A very brief look at how I blend Angora (or Alpaca) with wool to spin for handknit socks and #sockspinalong23 This is just my way, and hopefully will inspire you to give it a try! Do any of you have tips or tricks for working with Angora? Please feel free to share them! Thank you again to ‪@emilionstyle‬ for the lovely Angora
Ange from ‪@YarnNYarns‬ podcast has a great episode all about blending Alpaca and wool on her channel, be sure to check that out!

I love your bunny toe socks. I love combing fiber too and always card it together. I find combing different wool and fiber together makes such interesting textures.Angora is a warm wonderful addition.

Thank you for showing how to card on the pet brush. I have some grey Gotland I'd like to card and spin. It's so curly and a challenge.🌱💕😊

Absolutely! Oh and for Gotland curls, maybe something more like a pet grooming "rake" I think they're called? More like a single row of teeth?

I blended my angora for the first time with Romney wool and really love the result. I could have definitely used more angora. It doesn't seem to have any halo but I think it did add a little softness and hopefully warmth. Not sure yet what I'll make with it but I basically did the same as you I just used hand carders and made rolags.

Oh that's wonderful! I really like it as a blend. Now I'm thinking that it would be nice on the tip of mittens, too ❤️

Hi I’m very motivated to spin for my first handspun socks! I have a gorgeous roving that is 70% merino and 30% Black Welsh Mountain. I’m hoping that will give it enough strength for socks? I’m spinning on a drop spindle as I don’t have a wheel, but I love this method. Thank you - I’ll hashtag on Instagram when I have a good amount to show and you can see the beautiful colour xxx

Thank you Cary. Love the bunny toes. You are so right about adding angora to socks. I have a pair with shetland, silk and angora blended and spun, They are soooooo warm and comfy.

What percent angora are you using for bunny toes vs. the roving? Like 10%. I do have fine teeth on my drum carder. I am going to try it with that I think. Love this idea! thank you
@mywoolmitten

Hi Maggie! Yes, exactly, about 10% 🙂 Thank you for joining in!

I just cast on a sock using a merino/alpaca blend yarn I had spun and dyed last year. It's chain plied. This is only my 3rd attempt to try knitting socks. I hoping to finish this time instead of frogging.

I'm still playing about with an old fibre advent for my potential sock spin. Different breeds, different spinning techniques/plies etc. I have some baby alpaca in the advent, but not enough for a whole sock. But watching this just gave me an idea. I could blend some alpaca with two different breeds for toes and see which holds up better. I think I have Cheviot, Dorset Horn or Kent Romney to choose from. They're going to be the ugliest socks ever from the colours, but an interesting experiment and learning experience.
@mywoolmitten
@mywoolmitten Год назад
That's exciting Gemma! Did you by any chance see my socks from last year's spin? I sampled several blends (and colors!) and ended up with a multi color tall, tall boot sock! I love them ❤️ Yours will be amazing, too!
@gemmaf_
@gemmaf_ Год назад
@@mywoolmitten Yes I did. They came out really nice. Because my fibres are from an advent, not only are they loads of different breeds, but all sorts of colours. I tried choosing breeds suitable for socks, but omg the colours 🤢🤣 They won't be nearly as nice as yours. Lovely earthy colours with pastels and highlighter brights is going to be erm, interesting!! 🤣 I'm thinking of striping them just to test different fibres and plies etc.

Hi there, I'm curious to know if it's possible to spin pure merino for socks, and how many plys would it take? I have merino sheep and would love to participate:)
@mywoolmitten
@mywoolmitten Год назад
Hi Carla! I'm so glad to have you here! Yes, I say you ABSOLUTELY can spin pure Merino for your socks, especially if it's from your own sheep (because you're going to love and appreciate it so much, right?) I would think, maybe aim for a 3 ply if you can spin fine enough? And give it a lot of twist, but not enough to make it harsh, if that makes sense? I am so, so glad you asked this question! Will you be prepping the wool yourself? Or do you have it processed at a mill? Just curious 🙂
@carlahill2332
@carlahill2332 Год назад
@@mywoolmitten Thank you for the lovely feedback. I will definitely try that! I do process the wool myself, which I find very therapeutic (although slow);) I have only recently learned to spin, so I am no expert at all, but the art brings so much joy, and I find slowing down to appreciate these little things adds to my mental wellness. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
