Country squire Henry Maurier leads a seemingly idyllic life with his wife Emily, a woman struggling with chronic health issues. Henry's patience is tested when Emily's brother introduces him to his young mistress, Doris. That same night, Emily passes away due to her heart condition, and Henry swiftly marries Doris, drawing the ire of his neighbor Janet Spence, who harbors romantic feelings for him. When an autopsy reveals that Emily's death was hastened by arsenic poisoning, Henry is thrust into a high-stakes trial, fighting for his life and pleading his innocence in a web of secrets and deception.
