Disability is a taboo - We all live with the fear of disability and its impacts on a normal living. Yet, most disable people did not choose to be disabled. That obviously doesn’t take their right to live, learn and lead a respectable life away from them. The dignity of existence is their right too. One can learn a lot from disability…ummm…nope let’s call it ‘THIS ABILITY’, because in the absence of a single spoken word, a lot can happen over a coffee.
Madhumita is a mentor and peer teacher in the special school unit of IICP as well as in some of the mainstream schools of Kolkata. She works with innovative and creative approaches to education and communication through Augmentative & Alternative communication and Assistive Technology, with children having cerebral palsy and speech impairments receive to support them through their transition and adulthood.
She piloted IICP’s project, the (GupShup) software to be used by students with complex communication needs in inclusive classrooms of mainstream schools. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx
