Currently, submarines have no alternative but to flee when detected by helicopters and maritime patrol aircraft. But thanks to a new air defense system developed by DCNS in cooperation with MBDA, the game is about to change.
- Mast version: Comprises a missile housing (that remains watertight throughout the submarine's operating range and down to maximum diving depth) mounted on a hoistable mast and containing several short-range Mistral missiles that can be fired from periscope depth.

Mistral has very short range that makes surfacing a big risk.. CAMM would be better since the missile is slim and compact with longer range ... Just need to add 4 compact AESA plates onto sub. sub air defense would support air defense umbrella in the offshore operations. Also AESA radar could help detecting enemy warships. Like underwater frigate.

Yes. By one way or another the sub will be more exposed. I also prefer the ship-based AA, as it have a far larger range than the sub sensors might have. The biggest defence and weapon of a submarine is it's silence. And I confused myself. The torpedo version uses the MICA and the Mast version the Mistral

I think the "torpedo" version is more interesting. The Submarine don't need to be more exposed to launch the mistral.

when the us run anti submarine warfare {ASW) operations, they use closer to 10-15 helos, plus this sub just gave away its position by going to periscope depth, a much better defense would be to stay deep below the thermocline and run

launching missiles above the waterline should tend to eliminate underwater sound signature and associated sensor pickup, maybe not 100% but probably a chunk better than the alternative. so if the sub can launch at the enemy from a couple of miles away, before being detected that would clear the unfriendly helicopters from the area without creating the underwater sound from an underwater missile launch. Also, the missiles designed to fit the launcher may be extremely fast, short range units which is not necessarily what the sub(s) will be carrying for their primary mission. that has upside as well in the sense the sub can carry a good number of them while maintaining storage capacity for its primary mission. at the end of the day, Navy will not be keen on firing cruise missiles at anti-submarine helicopters because it's overkill from several perspectives, and on a submarine there is literally no room for inefficient solutions. worth looking into, probably.

Right so we are to believe these ASW Helicopters radar would simply miss this huge mast rising from the surface, after the first Helicopter was struck by the time the sub had fixed on the second Helicopter there would be a torpedo heading for that sub.

in a pop up attack with dipping sonar out thats quite likely, takes time to pull sonar, turn, target id and drop a torpedo, some doctrines is to usually have two helicopters, one dipping that has torpedos armed and the other watching with passives, radar with lightweight anti ship missiles, similar toin the falklands where they quickly launched a helicopter to attack ARA santa fe with missiles most nations such as the US when hunting for a troublesome sub might use in upwards of 10 ASW helicopters, and ship launched missiles carrying torpedos

Ese sistema tenia muy alta " indiscrecion " ... es mucho mejor el lanzador vertical de misiles AA Mica como el que propone SAAB-KOKUMS en el Submarino A-26 Blekinge !!

Form me if the submarine mistral Can upgrade to fire a surface to air missile on under water That will be a super upgrade To disguise a mistral as a rocket torpedo Before he can fire on surface with a missile 9 meters above surface like VLS

How would you detect, identify and pinpoint the target position from 9m underwater?

Mica can do it from the same submarine, so he has 2 options for AA defense : mica container launched from torpedo tubes or mistral from periscope.

The MICA one is more practical as far as I see.

Absolutely not the same size... Mica: 112kg 3m Mistral 19kg 1.8m

But you are crazy! expose a submarine in that way, at few meters under the water! So from a probable engagement at throughout the coast knows the exact location! ....The movie in fact deceiving, because there comes a second helicopter that send down the sonar ...... in fact his radar would have hooked the mast of the submarine and has already launched torpedoes ..... But,it is an advertising film ... ..

Too bad, energy based weaponry are still in it's fancy states.. Would be a much better solution.. Still submarines biggest advantage is her stealthiness.. So developing propulsion system that would remain silent all the while propelling the said sub at flank speed will be the other option..

also could have nice applications for carrier convoy escort duty, anti-ship, anti-aircraft, and anti-missile. definitely don't give 'em to Tehran or Boris. keep 'em for USA and NATO. these look like they could be nice, for some applications.

there are better active defance systems used in submarine worldwide. a mast for active defance when seconds matter is the worst option possible.
