In this video I show how to replace a graphics card in a A1312 27" 2009 iMac from start to finish.

Warning* This video is recommended for technicians with previous experience. iMac GPU replacement is one of the more difficult parts to replace in an iMac and can cause more damage if not careful disassembled and reassembled properly.

My iMac broke and I tough I bring it to apple and they would look at it and tell me what is wrong with it. They said to me its vintage and ready for the bin. I was like wtf you mean vintage? 10 years for a high end iMac! They must be joking but no they wouldn't even look at it. But thanks to you I fixed it myself. I know its 10 years old, but the i7 3.2Ghz and 2Gb video is still amazing in 2021, still manage to edit en do all stuff I need to do with it! I love the iMac 2011!.

Update on 29 November 2021: I received the rebuilt GPU and it works great! While I had the iMac apart, I blew out all of the accumulated dust (which was a lot), replaced the BR2032 battery, and replaced the thermal paste on the main CPU with Arctic MX-4. The original thermal paste was now non-thermal gunk but cleaned up very well. Most of it fell away when I separated the heatsink from the CPU. I also installed the free version of Macs Fan Control so I could monitor the temperature and adjust the speed of the three fans. I have them set to run at 1500 RPM, but they will increase as required to meet the heat load. I hope to have a few more years of life out of this iMac before I replace it on my terms!!!

Thanks a lot for your great video - it encouraged and helped me to get my iMac 21.5" end-2009 back to life. In 2015 it "died", I took it to a repair shop, they confirmed a graphics card defect and wanted 400€ for a replacement without warranty. I didn't let them do the repair, kept the dead iMac and bought a cheap PC for the daily office work. Let's call it a "Corona-project", I took out the graphics card and baked it for 10 minutes at 200°C in the oven - I had nothing to loose - and it really worked!! On that occasion I also replaced the hard drive with a rather old 160GB SSD drive which I had used in my 2008 MacbookPro 15". This machine also died because of graphics card problems! However, thanks again for your video!

Thank you for this video! I found a 2011 27" Mac on a curbside recently. It was making a lot of noise, so I thought I would need to replace thermal paste and clean it. With the help of your video I succeeded. Working smoothly and silently now!

Great tips, thank you. I'm planning to replace the Thermal paste in mine. I knew how to get the memory out and the screen cover off, now I know how to do it all. Thanks for showing the way.
