Aikido meant to be a complementary element. Like push ups. It helps you to execute other stuff better. It greatly improved my.... soccer game. No joke.

Aikido is still being taught and used in the Japanese Police force. Its main element is self-defense, as in trying to avoiding getting hurt. Which is important if a knife wielder is attacking you and most Japanese cops don’t carry a pistol. Try grappling a guy with a knife with your MMA and I assure you you’ll get stabbed multiple times. That’s why there is stick and sword training in Aikido. There is a clip where a policewoman was able grab a crazy guys arm with a knife and flipped him over to disarm. A lot of Aikido technique of arm locking and wrist twisting are quite effective, but the main point is to not engage directly with an attacker, keep yourself standing and mobile. In real life, unless your opponent is weak or unskilled or unarmed, all those Brazilian Jiu jitsu or Muay Thai … etc are useless. You just get beaten up in practice and get hurt many times just to learn it, when a snotty teenager can easily drop you with an ice-pick. There is a video in China where a big guy tried to stop some rowdy small teenager. He was able to slap their heads around but a kid managed to stab him in the thigh leg with a small knife, it bled profusely since it cut an artery. The big guy sat down in 10 seconds. He keeled over in 30 sec, and died. For real life self-defense that even small women can learn. Carry a gun. Carry it always and learn to use it. There are countless videos where a civilians was able to save her life and children by shooting large multiple assailants, some even armed. The gun equalizes everyone.

To be fair, Aikido was created for farmers defending themselves against swords and spears, where people would usually be running at each other. It's not suited for sport fighting at all, and has little self defense uses against people who want to punch you, in the same way that boxing training is completely useless in a duel against a trained soldier with a rapier.
