committed suicide 2 days later 💔. In my eyes, Charles Boyer was a one in a million…

The reason men get married, Mary, is that we boys can then get sex on a regular basis, instead of having to chase females all the time, spending a lot of money and energy, and still not being certain of getting laid! Aldous Huxley (who brought us Brave New World) did an outstanding job with the screenplay. Such great dialogue. Great cinematography too.

Yes it is difficult to feel the innocence of the innocent, and not to celebrate the guilt of the guilty in this story. Scorned women deserve empathy but 18 years of baseless hope! And then the ultimate travesty. Enough to drive you mad. Still No one inside of us makes us do anything. We are responsible for our own capacity, for what we do despite justifiable hurt or feelings of unjust treatment ; neither decent nor indecent behavior seems to get their just desserts. Regardless. We are responsible! For what we do that is egregious there is always a consequence. Good may be inconsequential, hardly noticeable like friendship. Evil never is. It requires plotting the deed. Macbeth hath murdered sleep, indeed.
