GREAT Deals from B&H - Updated Weekly! www.bhphotovideo.com/c/buy/0/c...
CONCLUSION: So to wrap up this review, we gave the A7r Mark ii a 66/70 and our HIGHLY RECOMMENDED RATING…
The FINAL WORD: If you shoot landscape, portraits or are a serious videographer/cinematographer, then the Sony A7r Mark ii is a simply awesome camera capable of delivering stunning results… Beautiful color, killer dynamic range, amazing, amazing high ISO capability, etc, It’s a total no-brainer plus Sony also encourages adapting to third party lenses via adapters, meaning lens selection isn’t limited to Sony’s rather narrow - but improving - native lens selection.-
On the other hand, I’m personally not comfortable recommending the A7rii specifically to wedding photography professionals - the lack of dual memory card slots, to me is like playing with fire, don’t do it, it’s rare for a card to fail, but I think you’re better off going in a different direction for a primary camera Body with two memory card slots, second, as previously mentioned, the AF is still kind of spotty in low light situations, it’s better than previous A7s, but still misses often enough to make the hair on the back of my neck stand on end, and finally, small and as compact as they are, battery life on the A7rii and frankly the A7 series of cameras in general is terrible. For the record, I could work around the battery issues, but the AF and 1 memory card slot would force me specifically to pass as a wedding photographer on the A7rii… By the way, I’ll probably ultimately get an A7r ii, as I shoot a lot of real estate and portraits - two areas where I think the A7Rii would shine…

When wedding photographers were using the 5DMarkII, one slot did not seem to be an issue...
@DarrenMiles
@DarrenMiles 8 лет назад
+Bruno Slam That was then, this is now. Blimps used to be kept afloat with hydrogen, cars used to not have air bags or anti-lock brakes. The overwhelming majority of professional cameras today have dual card slots, and speaking for myself, I'm **MUCH** more comfortable knowing that I have a backup on board. In 10 years, SD cards have failed on me twice, it's a non-issue with modern cameras and dual card slots, but if you're comfortable with 1 card slot, all the power to you. I'm not. it's a chance I'm personally not willing to take today if I don't have to.
@styxwickorfrost811

+Darren Miles The thing about SD cards that you mention is the reason why I run Raid 1 on my hard drives. I need the redundancy so that if one hard drive fails, I atleast have another drive that has kept its data. I mean, I do have backups, but there was a time I didn't backup my files from a shoot and... well... the only backup I had was on my SD card from the shoot. That added around an hour's worth of having to edit my photos, let alone remembering what I did in terms of editing the photos since I find myself never using the profiles I set since the profiles I use just tend to give me another idea on how I edit my photos, thus ending up with something thats far from all of my custom profiles. In theory, I could have hundreds or thousands of custom profiles, even counting in minor differences. But oh well, IMHO, even for leisure, I'd much prefer having a backup. Just because one's using the most reliable SD card, it doesn't stop it from failing.

+Jamie Byrne Jamie, sorry for the delay in my response. I don't think I ever implied for one second that gear makes the photographer - quite the contrary, that's about the furthest thing from my mind. In fact I largely agree with most of what you're saying here. The single best tool in photography is the one between your ears, not the one in your hands. Even though manufacturers are leading consumers to believe just that - you can't blame them, they're trying to sell a product and clearly it's working. Great gear makes getting great pictures easier, but great gear alone doesn't make the picture, nor will great gear just automatically make you a better photographer. Rampant consumerism has taken over the photography industry right now - regardless of whether we believe it's the "shit side of photography" - it's just a fact that Sony has the spot light and they're spitting out models faster than Canon and Nikon combined and they're also producing models with features that many photographers crave - if that wasn't the case, their models wouldn't be sold out for weeks/months after they're introduced, pros wouldn't be switching to them, they wouldn't be gaining marketshare and they wouldn't be shrouded in so much hype. But they are, because they making products that allow those who are capable of making great images by giving them a better tool to make those images with. Cars without airbags was just an attempt to demonstrate that there are safety precautions you can take to insure you against faults or errors or defects - like using a camera model that has two card slots to protect you from a lawsuit if your shoot weddings and your single card slot camera has a memory card failure. That analogy has little if anything to do with ones ability to make great pictures, not sure why that thought entered your mind as it certainly wasn't in my head when I said it. I think we're talking about apples and oranges - as describing the latest and greatest gear and what it can do from a technical aspect is very different than using that tool to create images... You can make a great picture with an iPhone, or a 50 year old Hasselblad - but the latest gear makes getting to the promised land easier and more efficiently... These cameras from Sony are capable and overloaded with great features, but in and of themselves, they won't make you a better photographer. Just the same I appreciate your feedback, but I assure you, we're much more on the same page than you realize. Darren

+Bruno Slam Very true, but I've heard horror stories about photographer having gear stolen and their SD cards and other stories about SD cards being damage or something else. Newer cameras from both Canon and Nikon on the pro level of DSLR cameras will over dual SD or CF card slots. I think its insurance for your self to use two SD cards when doing a paid job. I'm from Boston and years ago I heard about a photography studio on Newbury Street that one of their cameras a part went bad and the photographer did not know. This was back in the film days and I believe it was a Mamiya camera. From what I heard they got sued for $150,000 dollars because there was no photos of the wedding. And this was a well know photographer that changed $4,000 dollars twenty years ago. Trust me cover your self as much as you can you don't want to run into any problems on a wedding you can't redo them. And I'm a Micro 4.3 photographer and I wish my cameras had dual card slots.

Not a Sony Fan Boy, but here is a tip for anyone who wants more battery life in any of the A7 series of cameras.... Put the camera into airplane mode. Battery life is greatly extended; How so many people reviewing their (Sony) cameras miss this or never think of it is confusing.

I sold my A7rmk2 for the reasons you mention plus more. Fantastic image quality, but auto focus and slow wake up from sleep caused me to miss shots at a football game while sideline . For 3200 dollars, I felt like i had bought int the hype. 1 sd card slot and and really expensive "body" was all i had to show for it. I sold it and my sony glass, cut my losses and bought d750 + 70-2002.8vr2 and 85.18g and never looked backed. Now I can stop worrying about my gear and focus on what's important .... photography

+Dan Valentini I think that's a good plan. I tried it twice and am back to my mk3 and 5dSr with L glass. Maybe next generation. Honestly hoping Canon kicks it up with the mk4 enough that I quit looking at Sony. I still feel pulled to try it again with native glass but as I mentioned in a post above, still would be fumbling around changing batteries, missing focus and unable to shoot fast action sports, not to mention selling all my lenses, flashes and controllers and retooling for Sony who lacks a dependable simple flash solution and the worst customer service in the industry.

Hello Darren, I always enjoy your excellent reviews! Thanks! I currently have the Sony A7r MARK II and it is a fantastic camera. We have done a few weddings already but more into product and landscapes but I have a thought about the 2 card slots. I wonder if Sony could make a battery grip with an extra card slot in it?? I've been around the photography world since the 70's and the mirrorless cameras out now give me flashbacks to all the shooters that fought digital for so long. Change is hard for many to grasp but in the long run the future pulls ahead improving things for those with an open mind, can study manuals, and dedicate enough time to build up enough experience with the new ways to be comfortable with them.

Hello Darren First of all thank you for all the hard work you put into giving us all these videos, any working professional would know that its hard to balance professional work and social media activity. I just wanted to ask you regarding the inconsistency in color rendering in this video ? whats going on ? I recently got the A7Rii, i am still trying to find the closest color profile that could give me Canon colors. whats your take on that ? All the best !
@DarrenMiles
@DarrenMiles 8 лет назад
+MC Photography | Mokhtar Chahine I was using different color profiles of the A7s - hence the inconsistency - I tried the S-log, but the base processing in FCPX isn't all that great and I'm not much of a colorist... From what I can tell, the best looking profile on the A7rii is "PP3" or "Natural" - it's the closest to canon that I've seen. Thank you for the kind words about the reviews.
@MrHelivids
@MrHelivids 8 лет назад
Excellent review, explains well that the suitability of the camera depends on the genre of photography undertaken. The experience I make with it in relation to landscapes and portraits confirm it is a camera hard to beat. Following an event through an optical viewfinder certainly takes less power, but I rather have the flexibility to have a small core system that I can expand with a battery grip or an external USB source, than start with a non flexible system that is bulked up in relation to event/sports coverage with fewest battery changes. The main debate is however about the auto focus system, if I understand the core of the argument being about predictability. Essentially the expectation is to emulate the behavior of a DSLR focus point pre-selection on the A7RM2. I can confirm, the Sony has definitely a more "auto" feel. I would however debate what is the better method? The pre-select and point methods works, if there is indeed a point available in that location, for dymamic situation our pre-diction is correct (luck and experience), we have time to make this selection, and you can control the camera such that you can line this up precisely, for most DSLRs you need to do this by looking through the viewfinder to achieve precision. The auto mode "eye detect" can work for you even on a stretched out arm with you just squinting to get the framing right, provided you could still push all the buttons it would take to activate it, otherwise only face detect. So the chance here is to get perhaps a very good unusual angle, but at the risk of the "auto" failing you in case the image is not recogniced. Eye detect can give a chance to get something extraordinary, up to each of us to decide what we rather have, looking at failures of auto, or not doing it at all. If it is all to critical, you still have "all manual" with focus peaking, just like you have manual and auto exposure. We have also automatic dynamic range features. This is an old debate, there are arguments for and against automation. Face registration and programmable ranking is an example where we can customise the behavior, for instance the ability to chose a focus spot small, medium and large, cannot find this on a DSLR. Perhaps customisation or predictability of "auto" is the key here in all this debate. If you subscribe to the point of instant gratification, then the perfect "auto" would be based on mind reading, ie the creative/wishful thinking of an operator. This camera has not been invented yet. The card risk: I'm no wedding photographer, but landscape shots are also pretty unique, often associated with large investments of time and travel costs. Do I worry about card failure? Yes it is one risk that could be eliminated, but I'm not sure I would like to trade this for increased power consumption, increased camera complexity or a larger body. I have not had a single corrupted frame in over 160000 shots, but use only trusted cards. Dual card recording does not protect you from camera electronics failure, I imagine best risk mitigation strategy would be to use smaller capacity cards, use them in the mid life (not brand new - not too old), two cameras (at least you have saved wide angle or tele coverage) and above all, the most expensive one, using a second shooter.

Darren, you can add the summary (the one that you used at the start of the video) in the description, it will become clickable. much easier to jump to the desired part :) about the second card slot, they should have added it in an optional battery grip that does not replace the internal battery, as it would solve or at least soften your two biggest issues.

Just stumbled onto this review Darren, very well done. I bought and returned this camera, twice, last September. I wanted to love it. At the time, using with adapted canon glass brought out those autofocus quirks in spades. I've been thinking about trying it again, with native lenses, but the lack of consistency in autofocus, crappy battery capacity, it being terrible for sports, and that goofy menu system is holding me back. Nice work on this.

In June I was going to Disney World so jumped in with Sony A7Rii with the Sony 24-240 lens. I got amazing shots in every lighting condition! Then shot at a county fair twice! Again very happy with all my shots! With the zoom range nothing got past me! Id never of thought this lens would do so well even in low light (staying in wide angle zone). It's a big lens but way lighter than my 2.8 Nikon zooms. Feels good on the A7Rii. (When zoomed out to 240mm you can even shoot close ups as close as 15-20" or so away!)

Excellent review overall, and you articulate really well. One point I'd raise is that the example you show a few times to demonstrate the issues with flexible spot (the one on the window in the background) is failing because the point is directly over the window itself. I've found that the point that you select is a lot smaller than the ones in my 5D. This has disadvantages (as you highlight) but also advantages as you can ensure that you are focusing on a pupil rather than eyelashes, for example. Thanks again, and subscribed.

+Sidath Senanayake Thanks Sidath - I prefer the smaller focus point for the exact reasons you mention. I was only trying to recreate the AF experience I'd been having, I used that clip because it showed what the AF tends to do in a variety of lighting situations, even though in the clip, it's pretty clear why it may have hunted. However, I tried focussing on the same spot with a D750 and D810, no problem...

Hi Darren What is your thoughts on low light performance of A7RII?
@AllenFreemanMediaGuru
@AllenFreemanMediaGuru 8 лет назад
I've been totally amazed at its low light abilities and I've only been using the Sony 24-240mm 3.5-6.3 which is not a fast lens. I can already guess that with a 1.8-2.8 lens I'll be in low light heaven! So far up to 6400 ISO it's beautiful and even higher ISO it's usable for sure. The more I've shot with it last 4 weeks the more impressed I am. (Nikon shooter last 10 years)

I see your point about weddings and agree. As a fashion photographer, however it's an amazing tool. I'm using my Canon lenses 24-70 2.8 II and 70-200 2.8 II with a metabones adapter and autofocusing is quick and accurate in studio and outdoors. For my needs it's the perfect camera but for weddings I would think twice and probably opt for the 5dsr or d810 as my main.

+eur0thug Agreed on studio, if you're in a situation where you can re-create the shot, the A7 series in general are great, fast moving situations in crappy lighting... I think I'd have a heart attack if I were relying on the A7's...

I currently shoot real estate with a 7D MK II. I am looking to upgrade. My three options are the GH5, a6500 or the A7R II. The GH5 and a6500 would be cheaper options however I really want the ability to utilize tilt shift lenses when needed. I also believe that the GH5 is just too far out right now for it to be a viable option for me. Would it behoove me to just upgrade to the A7R II over the a6500? I'm looking to do both stills and video (4K).

You're gonna ruffle the fur of the SONY FANBOY's with this video. That kind of dissent will not be tolerated by the Playstation/Sony cult. Insert crazy insane laughter at the "SYSTEM ERROR" (which I myself have experienced as well) screen
@DarrenMiles
@DarrenMiles 8 лет назад
+Theoria Apophasis Indeed. I've ruffled some already - it's still a REALLY capable camera, but in several ways, it feels like they put it out there before it was 100% ready - the fact that I can readily repeat a "system error" is on the concerning side. Give me 2 card slots, better battery life and more reliable AF, fix the system errors and you'd have an epic camera... it's still great, but I couldn't use it at a wedding. Just me and my $.02... If you're in a situation where you can replicate and repeat shots/situations (i.e. basically anything but event shooting), then it'd be awesome.

On the PERSONAL level, i give you far more respect that i would for myself , winks ;) I WONDER if you noticed that on Laniers Video called "10 Reasons Why the Sony A7Rii is the best camera in the world- Sony A7R II Review by Jason Lanier" his video (deservedly) is getting an immense amount of , shall we say "hate" because of course its very presumtuous. +Theoria Apophasis Dude Nikon had to recall D750 and brought out a new camera to replace D600. I do not see you making videos on Nikon fu**ing things up. Sony just fixed the overheating issue. Your other argument, not enough lenses. Nikon did not fart 50-60 years worth of lens over night. So not a good argument. Your other argument against mirrorless, you need to carry 2-3 batteries around. I am yet to see a single professional photographer shooting with DSLR, not carry 2-3 extra batteries. So again your logic is flawed. Last but not least, you are a hypocrite. You bagged mirrorless in your first video on mirrorless and now you have 3 Fujis. WTF??? Whether they are replacing your Nikon or not does not matter. You said mirrorless were useless and now you own three of them. You called Jason a sell out. How do you fund your gears? I have seen your photos. So I highly doubt that people actually pay you for those.

Matt Granger was also having trouble with this A7R II locking up for no apparent reason during a big trip. Good thing I'm waiting longer before going back to mirrorless for my primary camera. For now I'm a D750 shooter (mostly), but I do want to go all mirrorless in the future. Sony has some nice cameras but I just hope they get all the bugs worked out before it's time for me to buy again.

such a great review :) its pretty much everything i had experienced with the a7r2 - the thing i loved the most is the buffer and just knowing u can fire away before the action starts and get it all the way through to the end - yes u mentioned the reset of the custom functions- so annoying i actually thought i was doing something wrong or didnt save it or something - also a downer for weddings would be the ergonomics .... while the 70-200 f4 is a bit awkward on the a7r2 its still relatively comfortable ..... but imagine a 70-200 f2.8 on the a7r2

Ive put alot of thought into this. I love my nikon but im gonna be switching to a mirrorless camera in the not too distant future. Bottom line is mirrorless cameras are where all the innovation is. The beauty of mirrorless cameras is that they are ever changing. Samsung releases update for its nx1 every few weeks and after a year of updates its pretty much a new camera. Mirrorless cameras are just so much sleeker, smoother, and they dont attract the same kind of attention a dslr does. No mirror means you can see the shot before you take it. It means you can review your shots in the view finder or change settings without taking your eye off the subject. The in camera app store is revolutionary too imo because it turns your camera into an ecosystem that can communicate with your other things like your phone and you can even stream content to your tv on the nx1.

Good points. I switched from 10 years of Nikon for the amazing features and got the EVF shot reviewing (live feedback as I adjust settings) as a bonus I'd never thought much about. But I bet my natural light shooting is getting way more keepers because of it! The latitude of the images is also amazing. I've only used the native Sony lens 24-240 so far and the focus hesitates for a split second more than my Nikons but I'm already use to this so its not slowing me down now. Actually most shooters new to A7Rii are not giving the camera a month to get used to it I bet. It takes that long shooting many events and studio setups to remember all your custom settings and to jump into a shoot and not have to fiddle around but just get it done! At least that's how it worked for me.

+jeffry de meyer Hah! I'm a bit of an aviation buff so the airbus/boeing thing just seemed like a good analogy. The A7R ii is a bit of an enigma, because it's like they stuck a ferrari engine in it and gave it a weak suspension and skinny tires, but MAN that sensor is just a piece of awesome for both video and stills, but the batteries, menus, single card slot and spotty AF are a bit of a crap shoot for a pro... Just the same, it's still unbelievably capable...

Great and honest review. Agree the memory card slot would be nice to have, but, is not a deal breaker for me personally. Thanks for your review. I've been watching your vids for long but it's my first comment!My first camera was Olympus E-pl1 and it was my love. Then I changed to Canon 70D and started to seriously learn photography lately. However it's really heavy and it just doesn't feel "right". I'm thinking about buying an olympus ( between e-pl7 and e-m10 II ) again, or a Sony A7.You've been taken great pics with M4/3 cams but I'm afraid it's too "amateur" since I want to be professional in the future. Especially seeing the pictures you took by FE 35mm f1.4. But I just love Olympus so much !! What do you say about it ? Between Olympus and Sony ? Do they really differ that much ?
@AllenFreemanMediaGuru
@AllenFreemanMediaGuru 8 лет назад
I have only used the Olympus GH-2 all weather underwater camera and it's very good. But I have used: Sony HX50V, HX90V, RX100 IV and now A7Rii. Which are all excellent. (Especially the last 2 on that list!) The feel of the A7Rii for me is perfection. I have average size hands and have no problems with its grip. I'm having fun playing around with it and Nikon glass (Focus Peaking really works in manual focus mode) but so far the native Sony FE lenses cannot be beat on it for sheer sharpness and to get access to all the focusing abilities--Eye Focus etc.

@T-Slider 8 лет назад
+Darren Miles Ok, I'm getting confused? The last choice under 'focus area' is "Lock-on AF Expand Spot". Is this the setting you were using while having trouble? Second: Isn't the 12 position panel called up with the 'Fn' button a custom personal menu? You can assign whatever you want to that menu/panel, right? And thanks for responding so quickly.
@DarrenMiles
@DarrenMiles 8 лет назад
Joe, sorry for the confusion, my bad, what you see showing trouble in the review was in fact "Lock On Expanded spot" - however, the experience of having trouble focussing was exactly the same with flexible spot - that is the camera would fly past the intended target once or twice before locking on - it was happening in both modes. I just happened to have it on lock on AF Expand Spot when I recorded that section. Hope that clarifies. If you've used Canon before they have a custom menu that you can add specific functions (the ones you use most often) to in it's own section of the menu (called "My Menu"), so far as I can tell and from everything I've read, there's no separate custom menu in Sony. This is very different than being able to assign functions to various buttons - which the sony is very good at... Hope that makes sense...
@T-Slider
@T-Slider 8 лет назад
+Darren Miles Thanks Darren, got it on the focus issue. I have no Canon experience, but I can assign anything I want to the 'Fn' panel, and going there is much faster than going to the menus. I don't understand how this is less desirable, or is different from a dedicated 'menu' which is what the 'Fn' panel seems to be. I must be missing something.

Not to mention all the Nikon and Canon shooters who jump aboard, thinking their native glass will transfer over with one of many adapters, when in fact, they don't work as well as native Sony glass, esp. with the new focusing features, sony has implemented into their new 7 series bodies. I was a long time Canon shooter but have had Sony's for the past 2-3 years and have loved them but after shooting 1 time this past August with the a7RII, at a wedding, I couldn't agree more. I've been thinking about considering Nikon D810 or D750 for the wedding work I do and plan to do more of. Sure Sony is great in many ways but for a Pro photographer, Sony needs more time to get to that level, a Pro wedding shooter needs! I'm just wondering if I should be more patient, as they work on these issues and build better glass, or pull the trigger and spend more $$ on Nikon? You've certainly helped me, sway more toward Nikon, as an investment in my Wedding photography career. Thanks for the in depth video! Too many hyper Sony cross over enthusiasts, touting why they switched. If you can afford both Sony and Nikon, what a dream!!!!!

great review as always - I think that battery life is nice - but I think most make a bit to much of having to change batteries few times on a 6-8 hour wedding day - I would rather change batteries few times than lugging around a much heavier and larger body - and with the A7xxx body one can have an extra body hanging around the neck no problem to avoid having to change lenses - just my feeling - yes of course I would love to run all day without changing a lens or a battery - or a SD card - but it is all a trade off - I suppose there will be grips coming soon - but I would not opt to get one - If I was doing a lot of video yes battery might be a concern and a battery grip worth getting - but for stills - my opinion is that few battery changes in a long day is not a huge problem given the benefits in size and weight - I do agree that most of Sony's A7 bodies and the NEX and A6000 are not that impressive in low light focus - I do not have the A7s but assume it is much better - I have bunch of M43 Lumix gear and they just blow the Sony's out of the water in low light focus - Something Sony will work on I am sure - I just think having having 2 bodies with you is a very nice thing especially if you are the only shooter - changing lenses constantly during a wedding is just old school - and how many good shoots can be missed - Carrying a D4s or a Canon 5Dm3 with a battery grip and a heavy lens - and due to weight and size only being able to carry one body vs changing a battery which takes 15 seconds - I would say that although Sony has many good lenses like you said the 55mm F1.8 for example - they still have no match for the Canon 70-200mm F2.8 - so I could justify the heavier and larger body for that - so a mix of two A7m2 or A7rm2 and a Canon with the 70-200mm F2.8 might be an option :) But many are strong and healthy and weight and size not an issue
