AAA iPhone Games DOA + More 7/10 Games

My biggest problem with AAA mobile games is that I have to purchase them again just for mobile. If I could simply connect my Steam account and play them on mobile if available, I would try them more often. I am sick to have to buy a game on PS5, on PC, on Switch and now on mobile.

I didn't buy any games in the last Steam sale and am now very selective with what I do buy. Less time (working more) and less money equals more need to choose wisely how you'll spend both

The important thing to recognise about the "mobile phone player base" is that they aren't thinking about the game. The game is just a figet toy to use between point a and point b, the less complicated, the less story, the less stuff to actually engage with, the better. They want quick and easy satisfaction that's relatively fun to do, but not something you have to think about

How haven't these publishers learned that PC, console, and mobile phone gamers are all different? We are not alike

The M4 iPad plays these mobile AAA games very well. I wonder what would happen if Apple made a an actual handheld console, separate from iPad and iPhone.

If I had a phone that's powerful enough to run console-esque games and am a gamer or interested in the bigger games, I'd already have a PC or a console. And I wouldn't want to waste any of that story and gameplay on a smaller screen. I'd spend my money and time playing a game I truly am invested in on something that's a lot more comfortable to my eyes and hands.

Handheld gamers have so many options today. the switch, the steamdeck, retro mod emulators. more people carry gameboys than bought REVII for their phone.

Flintlock is the exact game that's right up my alley. Jake coined the term "video-ass videogame" and it just seems to fit. I would love to support Studios like this to get more of those AA-titles like we got in the 360 days, but I am broke...

If I had a phone that could I would have loved to try it but honestly as someone who played these RE games on console I can't imagine how well they would work with a touch screen. If they could make a phone like a psp go (touch screen phone but when you rotate it horizontally you can slide the back down and get two sticks with buttons) that could work.

The other reason why these ports aren’t that popular is that they don’r even work on older devices. Many people have IPhone 10s or 11s and devices similar, those games don’t work on there

- iOS has 20% of the marketshare - Resident Evil 7 is only compatible with the most expensive iPhone 15 Pro. No iPhone 15, 14 Pro or earlier iPhones. - Buying it doesn't give you access to the MacOS version or vice versa - It's a game that plays better with a game controller - it's not a new game, it already released on other platforms where people probably bought into already In my opinion, this data doesn't say much about how feasible AAA games are on mobile.

Triple AAA gamers don't want to play on a mobile device, they want to play it on a nice fuck off big TV with a controller. This makes no sense as a business model! Mobile gaming is for Angry Birds etc.

Just watched Terminator: Salvation recently. It's crazy that I liked it a lot more today at 26 than I did when I was 12. Always down for more Terminator - although the films tend to be let downs!

A lot have already mentioned I'm sure, putting immersive/dense games on such a tiny screen is a bit of disservice to the experience as a whole I think.

I love to play 7/10 games. I finished all the games you mentioned. I wish, I had more time to play more of them.

I think it’s important to remember that within the apple ecosystem, the RE games are only playable on iPads and 15 series iPhones. Super small market overall and not a great case study because of this.

My first experience with RE4 was playing it on the ipod touch and I remember playing cod zombies on there too. It's great for like simple fun older games but im never gonna play something big and modern on there when I can play it on console

If Apple allows you to buy a game once and you can play it on Mac, iPad, and iPhone that’s some cool tech. I doesn’t need to run perfect on iPhone or iPad but it’s nice to have as an option

11:30 - The Sarah Connor Chronicles, Jake. I don't know if you've seen it or where you stand on it, but that was solid and really interesting. So overlooked and/or underrated. - Just too bad that Fox axed it as soon as it became interesting, kinda like they did with 'Firefly'. It's on that same list of canceled shows for me, along with 'Marco Polo' (Netflix). I was really into it and they left it on a kind of cliffhanger where things were about to go down and so it never got to tell its story (that's for both "TSCC" and 'Marco Polo'). - I mean, really... That show touched upon a bunch of interesting things in terms of the "Terminator" world and our real world, like digging a bit into the psychological stuff and what it means to be human and having humanoid robots around. It was actually commenting on things ahead of its time. - People either don't know about it the show or choose to ignore it like it's spin-off garbage, but it was literally made to be a sequel to the first two movies while ignoring the third, and people keep complaining that there was nothing good after the second movie. - I just disagree and it's not even an opinion. - Sure, it doesn't have the same actors and all that, but while that gave me pause (and some actors ARE a little "off", like Lena Headey not really selling the badass part, cause she just seems too nice in real-life), I forgot about that and could appreciate the show for its own thing. It was still made by big fans of the movies, they really cared about telling a continuation of the story the most. But Fox being all about the ratings... they didn't even bother to keep it for at least one more season or it could've been more acceptable like a kind of "three-part" series. - I'm upset again and it's 16 years old at this point.

Just want to give a shout out to Outcast: A New Beginning as a perfect example of a 7/10 game. It’s jank in more than a few ways but the traversal is amazing and rewards and progression are satisfying. You become a bad ass by the end.

my biggest problem with these games is theres no save state or quick save feature im at work and i have afew minutes to kill and then i have to go to work i lock my phone and i turn it back on and my game starts at the main menu again so stupid

I'm loving these "7 out of 10" games lately. It's like the pressure is off. I got Sonic Superstars on the cheap and it's just fun. It's not perfect but I'm really enjoying what's there. There is no season pass or live service element. These kind of games remind me of the past where a game didn't attempt to take over your life with a gambling element etc. Have fun, collect some stuff and actually complete it.

With a game, i like to sit at my desk in my room and play it sat in front of a giant TV and really immerse myself in whatever i'm playing (a 60 inch LG 4K TV in my case) i can't do that on a phone screen and i find it difficult to see what i'm doing on a screen that small with a game

To be fair, it’s only on the 15 pro. And how many of those are gamers that don’t already have a dedicated platform to play the same exact games with a better experience anyways? If the games were available at least across 3 phone generations on both the Pro & non-Pro phones, we’d have a different story.

The issues (at least in my case) are that I really want to play AAA games on my iPhone or iPad wherever I go. I downloaded and played the demo for all these games but the issue is that the games that have been ported are all old (Assassin‘s Creed Mirage was what I was looking forward to most and I even held out on buying it but eventually a deep sale came along and it had no release date in site for iPhone or iPad so I ended up playing it on my PC). Everyone that wanted to play these games already has on another platform. On top of this the amount of people who play AAA games and also have an iPhone 15 pro or an M series iPad is small. Assassin’s creed shadows will be released on Mac and iPad on the same day as all other platforms so I’m more hopeful for how that shakes out but the game doesn’t look too good as we get closer to release. In my idealized situation a handheld like the switch never exists and we all just play those games on our phones, since they’re way more powerful and have MUCH higher quality screens than even the switch OLED. In conclusion the issue is that all these games had already released on other platforms, and as such have been played by everyone who has wanted to play them Apple needs to work on getting exclusive titles for their platforms to attract users after that developers will follow.

Flintlock feels like those weird Xbox 360 games you would buy on a Saturday morning and play it all over the weekend because it's was simply fun

Flintlock: Siege of Dawn reminds me of Too Human, for some reason. (That weird Cyber Norse Gods game that came out for the 360 a cengury ago.) Like a really fun but janky time that's perfect to get on sale.

When it comes to the bigger games on mobile devices underperforming, I hope their publishers don't look at this and think "Mobile is the biggest platform, but these titles aren't selling, so they must suck.", and then don't connect that it's just that people don't enjoy these games on the small screen, or perhaps that the mobile-crowd doesn't want these games (or aren't used to them). - In any case, I just hope they don't draw stupid conclusions from this and then reduce their investment on even the console/PC-versions of these games. - You know how corporate logic often goes.

In my opinion, one of the issues is that they only ported it to iso. I have a samsung, and I honestly would love to play re4 on my phone, especially since the galaxy phones are competing every year with Apple. I'm hoping, and probably one of few, that they release an android port.

I don’t play games on my phone especially since the switch/steamdeck, but I just don’t see an audience for something like resident evil on mobile. The games that blow up are mobile variants of your mega games like cod and fortnite. I think maybe more party like games could do well on mobile?

Dead Island 2 seemed to hit just at the right time, and was surprisingly well made in spite of its development history. It may be a 7 out of ten but everyone will have a 7/10 be their 10/10 in enjoyment!

The problem with playing games on the phone is that you cover the already small screen with your hands and can't experience the full visual experience. There is a reason way you have a 65 inch 4k TV to play your console games that you sit 5 feet in front of and not a 5 inch....

The problem with "7 out of 10's" is that they almost always have QUADRUPLE-A budgets. It's one thing if a game was developed for UNDER 25 million dollars and it's a solid 7/10... That's great. BUT when we're REGULARLY seeing games that had 100 MILLION DOLLAR+ budgets (especially when you factor in advertising and marketing) and it's only a 7/10... That's a FAILURE in every sense of the word. 100 million dollar games HAVE TO BE 9/10's to even have the slightest chance of recouping it's budget. Because when the average gamer hears 7/10, they think "That means it's absolute garbage... the worst thing ever made", so they won't buy it. And if casual gamers don't buy a AAAA budget game, it's going to fail. Sports games and COD are LITERALLY the only games to earn a profit while have sub-7 scores... But for any other kind of game, a middling to average score is a death sentence. That's why when people say "scores don't matter" I look at them like they're insane. They matter almost as much as making a good game, which is crazy, but true. Because if a 10/10 game only gets an aggregated score of 7, it just won't sell well despite its exceptional quality. And if a 5/10 game gets an aggregate score of 9/10, its going to sell MILLIONS more copies than it should have... And people will either convince themselves it's good or accuse the media outlets of being on the take. But if you're saying you'd like to see devs and publishers make smaller/less expensive projects... Yes. But making a 7/10 game is bad for business, more often than not.

ALSO - If there was some way to connect my saves from PS & XB to my iPhone, that would make it somewhat worth it for me.

Honestly, it sounds like im a bot saying this, but I do enjoy playing Mobile games. I have the S24 Ultra, and it is a beast, especially with the Backbone controller that can use the Playstation Remote Play to connect with my PS5, mobile phones are so good now that I absolutely believe its the next big platform for AAA game development and distribution

Games like flintlock are the ones i like to get in the end of year sales for like 10 to 15 quid. Grows my pile of shame exponentially every year but it's nice to have a few decent 7/10 thing to just randomly get into when theres nothing major releasing to grab your attention

Would be really interesting to get your opinion on game developers creating less attractive women characters (new fable as just 1 example). In the new Star wars game, the real life woman that the main character is based on is gorgeous, but the game character doesn't look like her nor even "pretty". Why do you think the games companies are doing these things?

The 2k are likely the gamers who already invested in mobile gaming (have a controller for their device or thumb sleeves). It’s a new market basically for a few expensive devices. Fortnite ran on just about everything and on a high end device you were rewarded with high frames rates and graphics. I can see plenty opting to buy a PC rather than purchasing an Apple device for a starting price of $999 on the low end. 80% of those who downloaded I’m sure came from an iPhone 15 without a controller just to test, some use their console controller maybe but without a dedicated mobile solution that would also be just a 1 or 2 case use.

Nah, we have way too many "7/10's." Why would you want a game-Flintlock, for example-to be mid when it could be great. What we actually need are more _exceptional_ games

The thing is I feel like the majority of folks just don’t want to pay for a mobile game.

Android/ios gaming could be the perfect excuse to revisit and remaster old franchises but for some reason these companies insist on making bad ports of PS4 games...

They cultivated an environment on mobile where “services” are favored over products and ownership matters little. It’s no longer a place where quality games can thrive. Only money extraction schemes.

Watching stuff and playing games on mobile feels like being crammed into a small corner.

About the 7/10 type games, I understand what is meant by that, but for me those are or can still be really good games. - Some of them can also be straight-up solid with drawbacks while highly praised in some ways. - "Senua's Sacrifice" (the first Hellblade) is one of those. People act like it's this AAA-grade masterpiece made by a AA-studio, just because it's supposed to have the most amazing visuals and audio, as well as a deeply emotional story. While that's true to some extent, that was not my experience and it's flawed enough to get bumped "down" to a 7 in my view. - And that's the thing, I say "down", because that's high, it's 70% positive, not even 60, not even just 50% also known as "half". No, more than half of it is good, pretty much three quarters when generous, and that's just being realistic about it. - People would get offended/triggered by calling their favorite games a 7 out of 10, but some of my favorites would probably end up there. - Like right now I'm playing the crap out of 'RollerCoaster Tycoon' again, which holds up amazingly well. But it still has the same issues that I even saw back almost a quarter of a century ago and I don't think I could rate it higher than an 8, realistically, while the game is probably in my top 5 games. What I want is for people to ignore that stigma, indeed, and just play more of the 7 or even 6 or 5 out of 10 games. Sure, sometimes it can indicate serious issues, but sometimes it's also just a bunch of dunking on it for one reason or another while it might be a perfectly fine game to just play through for a while and then move on. Same for movies sometimes. - But yea, in our "bubble", we take stuff too seriously and really just follow the herd, mostly, as much as people want to pretend they're so privy to what's good or bad. - Gamer-culture, at least online and in all the medias, is a toxic culture, really. Real gamers just go play stuff.

I really like Flintlock, I just started it today! A pretty good game and it came out in the right time, because this is for me the only interesting game in July, and the next interesting games are only end of August (Outlaws and Black Myth). I love these semi-open world games, and I think they are much better than fully open world games. This is also the reason why I prefer FromSofts older titles over Elden Ring.

The worst thing holding mobile games back is the fact they're mobile games. The sheer amount of notifications, currencies and ads are bullshit

I think for games to success in mobile it needs simple control and can be played in short times. The examples is battle royale, fps, and moba game. Only 15-30 minutes per match. Control is easy, only movement, attack, and another 1 to 3 button for skills, switch weapon, etc. I play genshin. While its available on mobile, most people playing it on PC because it needs more complicated button input for characters rotation and has story that needs more time to finish. Its mobile game but not comfortable to play in mobile.

I think it’s because RE7 has been out for long enough , people who want to play it already have for as cheap or cheaper on big screen.. Mirage is more recent so numbers are probably still a little better but agree , not as high as I would expect

I was going to get assassins creed mirage on my Iphone, but it's only available on the most recent apple products. The iPhone 15 series. I'm on a 14 pro max and it's not even available. 14s aren't even that old.

Please talk about the state of VR. I just got a PSVR2 and people every say VR is dead. But I want (and for myself need) to disagree. What is your take?

I think a few reasons contribute to bad adoption of these big games on mobile/Apple ecosystem. 1) Horror games like RE aren’t probably as big of a draw as other more mainstream titles that appeal to a wider audience, 2) these games are older and so likely already owned by a lot of folks who probably don’t really want to buy them again. A third reason I think there’s low adoption is that the market for mobile games and console/PC games like these I think are different segments. Mobile games that focus on low attention span, quick and repeatable phone action are a very different audience than these. I think there are plenty of gamers with apple phones/tablets/macs, but they’re also like the same audience who probably already owns these games or has played them to begin with, so getting folks to rebuy them is a big ask. I think that’s why you have such a large margin of folks who would get the demo to test it, but don’t buy (i did that) because I just wanted to see how well it ran, even though I’d prefer to play on console. I also think that Mac has a long way to go before there’s a big user base looking to buy their games PRIMARILY for the apple ecosystem before another option. I have all the mac products including an M3 Max laptop that can run them, but I also have a PS5 and Steam Deck and can’t help but wonder where the incentive is to buy it there instead of another platform. Streaming (albeit not great) is a different situation if I can stream games to any device off a single subscription, since I’m not having to buy multiple copies.

It’s understandable. People want to play triple A games on big screens because they love the detail and high quality graphics. Why would you want to play a game like RDR2 on a tiny screen?

I think GTA V on mobile would print money. I think we’re thinking too hard on putting these massive, grandiose games on mobile. Mobile games are designed to be picked up and put down within like 5-10 minutes. Don’t put a game on mobile if it has cinematics that are that long. You want fast fun

Xbox Gamepass cloud streaming on phones turned out much better than I thought it would be.

I would purchase these games for my iOS devices if the performance was on point. I have an iPhone 15 Pro and iPad M4, but there are frame pacing issues that I can’t tolerate when playing.

For some reason I only like turn based games on my phone. I wouldn't like a full on action game or shooter or something. I nevee expected the full games on iOS to do well honestly

Agree the AA game, the ps2 platformer AA game are all in short supply. Indie devs of Kena Bridge of Shadows and devs of Flintlock, have it right, if a new IP make a shorter, cheaper game (proof of concept). polish the combat. It it's profitable (proof of market demand), make another more complete game at a higher price.

It’s like Apple is gonna have to give us more than 128GB default if they want games on mobile. I think it hurts that so few devices support it right now. I think Apple will have to eat profit on it for 5-10 years before it has a chance to be profitable and have lots of games.
