The mayo ones believe there was a curse on the mayo team in 1951 mayo won the all Ireland and the story goes that they were travelling home and they came across a funeral and they didnt stop and the widow of the person about to b buried put a curse saying mayo would never win the all Ireland while any of the team members were alive
It's a load of bollocks and, thankfully, Rugby is surpassing it in popularity. Soon it will be the 3rd most popular sport, as football has long since surpassed it in popularity.
GAA is not a sport its an organisation and its still the sporting organisation with by far the highest membership in the country as far rugby it will have soccer for breakfast way better run better domestically and bigger potential as far as winning tournaments though participation is low and will remain so
stoney71 Nonsense. Football is the best sport in the world, hence the reason why it's the most popular sport in the world. Football gets the highest TV ratings in Ireland and rugby gets the second-highest ratings. Says it all really.
Hazy Rose Football has not the highest tv ratings for the simple fact its hidden behind a pay tv wall. For the international teams there will always be more viewers for the tournaments than the all irelands because it encompasses the whole country not just two counties.People will watch those games who have no interest in sport. Football support is all superficial foreign teams most of the participation is non competitive 5 asides in ireland soccer 34000 went to see the ladies football ireland and just 25000 went to the FAI cup final given how well dundalk are doing thats pathetic.Rugby atleast is based on the provincial teams of this country and it is a far better game..The GAA has stronger roots it has the best infrastructure the highest club membership and the highest attended sports though rugby is close. Finallly GAA and soccer have being in competition for along time.70s it was soccer in the 80s GAA in the charlton era it was soccer in the noughties GAA.Now probably football ,but not as high as you think. Finally i would not crow to much about rugby it s just as likely to bite your nilball in the backside as the GAA.It has far better stadiums far more exciting. However rugby participation is far bellow either sport. There are more soccer clubs in dublin than they rugby clubs in the whole of ireland the same goes for the GAA there are more GAA clubs in cork 260 to rugby clubs in ireland 223.Rugby participation has actually gone down since professionalism. Football is popular because it appeals to the lowest common denominator its a poor sport for poor people
Go on to Boards.ie and look at the number of posts on the soccer forum compared to the GAA forum. The soccer forum is more popular. There's also this poll on Boards.ie's After Hours forum, football (soccer) is winning: www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?p=90437129 Bogball is only popular in rural areas, where the people are poorer. Their lifestyles are so heavily subsidized that the state can't afford to subsidize anymore and we'rte going to need to depopulate rural Ireland from 40% to a more manageable percentage. When this happens, more kids will end up playing for their local football teams instead of their local GAA. As for the lowest common denominator, considering that rural dwellers are poorer than middle class urban-dwellers and football is the most popular sport in middle class urban areas, I'd guarantee you football fans are wealthier and more intelligent than bogball fans. GAA was always a sport for thugs, kids coming into school with blacks eyes because they got a sly punch off of his marker - all, of course, overlooked by the referee. Then there was that incident this Summer when an off-duty Garda was beaten unconscious by GAA fans while he was trying to escort a referee off the pitch after they acted angrily to the ref's decision. No doubt football has its unsavory characters, but more middle class and upper class people enjoy the sport than they do bogball. Bogball was lawyas a poor sport for piss-poor farmers, who believe in shit like Creationism and vote for retards like the Healy-Rae brothers. As for rugby, it only turned pro in 1995 and the Irish team are one of the best in the world. It's on the ascendancy. Just like League of Ireland football. The GAA tried to suppress football and rugby with their xenophobic rules 27 and 42, but the Irish are starting to develop a taste in real sports.

Eoin Beatty how many times did we get to the finale ? How many replays of the final ? Maybe just because they have jobs and lives instead of just training every single day because they have a rich team
