A Year Ago I Set Up a Shallow Reef Tank and This happened

It's been one year since I set up my shallow reef tank. Let's see what happened during the first year. Did we lose fish and coral? And how are they doing now? Let's see some coral growth!
Shallow reef tank no skimmer update. This reef aquarium holds soft corals, lps corals and sps corals and was set up without a skimmer or any other reef aquarium filtration. It's been twelve months since setting up the aquarium.
I had to deal with Green Hair Algae issues, Red Cyanobacteria, Flatworms and so much more.

So beautiful! I can tell you really love it all, because I can barely guess the time and effort that it must take to maintain and deal with any issues. A few years ago we got a regular fish tank with fish for our boys and even that was so much work! I never realized how much work even a simple tank takes to maintain.

The euphyllias died because your tank was too early in its microbiome development. I think there is a point in the tank's microbiome development cycle where there is an abundance of bacteria that is harmful to euphyllia, and/or a lack of beneficial bacteria to out-compete the harmful bacteria. We don't know enough about reef microbiomes to understand what exactly is happening here, but the advice to wait 3-6 months before adding LPS and SPS isn't without merit.

always impresses me to see simple setups thriving... heater and dosing and lights and that's it. just maintain water quality and clarity through water changes and a decent clean up crew. no need for massively complex sump setups. Admittedly it helps with a low bio load, but I love a focus on corals. I'm so tempted to replicate this.

@davidmurphy4672
@davidmurphy4672 2 года назад
@@TheKruxed My nano 20 gallon cost about 1000$ to get running. 20 gallon novo tank 300$ for the tank, 1 ai prime light ( light and mount 300$ with taxes), 125 watt heater because of temperature swings (25$). Heater controller to keep temperature more accurate 25$. Four dosing pumps 125$. 20lb bag of live sand special grade, 15lbs of rock, 150$ for a skimmer to help keep the tank clean, 75$ for UV sterilizer to prevent fish diseases. If you want to make your own salt water you need RODI unit 125$. Fish store sell over priced water. Need frozen fish food, and coral food 15$ a month. Electricity costs an extra 20$ a month. 50$ worth of salt a year for cheapest brand. Test kits a huge thing you need expect to spend about 100$ a year on that the first year. Also need back up heater, and pump or they will die an extra 150$. Heaters do break and than everything will die. If your powerhead is not connected to a backup battery expect everything to die. No water movement will kill coral and fish. They run out of oxygen without it. Test kits are mandatory because too much of any element they will die and too little they will all die as well except the fish. Well Nitrates over 50 can kill fish. I run a backup battery for my tank costs 300$ and it lasts 3 days. Also need power heads to move the water around to create currents 50$. Than you got a tank with a 20$ Nemo.

I am not an expert but here is what I think. Coral do attach on their own, but only at the very beginning of their lives. After they settle down, that is it. They stay where they are. That is why they are growing on a small base. Glueing the base allows for exact and artistic placement. They the coral can grow and spread. .
