Long gone are the days when corporate-backed game studios produced amazing games for the love of it. Nowadays, you can only find that passion in indie games. Frankly, any time I see a project with a $100 million plus budget, game, movie, whatever... I always assume is going to be a massive pile of dog crap. Too many fingers in the pie will ruin it.

@dennisvogel5982
@dennisvogel5982 13 дней назад
you kind of got the problem - you do not get 12 billion dollar revenue only from the fans - So gamedesign needs to change to suit as many people as possible - But the ideal game for every individual person is as niche as possible because of individual taste - meaning some people like roleplayelements in their shooter - maybe someone would like to have a dark souls shooter, maybe some likes to have a dark souls shooter with a card driven rougelike mechanic that lets you play an autobattler at the same time and buy boosters to aquire cards - the more you design in a niche the less people you reach but the more fun the people have that like these kind of games - But if you need to have everyone in the country play the title, then you need to design for mass audience giving you a "solid" product but nobody gets their dream game. Thats the reason why indigames work so good, or even kickstarter projects - They can go into the details and explore wilder gamemechanics without risking a 12 billion dollar project that leads the company to bankruptcy - But it would not be the right approach for the AAA titles. The only thing that can bring back creativity is if Budgets for games get smaller again - less risk = more experimentation and narrower gamedesign = more fun but smaller target audience = better games

I'm a game developer, and we are making the exact same mistakes. It's infuriating. Most of us know it's stupid, and what we should do instead, but the leadership is like living in a parallel dimension or something. And the result is the same too, last year we had to lay off people, first time in the history of the company.
@Mirkk47
@Mirkk47 14 дней назад
Why do you stay at the same company seeing it do the same mistake over and over waiting on your turn to be laid off before the whole company kicks the bucket? Is it just work to you? Do you simply view it as you'll do whatever as long as it pays the bills and then hop onto another company like that when necessary? Or do you view is as something more, are you invested in your craft? Why don't you and other likeminded people go start your own company? I see a lot of people not just game devs but everyone complain about their job. As if they expect everyone else to do something for them. But they won't do anything about it for themselves. For understandable reasons many times but a lot of times people are scared or lazy or entitled. And that's why bad things keep happening. Because these activists and people ruining everything are not scared, do act, don't hold back. So who's going to stop them? No one. Nobody is willing to speak out. Who's going to provide an alternative path? No one, unless you take it upon yourself.

@@Mirkk47 Actually a lot of devs do. There are constant exodus events from AAA resulting in a plethora of indies being founded. Some of the best games out there came to be like this. Supergiant games are ex-AAA. Black Myth Wukong devs are ex-AAA outsource. etc. But in the current state this is extremely risky. Close to 80% of new studios die within their first 2 years. It is worse than restaurants. Not to mention that many countries have a completely lacking legal structure for game studios. And now, with the industry downturn, there is also no funding (unlike in COVID times). Jobs are also dried up. Even senior developers can't find a job for 6+ months. So, basically, if you are a developer and have a family/mortgage etc. this is an extremely risky choice. And basically unless you are lucky to be in the few countries (USA, UK, France etc.) where there is some industry established - you will be fighting your own government too. I understand what you're saying and generally I'd agree but I'm trying to explain that it is mostly a legal/financial problem rather than a creative/cowardice one.

About what was being talked about at @35:45 I worked in a gaming company before the pandemic and the year before it hit we hired 5 new managers because our projects were expanding in scope. The hiring was made by the Directors and we ended up with 3 people who came from Call Centers (former managers there), 1 who was previously a manager at a small company that dealt with handmade products, and an assistant manager from a company that did accounting software (she was mostly a secretary there). So these 5 new managers were supposed to bring fresh ideas and stuff, these people were 30 years old that at most played some mobile games (bejeweled and such), they had no idea of gaming and games for PC and Consoles and the problem was that even when they started showing that they had no idea what they were doing and myself and other managers mobilized to help them understand, they didn't want to learn. These people were so prideful that they didn't want to even listen to the mistakes they were making, simply brushing it off with an "I was a manager in a different company for X amount of years, it's you who has no idea how management works". In the end, software engineers and developers started leaving the company because they couldn't put up with their shit, and the fault never fell on them (the new hires) because we, the rest of the management group that had been with the company for some time "should have done something to preserve talent". Any attempt to say that these guys weren't good at their job ended with the director saying "Do you think I make mistakes when hiring new people? Remember it was me who gave you that promotion" and other stuff like this. I ended up leaving as well because I couldn't do my job anymore.

This behavior is prevalent in all industries. My firm very rarely brought its workers up through the ranks, and instead would hire outside to fill management positions. We were a cement products factory, so naturally we recruited a works manager from a Walkers Crisps factory, who soon got the nickname "Pringle". By the end, we had managers from all over the place, the food industry, the telecom industry, we even had a former chemist, but too few people from the shopfloor who actually understood how the machines worked and their limitations. Spent hours in endless meetings as these chumps threw around Japanese management fads like kaizen and 5S and hoshin kanri, but none of it ever amounted to anything.

Deep Rock Galactic removed all FOMO from their game. Missed a season? You can activate any passed season and work on the rewards. Missed a cosmetic? Don't worry it can be acquired in game. Missed an event cosmetic (Halloween/Christmas)? All good, next Holiday, they'll have new cosmetics and will have an in game way to aquire the old. They also keep the game cheap and instead have cosmetic DLCs/Support the Dev packs. This way as many people as possible can enjoy their game. Those of us with extra income can on our own accord balance out the low game price. Season pass is free as well. Ghost Ship has it right and I really hope they stay that way.

This is what I intend to implement into my games. I hate FOMO in games so much! Gaming has been hijacked, like most other things that start off with good intentions. Before, games were made to feed your hobby, now that investors realized they have control, they are more interested in influencing your worldview, not feeding your hobby and fun. Games went from fun to propaganda. This explains literally everything that’s wrong with the industry. It’s why they don’t care if the companies close down after a bad launch. Their goal wasn’t for you to have fun or to make money, their goal was to convince you, or at-least, desensitize you to whatever they are pushing. Influence is more powerful than financial gain. Influence can give you power and control the financials. It’s 1 stone 2 birds if you can get control of the influence. Any normal person would spot that a female main character would be a terrible financial decision when your fanbase is 98% male. Which tells you there’s another objective other than just making money. If I made a bicycle and only wanted to sell it to people with no legs, wouldn’t you question my motives since it obviously wouldn’t be financial gain? 😂

First off 💯 I would add that a lot of these ideologies being pushed are rooted in the philosophy of postmodernism. It has become extremely pervasive in higher education over the last 20 years or so. Postmodernism, essentially rejects objective reality as fundamental, and instead replaces it with subjective reality being foundational. Thus, their perspective becomes unfalsifiable, because you can't prove someone's subjective reality is wrong. It's a perfect mind virus. It is often not explicitly taught, but rather taught implicitly by being the perspective through which subjects are taught, through osmosis. Effectively Trojan horsing people with a philosophy that they are un aware of, but because of its axioms is effectively invisible to the individual who subconsciously adopts it.

@@brawssLife is Strange isn’t targeted to a 98% male fanbase, so your point is irrelevant. whereas Halo on average is. Once you start thinking about business and not with your feelings, it makes much more sense. I’m not saying female characters are bad, and I personally don’t have a problem with them, but you would be naive if you think a game with 98% male fanbase wouldn’t lose money making the main character not relatable to the majority of your audience. There’s always outliers. Tomb raider does well, Horizon zero dawn does well. But also, those games are also not gender swapped from the original male character which is also an issue. Star Wars Outlaws (people wanted to create their own character in a Star Wars game, Concord (lost half a billion $) Saints Row reboot, got rid of all the cool male characters (FLOPPED) Dragon Age Vielguard (can see the incoming shyt storm). @@redalertsteve_ Yea kinda what I was thinking as well. To make it a success, they would've had to make a totally new BR mode, especially since Halo has flying vehicles as well. If they had put in just any BR-mode copy-pasted from other games, it would've put the game on life-support for a bit with the new BR players, but no players would've been turned into fans. And by implementing such a shoddy BR-mode, it would've only alienated and angered the existing Halo fans, making them turn away from the franchise. What would've been a cool Halo version of BR I think, is 3 teams of 20 players each pitted against each other. And just watch the chaos unfold as the map grows smaller, and ends up centered around one of the big bases on the map or something. Maybe add in some class-like loadouts inspired by Halo Reach or Halo 4, to add build variety and armor customization.

A big part of this is that the video game industry has overtaken the movie industry. It caught up and overtook the movie industry in profitability. Asmon mentioned "target audience". Well, that's changed to as games have overtook movies over the past 25-ish years. Many people gaming now, who wouldn't have been a gamer 20 years ago. They like story, they like Hollywood actors, they don't want a game that challenges them. This is not judgemental, just pointing out the chaneg in demographics. Where does all the money on AAA games go? Visuals. Actors. Sound. Presentation. Gameplay is last and to an extent, gameplay has been dumbed down. Stereotypical AAA games have become interactive movies. Follow the marker to the next cut scene. I think a big part of this is that overlap with movies. Initially, games couldn't look real, so developers focussed on gameplay. If gaming started now. AAA would never be able to invent games as varied as Mario, Civilisation, Diablo, Command & Conquer. Because none of them look like movies! They are games and would not appeal to many in the new target markets who really want an interactive movie. It's not even DEI. If there was no DEI in gaming, most AAA games would still be mainstreamed garbage with lame gameplay. But there are lots of good games, just not AAA games. As Asmon says, don't become a fanboy for a franchise. Go for the middle of that distribution curve, the indies and single A game devs are still doing inventive great games. TLDR: In the 1990's a game was 95% game 5% movie (at most). As graphics became more real, it changed to now, where an AAA game is 95% movie 5% game.

At 11:25 Asmon struggles to articulate why Battlefield V goofed by putting a claw-hand woman on the front lines of a WW2 game. Yea, the game is fictitious, but it's setting (WW2) has an established lore (in this case derived from actual historical events). But the same goes for Black Myth, it's set in mythical China, yea its pure fantasy and fable, but it has an established lore. If you're setting a game in an environment with an established lore and then start making (clearly politically motivated) nonsensical deviations from that lore than you destroy any sense of immersion and remind people of real-life politics. That isn't fun. Secondly, it's always the SAME political motivations driving these changes, it's so boring and exhausting to constantly have the same messaging shoved down your throat, regardless of your political affiliation or lack thereof.

Blizzard fked up with overwatch 2 and diablo 4, they are dead to me. I couldn't care less how redeemed diablo 4 is now, at some point they will make it bad again it is blizzard we are talking about. I would rather not waste my time investing into diablo 4 and then the game just goes bad again and I feel like I wasted my time. If blizzard brings back 6v6 to overwatch and rebalances everything, maybe I'll reconsider my stance on Blizzard but until they do it is a huge red flag that they don't care and I can expect the same from the rest of their products. I haven't bought an ubisoft game since black flag. I haven't bought an EA game since Jedi Fallen Order, and before that game I hadn't bought an EA game since Battlefield 1. @@PrioryCastle Well at least it got some of THE best visuals in gaming. Possibly the best art team, 3D-designers, level designers and music makers out there. I got Final Shape and had some fun with it... was it worth the price? Hmm. I don't know overall because I got the deluxe pack (regretti) and the writing ended up so *terrible*, but they gave me some EPIC experiences since it all looks so good. But yeah no, the new power system they forced on us is once again ehhhh, everything needs to move at the speed of light, Nimbus was a character they decided to make... Osiris is lame and gay... the open world is an empty travesty with soulless activities that might be fun for children below the age of 10... but I haven't played for a few months now. The Final Shape campaign on Legendary I thought was still mostly good, it was a couple of enjoyable hours. If I had just bought the base game I'd probably be happy with my money spent. They just don't deliver what they promise and had to add in the extra political stuff at so many turns. There are quite a few characters that talk about identity politics rather than talk about the insanely powerful God-beings that want to annihilate the entire galaxy and what we're doing about it, and the writers are dropping the ball on the cool stuff too, falling back to a basic understanding of "good" powers versus "bad" powers and nothing really goes any deeper than the game TELLING you "this is an amazing force that is very complicated and cool and amazing (trust us)." Sadge. Haven't spent nearly as much time on it but a couple hundred hours across all of D2? Probably be back again to smash some more dungeons if I can get my buddy along...

3D graphics is a huge factor in the decline! Think about it - devs have been spending more and more on getting games to look real, there's little resource or care for actual gameplay. Filming hours of cut scenes is an easier way to pad out a 40 hour game than creating something that has a geniune 40 hours of real gameplay but no cut scenes.

AAA gaming today feels a lot like the fall of Xerox. Back in the 80s and 90s, Xerox was a leader in innovation but lost its edge when the focus shifted from cutting-edge tech to short-term sales. They shelved breakthrough ideas like personal computing to prioritize immediate profits-and we all know how that turned out. The gaming industry seems to be going down the same path. Instead of focusing on creative, innovative gameplay, many AAA studios are driven by corporate metrics and profit margins-microtransactions, annual releases, and safe, formulaic games. Just like Xerox, they’ve lost sight of what made them great in the first place: pushing boundaries and offering something fresh.

that reminds me of the US auto industry and how it decrepified in the 1970s. the cars coming out of detroit etc were fancy on the outside but mechanically so bad the car salesman called them shitboxes when the customers werent listening. then companies like datsun and toyota made cars that were plain looking but lasted year after year while getting better gas mileage (during the 70s gas shortage) and the US auto industry went into a tailspin for about 15 - 20 years. from 1980 to 1995 if you bought an american car you were either rich or an idiot. US auto didnt get consumer confidence back until the late 1990s, and they only did it by copying japanese standards. the current trend in video game development has already happened in other industries. hope it recovers sooner than later, although thats not likely. the manufacturing of cars never got involved with politics; there was never a "sweet baby" coming after ford or chevrolet.

In genshin for example you would do the 4 daily quests, spend your resin and boom, now you can choose to either spend the half an hour you have remaining to walk around and explore the world in a hurry or you can do something else, when you could just be exploring the world calmly and enjoy the actual game which is botw-like exploration(sorta)

30:00 on the topic of not having enough time to play video games, there was this old JRPG called "the world ends with you" they had a really neat mechanic. It basically would level up your equipment based on how long you were offline. And certain equipment would evolve base on AFK XP. Players nowadays refer to that mechanic as the "touch grass rewards". It basically gave you incentive to put the game down and just do something else. I think a lot of games would benefit from that sort of reward structure

In Fallout 4 there is magazines that you find in the game world, some of them unlock new hair styles, power armor paintjobs and face tattoos, your exploration is rewarded with cosmetics. In Fallout 76 you press Esc and put your credit card to unlock the same thing. Now people will gonna say that cosmetics dont matter, they dont change the experience in the game.
@DakalaShade
@DakalaShade 13 дней назад
I've always liked that about Fallout 4. The magazines reward your exploration with more customization or character bonuses. Paint-jobs for power armor, face tattoos, hair-styles, settlement building parts, useful perks for combat or stealth skills, things that can help you survive longer (or make more money) in the wasteland. Exploration is encouraged by the gameplay design - I want to build a thing, I need materials to do that, those materials are in this location guarded by that enemy. Clean out the enemies, loot everything you can, sometimes you just get some lore for the area, other times you get a magazine or some rare items. You go back home and build the thing and much more stuff until you need the materials to build the next thing... and the loop starts again. Microtransactions encourage scummy behavior like making that build-explore-fight-scavenge-build loop grindy as all hell. An example (using F4 as the base because I've never bothered with 76) would be making "Adhesive" ultra-turbo-rare because basically every crafting recipe needs it, but for only 400 Golden Caps (valued at $4.00), you can buy a 10 pack of adhesive, perfect for getting you through 20 crafting items that need it. Then to make it a claim that it's not "pay-to-win," you give players 5 Golden Caps for their daily log-in, reward one or two per major quest completed, and then you can say, "You can earn our premium currency in the game, you just might have to play more of it to do so." And, no, cosmetics do kinda matter. I don't care if it's the best gun in the game, if it looks like a pipe-gun pulled out of a steaming pile of deathclaw shit, I won't use it. If the solution is to buy the "Golden Deagle Skin" from the MTX shop... I still won't use it... Because I'm not paying for a skin-swap that was encouraged by having the original model look like shit.

@DakalaShade
@DakalaShade 13 дней назад
@@h1r086 Same. You knew when you bought a Bethesda game, you were buying into bugs, glitches, community patches, and official mod support. You bought the game _knowing_ there were bugs to be found, that it's built on the back of a 20 year old game engine, and that within 3 months of the official dev-kit coming out (Construction Set/GECK/Creation Kit), there'd be unofficial patches to fix problems, and the mods would start trickling in to give you more to do. Elder Scrolls Online was always kept "divorced enough" from main TES lore that any "weird shit" was just them filling in unwritten gaps. Fallout 76 launched with the obvious intent of "everything's a grind, players must support their own economy, the whole game's an asset-flip of Fallout 4 with some Skyrim reskins, and we're doing this because online games make MONEY! We want our hands in your wallet at all times." Online games have no mod support - that means no community unofficial patches, no custom races to shake things up, no fancy new suit of one-off, lore-shattering power armor because "it looks cool." That F76 decided to take a huge _shit_ on Fallout's lore was just an added nail in the coffin.

I HATE FOMO in games. It's probably one of the biggest reasons why I don't play MMOs that much anymore. WoW is so full of FOMO now. As soon as I missed a Twitch drop in New World it felt like sh-t and I never watched another New World stream. I've never purchased a battle pass in my entire life. All of that crap makes me hate a game so fast. It makes it easier to just hate a game and move on than to keep trying to play. Heck, I'd probably still be playing Diablo IV if it wasn't for Season 1 dropping right in the middle of me still casually playing through the campaign. Instead I just straight up never even finished the last act and closed the game for good. And so did all 4 of my friends who bought the game at the exact same time, literally all of us quit like exactly 1 week before season 1. I just wanted to play the game that I bought on release, not NEW Diablo IV with weird vampire-themed events. And then if you do finally open up a game like D4 again, and you earn a SINGLE seasonal reward, it all of a sudden reminds you of the hundreds of seasonal rewards you missed since you left, and you quit again after a week. I just.... seriously.. FOMO and seasonal gameplay makes me absolutely seethe at how much I hate them. Diablo 2 had 2 seasons. The base game and the expansion. And your original character was still perfectly good to use whenever the expansion came out instead of making you have to start over.
@chaseturner

Same. D4 is supposed to give you the option to play seasons if you want to and then return to eternal, but there's really no choice when they trash the eternal realm every season. That, and all the slot machine psychology really make for a massive waste of time.

I have a weird perspective on this. I'm a huge RTS fan and the games I play the most are RTS games like SC2 and Sins of a Solar Empire 2. The thing with the RTS community is that it's really small compared to other genres so games have to be good. Anything less is quickly forgotten. I think a big thing is that many game companies take their fans for granted and can make money off slop games because there's always going to be enough people buying it.

Dude, I like classic style arcade genres... Like, Shmups, Rhythm games, Beat em Ups and fighting games... Almost no new big company shmup actually ever comes out, at all, but there is a rich history of past games, good ports and remasters and there are great quality indie games... Overall I'd say we still eating way way better than say, fans of sport games or even FPS... At least we know we will have 1 really good game per year, cause somebody will make it, alone if necessary. The only genre I know in which the best games are actually some of the best ones is JRPGs (J cause I don't really play western RPGs, but may be the same)...

One BIG thing AAA companies just can't seem to realize: cost of creating games grows exponentially, but the sales figures of games grow linearly. The more money you keep pumping into a game, the less likely you are to make a profit, no matter how many copies you sell. Realistically, how many games EVER have broken the 100-200 million dollar profit margin?

this is why they are going into the rat race of making live service games...each company want to have their own Fortnite, Minecraft, etc. Because they can keep milking the players with minimum budget. I don't think it's a coincidence that the KCD devs straight up refused to add D.E.I. components to medieval Bohemia, because the core of the game was intended to be historically accurate. That's why you felt like you were living in that world, and it was distinct and memorable. It wasn't just modern day with funny hats. And it was just the classic hero's story. For the most part it was a story of good v evil.

People have also realized that live service games are not permanent. Games add FOMO and unfun endless grind in order to reach "where the game gets good" so you're more likely to pay for their sub/microtransactions/boosts. WoW can at any point shut down, and all those hundreds of hours of grinding would in the end amount to nothing, and all that money spent is virtually burned in front of you. People are tired of spending hundred hours to catch up to a whale who spent 70 bucks, or the atrocity that is intentionally mundane grinding so they can throw microtransaction offers at you.

I have a feeling that the biggest influencing factor that changed gaming in the past years, are people who play video games for a business. People who make money from playing, who can invest that money in their game, getting awesome and flashy content, moving fast up the rank and making it look like the game is fast paced and in turn much more fun than it actually is. People who watch the stream get lured into it and want to buy the game as well, not realising time and money you have to spend to have as much fun as their favourite streamer has. For gaming publishers this is very symbiotic relationship sinds it's became much more common for streamers to get an early access for their stream. I also believe that the expensive $100,00 + deluxe pre order packs are targeted mostly to gamers with a gaming business. For them it will simply be a business expense. Indy game makers can't really tap into this marketing because it takes a whole company and legal team to set up a network for pay to win content. Indy game makers really have to build on gaming quality to get a community. Most streamers won't just nilly willy start up a game that no one has been asking for. So it has to be a game with such fun gameplay that a mouth to mouth advertisement has already given the game a bit of traction. Just a little rant, please add or critique if you have a different opinion.

There's very little information about Ghosts of Yotei, even the idea that the team is completely different is false. I'm 99% sure all of this outrage has been manufactured. Interesting to see folks who consider themselves critical thinkers believe what they hear only when it aligns with their existing views.
@LudwigVaanArthans

@@Arnazistithis sort of argument would have its merit in 2018 Today, if there is the stench of woke tampons, it's 99,9999% woke tampons. Go argue with the companies for never breaking that rule, not for us noticing the clear patterns
@Arnazisti
@Arnazisti 14 дней назад
@@LudwigVaanArthans Your argument has little to do with what I'm trying to say specific to Ghosts of Yotei, unless I'm misunderstanding. Are you essentially saying you're not willing to look farther than the talking points provided by youtubers? The reason I'm compelled to talk about this is because with things like Dustborn, Concord and Shadows you could smell the BS immediately, with Ghosts of Yotei it's a little bit different. Multiple points have been turned into ragebait by RU-vidrs, like the former Sony exec who said don't buy it if you don't like it, who has absolutely no involvement and no association with Sucker Punch Productions yet you'll see this repeated everywhere. A second point made to argue that GoT is woke is that the dev team is completely different (which in itself makes no sense) and used pictures from 2018s International Womens Day where SPP celebrated the 20 or 30 women that work there (out of 160 employees) saying that this is the new team. The timeline is basically that the trailer came out for Yotei. Then a small percentage of content creators knowingly or unknowingly fabricated outrage using made up talking points. Now two weeks later you have folks on RU-vid comments and twitter saying that "there's a stench of woke tampons" when in reality there never was. There are no "patterns", if you've played GoT you'll know there's multiple lead female characters. The overwhelming majority of people are receiving Yotei quite well (unlike Shadows with 133k dislikes on its trailer). It just happens to align with the clusterfuck that's going on with Ubisoft and Concord and etc and it's extremely easy to bandwagon on outrage.
