Guys he is right get an extractor. My dad is a plumber and uses flux to solder pipes together and after 30 years of that - as he has no extractor or protection for his lungs - he breathes like he smoked. So guys please don't be like him get an extractor.

Mitchell wodach different amounts by large comparison. Plumbing solder is usually much larger than the 1mm solder wire smd hobbiests use. Louis' flux globs are magnified. Take it from Big Clive who has been doing this for decades...

My grandfather has been soldering for 50 years almost everyday without extractor. He also smokes, which doesn't help him. He is now 70% blind and can't breath properly without sounding like a ran a marathon while having a cold.

What is in the fumes being extracted? My doctor said flux is animal fat and if it were causing issues, it would make me cough or feel bad in some way but I never have. And smoking will make you cough way before 30 years. That being said I still plan to get one just in case. I also got a lead test and my levels were barely measurable. I read that most lead absorption comes from ingestion not inhalation and I always wash my hands after and usually wear nitrile gloves while soldering.

To be honest I don't think this is an issue for a hobbyist. A half hour a month of solder fumes doesn't seem like a big deal. But I am 100 percent onboard with proper PPE and fume extraction if you're doing this with any level of regularity.

The cheapest way to get a very good protection is just by buying a real half facepiece respirator mask and wearing that while soldering. I do this as a hobbyist. New filters do cost only about 12 €. Of course a fume extraction device is better, because it also cleans the room, while i have to open all the windows and leave the room after the work is done, but a respirator mask is better than nothing and much more versatile. The half facepiece respirator mask does only cost you 22 € and will be usable for years.

Just a note: the circle of grey stuff doesn't come from the solder and flux, it's just dust. The discoloration, on the other hand, comes from the solder and flux fumes. None the less, it is important to get a fume extractor.

Wow. This is the most reasonable advice I've seen online in regards to the subject of soldering fumes. People get so defensive and downright hateful when you even imply that maybe you could be breathing in LEAD rather than just flux. So many soldering tutorials where dudes don't wear gloves. It's pretty sad. I've also seen adult men get soaked in led acid battery fluid all over their hands like no big deal. Every single molecule of lead that enters your bloodstream via your skin, lungs, mouth, or eyes will stay in your body FOREVER. I am also extremely poor, I make less thank 12k per year. I solder outdoors with a fan I got from goodwill sucking up the fumes right in front of my work. I also wear a soldering gas mask rated for lead filtering during extended work sessions, and I always wear latex gloves.

For my soldering i just bought a bit of MDF board. Screwed a 120mm high airflow PC fan to it and using some PVC pipe fittings attached a bit of small aircon duct to it. Then i stick the MDF board in my window and blow the fumes right outaide. Cost me all of about $20

I've got a shop-vac that would work decently as a cheap solution for fume extraction. It has an inlet and outlet with a filter in the middle. Hook up a hose to both ends and run the outlet outside if you're worried about anything that makes it past the filter. Should work pretty well and was only about $30-50. Plus it can still be used as a vacuum.

hey for the people who are broke and love to solder. I'm setting up an inline fan with some exhaust ducting to exhaust to outside. Louis has a closed loop system which filters air and replenishes the air in the room. A cheaper option would just be exhaust to outside. like a dryer vent. I'm going to be setting this up on my station after seeing that abortion of an air filter. Thanks again louis for the psa! 80 year old me thanks you.

A good way to do this on a budget is what I'm doing, take a high power bathroom inline extractor fan, place hoss on both ends, one end goes into the loft and out under the eaves, the other end comes through the ceiling and sits above the soldering station, job done, no filters needed, extracts as well as the expensive ones.

up until I watched your videos ( started a while ago) I didn't even know the fumes were any harmful at all. Obviously I looked into it and now have a flexible pipe with a blower to suck the fumes from me workbench directly outside, spent probably like 30 bucks on it but it does the job for me. And yes I know it probably isn't ideal but it's the only way for right now how to efficiently get the fumes away from me. Thanks for the video Luis :)

I do hobby soldering(not a whole lot even) and while I first started doing anything with soldering I would just have a stupid setup of a couple of fans(a smaller fan next to where I was soldering, and a bigger fan a foot and a half or two away going out my window to blow it outside) to get rid of the solder smoke, but then I ended up getting one of the cheap(like $50) solder fume extractors online, and I definitely enjoy the piece of mind that I'm probably not gonna get some sort of terrible lung disease(although I used to smoke cigarettes, but I quit, so hopefully I'll not end up with lung cancer).

A cheap solution is to get a "6 inch mixed flow fan" off eBay or Amazon for like $40, and a 6" dryer / air conditioning duct, and to just vent it outside. Way better than nothing.

I work on vacuum cleaners, which does involve soldering every so often, but I keep a big air purifier at one end of my workbench that I run on hi all day as I work. Vacuum repair and service is a very dusty job, and I have allergies, and just don't want to breathe it all in anyway, its also cut way down on the dust in the store as well. We have 2 more smaller air cleaners around the store too. And if I'm soldering something, I do it right in front of the one on my bench, so it sucks it all in, not me or my lungs. And if I have my face right up near the fumes, I'l take a deep breath of clean air first, and then slowly breathe out my nose to prevent it from even wafting up my nose as I hold my breath. As long as I'm not sucking it in my nose or mouth, I can watch the smoke/vapor waft into the front of my air cleaner.
@rossmanngroup
@rossmanngroup 8 лет назад
+compactc9 the idea is to get it before it goes up your nose, because by then you;'re already screwed. whatever works!
@compactc9
@compactc9 8 лет назад
Exactly, I don't want it going in anywhere, nose, mouth, or eyes. I really don't even want the stuff coming up against my skin. And I have noticed that the slow exhaling will push the rising fumes away from my face as they get sucked to my right and gone forever. The few times I've had it go up my nose, I had to go immediately and blow my nose, it burned and made my eyes water, I almost could feel it poisoning me. Probably more in my head, but still, I don't really want cancer in my respiratory system, or even lead poisoning, God forbid! I have enough sinus problems with my normal allergies, and don't want or need to add to that.

@pr0xZen
@pr0xZen 4 года назад
The prefilter is really more of a rough mesh to catch big elements. If you're not a smoker, your nostrils, mouth ( bi ass pieces of tape and dust) and cilias should catch that stuff. It ain't that dangerous to fiddle as bout a bit with that filter. The really harmful stuff, is in the other / other two big filters underneath - the large HEPA filter and carbon filter. But because those particles are down to one micrometer or less, and you often can't see the fume residues at all because the carbon filter is kinda, well, black - that prefilter makes for a *MUCH* better _visual_ aide and representation, for what Louis is trying to explain here. Even though the visuals don't technically match the sentiment, the idea is still correct, and the majority of the target audienceare people whom do not already understand the nitty gritty technical details. And they don't really need to, as long as they understand the points.

You can build a BETTER fume extractor easily for less than $200. That includes the inline fan, box, (certified) HEPA filter and carbon filter. It's really quite easy. I agree with rossman 99.9% of the time. The only two points I really disagreed with so far, was the knock-off HAKO station, and the idea that you "NEED" this HAKKO Fume Extractor. It's ridiculously overpriced. The HAKKO extractor is literally a $50 shopvac with a $60 filter in it for $600+ I will be posting a guide on how to build this very soon. You can get everything you need at your local Home Depot or Lowes.

I assume it also sucks up DUST particles in the air and since the solder is not in gasform that is most likely dust, dont you think? It looks exactly like the dust in a vaccum cleaner. Thank you Louis Rossman! I demanded when I started at this job that they buy a fume extractor. It was my first job in electronics so people were touchy about it. Even with it I clean our workbenches and even with the larger debris cleaned off I still have my white paper towels recolored kind of shiny grey after. That said I only change the filter once a year and it looks a lot less "fluffy" than yours. Are you heating stuff besides solder and flux in that room? The only time I see fluffyness like that is in my home fume extractor when I don't vacuum often enough. In other words dead skin cells seem to make it fluffy. I can say the Hakko 430 is nice and quite compared to their older product which was a noise nightmare.

Health and safety is very often overlooked. I work as a stagehand and very often there are people 50 meters above my head, climbing and doing work. At one point, not long ago, one of the "I don't need safety, I know what I'm doing." types fell off the rig, landed on a co worker of mine and killed them. It's the same mentality that makes people ignore all those fumes when soldering.

i think most of it is really just your room dust and not fumes from soldering, that will be there anyway. but you still need to use fumes extractor, even in negligible amount can make harm, especially in prolonged breathing, what it is, when your work involves soldering
@flyguille
@flyguille 8 лет назад
seems like normal dust, like dead skin, etc. I would expect some cristalization if it were condensing vaporized flux. Anyway it is because the vapored flux is making the filter to be sticky, then come the normal dust and really stick without going deeper, so it looks very ugly because it keps dust in the surface, not in its inners layers. This doesn't mean that it didn't trap flux vapor, it did!, but it is not as gross as that. Simply you are seeing a convination of two sources of things filtered.

My old boss didn't use extractors. You have your head over it, hours a day. Do that for even a few days and you start feeling it. Throat feels sore, feel off in the head. Plus on small workshops someone on another bench can be soldering and it's floating around for hours in the air in there. I You can get away with soldering once or twice without one, "just hold your breath" sort of deal for a transistor or a capacitor you need to replace every few months. But it gets to you for sure. Even carbon foam filters and a PC fan are heaps better.

I've always been worried about the fumes, I'm a smoker which is bad enough by itself but I don't want to keep adding to the list. I cannot afford a fume extractor, would a homemade one using coffee filters, a metal mesh and a fan work? I noticed you mentioned something with a fan, I wonder if I could make one like the one you're using, just a ghetto version where it works like a vacuum.Update: After taking a bottle, using a cloth for the primary filter and coffee filter for secondary and an 80mm PC fan, I am proud to say that I have my own fume extractor. It works!

02:43 This is a pre-filter that traps the coarsest particles and dust. It is best to replace it every 7 days, max 30 depend on use. The most important are the next HEPA filtering very small particles like 0.3um. That gray thing is tin fumes, and this is especially bad for tin fumes with lead. Even if not such a great HAKKO equipment, each smoke absorber with 3 filters will also be good for an amateur, as long as the filters meet the standards. When working professionally, there is nothing to save on health.

For 60 dollerydoos (AUD) you can get a decent Ryobi shopvac, that's designed to be used on the extraction points on power tools.Put unit outside,duct tape funnel onto hose you bring into your workspace. BAM, EXTRACTION! Sure its noisy, but its got very high airflow. If you cant afford to spend a few $ on keeping your lungs reasonable (*same goes for eyes and ears as well!) you cant afford to do the work, be it pro or hobbyist.

If someone can figure out how to add duct tape and hoses to a paper and carbon filter element, maybe we find a good homebrew cheap hack

I always try to hold my breath while doing soldering if I don't have fans. I've made one out of a old motor with the hair dryer with carbon filters, along with pc fans.

I will like to see two identical filters, one sucking in just air from the room and one sucking in solder "smoke" - i am not sure sure they will not look alike. Sure it is bad for you to inhale the fumes, but i am more concerned about the stuff i can't see. - on a side note how often do you replace the real filter and not just the prefilter?
@mornax
@mornax 3 года назад
The product manual says it only needs replacement after you've replaced the pre-filter ten times.

I'd always advocate fume extraction when soldering (with an L ;p ), but it does depend heavily on what your soldering, what solder and what flux, a good quality thin no-clean flux will put out very little in the way of fumes, brown jelly is probably the worst flux for fumes, using a solder pot is pretty bad and solder paste in a reflow oven is going to make a large room unbearable in less than 30mins flat without appropriate extraction. For simple through-hole soldering in low quantity, with a reel of standard solder, a small desk fan and an open window is more than enough.
@Mythricia1988
@Mythricia1988 6 лет назад
Protip for the DIY or hobbyist: You can make your own fume extractor with an in-line duct fan, you can even get some fancy semi-rigid ducting and you now have a freely position-able extractor intake/head. If you blow it out the window or a hole in the wall, you don't even need the filter. Or you can make a filter using readily available parts, and make a recirculating extractor (just like the expensive ones). These will be, genuinely, just as good as the professional gear. I'm not gonna say it's a 30$ dollar fix, it's not - it will cost more. But it is affordable, if you cannot afford, or like Louis is saying, don't *want* to afford a proper fume extractor. Just be sure to use ACTUAL ACTIVATED CARBON FILTERS, not just random rubbish filter materials. You need that carbon filter if you are building a recirculating extractor. Else it's pointless. Literally.

It's an old post I know but just appeared on my youtube page , I'm an old tech that use to solder TV equipement with this thick gauge of welding lead in the old days on point to point equipment ,people and company owner used to have an excuse not to protect their lungs like saying well you just develop a technic off not breathing in when the lead touches the soldering iron lol ,then later i worked into big telecom factory in SMD device and fiber optics it took them a lot of time to adjust to safety norms believe me' we had all the safety imposed anti-static regimental rules like ESD shoes and flooring and lab coats but even there nothing to protect assembly workers doing touch up soldering works because the main part off welding was done on the wave machine with its own extractor ,so what we did we bought our own 120MM computer fan that we layered a carbon thin filter on them so we didn't have to hold our breath welding ,mind you welding surface mounted micro device your still controlling your breath not to shake under a microscope without you even noticing it !

Buy a cheap shop vac and buy fume extractor filters and and line where the air Is brought in and exits with with filter should be possible to do for about 50 bucks

I know a fume extractor is definitely a must-have, but I'm a bit strapped for funds at the moment (still working on setting up a workshop area, got basically everything I need). Do you think a good respirator like what painters use and a fan + an open window would suffice until I am able to get a good extractor?

+spartan456 I Made my own with carbon filter I bought of amazon and a bathroom exhaust fan. It's less of a fume extractor and more of a fume hood. But it pulls all of the soldering fumes away from me pretty well. If you can afford it buy the real thing but you should do something to protect yourself.

How well are those cheaper extractor with just regular carbon filter work? I don't have 600+ dollars to spend on the extractor since I'm just a hobbyist. I always just solder next to an open window, which's not always convenient. It'd be nice if the cheaper ones do well as well.

Instead of opening the window you can cut a simple panel to fit the exhaust hose from a shop vac. Used vacs are cheap and highly effective plus they bring in FRESH air by removing contaminated air.
